Opinion: How should we spell the name?

My husband and I are team green! We have settled on both a boy name and a girl name, but we need help deciding on a spelling for the girl name. We have fallen in love with the name pronounced eyes-lee, but can't agree on a spelling. We want it to be feminine, but readable. With a name like Kirsten, I have struggled with people calling me the wrong name my entire life and we want to minimize that for our child. Middle name would be Rosemond, after my great-grandmother. Which spelling do you think would be best?

Re: Opinion: How should we spell the name?

  • Aisley reminds me of a grocery store aisle, and would risk being pronounced "eye-lee", without the s.

Eisley is my second choice spelling. I prefer how it looks over Isley. However, it is less phonetic. Sticking to phonetic can help others spell it later - accurately!

Eisele is the most likely to encounter problems. It is delightfully reminiscent of Gisele. But just like that name, the spelling suggests pronouncing it "eye-zell" or even "eye-seh-lee", because of the misleading "e" before the "l".

    Did you rule out Islee?

  • Aisley might also be pronounced to rhyme with Paisley.
  • Yes, the Paisley rhyme is the reason I posted this actually. We like the look of Aisley for the femininity, but I agree that they will call her ayes-lee. We ruled out Islee because it looks too masculine to us.
  • Think it's clearly what the easiest pronunciation would be! aisley when I first read it I said a long A and Isley I said IZley. Eisley is hard to mess up and said exactly how you wanted!

I'd pronounce all of these completely differently if you hadn't directed the readers on the correct pronunciation. I'd second what pp said in that Eisley was the one I properly read without needing a prompt.
  • If you're trying to avoid mispronunciations for your daughter, this name will be tough. It's a beautiful name, and I think you should go with it, but also know that each of the spellings looks like it'll be mispronounced by plenty of people throughout her life. I like the look of Aisley more than the others, but I agree with PP that it looks like Paisley.

  • I think Eisley looks nice written and would be easy enough to pronounce, but you still my find yourself correcting pronunciation. That shouldn't deter you from choosing the name, just be aware of that.

  • Thank you all so much. We have a clear winner.
  • I'm a Kirsten too! My entire life I've been called Kristen or Cursten so I feel you pain!
I voted for the second spelling. I think there will always be someone who will pronounce that name incorrectly because it's unusual, but I think it's a great name!
  • My cousins have an Isley and several times she has though about legally changing it to Eisley because They dislike how people pronounce Isley.
  • My cousins spelled it with the "A," but it was a very confusing name at first!
  • I like the e spellings, but not sure just by looking at it how it should be pronounced. Looks cute!
