2nd Trimester

Appetite!?

Since ive been pregnant i feel like i have no appetite. Before i could eat 2 plates of dinner now i eat about half of one. I get super hungry and feel like im going to starve but once i start eating i quickly get full i didnt see this as a problem but i have one of those know it all sister in laws that likes to tell me everything about my pregnancy isnt normal. Is anyone else not wanting to stuff their face all day?

Re: Appetite!?

  • I'm 21 weeks and I feel like my appetite has been the same probably less than before I got pregnant. I know they say that in the second trimester it should increase but I'm still waiting for that lol

  • I am the same! Im starved and then I cant eat a lot before feeling full. Then, an hour later I am hungry again. It must be normal...

i don't either. I JUST started to get hungry about two weeks ago (at 12 weeks) but today, my maternity sickness came back with a vengeance. (It seems foolish to refer to something i tend to get all day long as "morning sickness")

Not only sick but just DISINTERESTED in food and completely unable to stand the smell of any cooking food.

And btw, when your organs start to shift your tummy gets squeezed, changing its capacity and giving you the effect of a gastric bypass.
  • I felt like I had no appetite either in the beginning but now at 23 weeks, I could eat all day.  I'd rather eat small meals throughout the day instead of big plates of food though.

  • I feel the exact same way. I told my doctor about it and he said its normal as long as I do eat something throughout the day. And friends/coworkers told me they were the same way. I'm not worried but I do pack a lot of snacks in case I need something.
  • I cannot relate.

  • Also, progesterone slows down your digestion significantly. So whatever you eat is going to take longer to digest. Digestion starts in the mouth with digestive enzymes and ends when you take a bowel movement. With everything moving through your system so much slower, it's common to have a "full" sensation even after a small meal. This might be why your appetite seems to have lessened. Other contributing factors include food aversions (even if you don't outright recognize them) and of course the limited space your stomach is allowed to occupy when your baby's living quarters dominate the space in your abdominal cavity.
What has helped me is literally having a small snack every hour and a half. Sometimes I'll even wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and have an apple just to get something in my stomach and keep the nutrients flowing. I have HG--which has lessened recently as I am a little over 16w--but it taught me to eat something healthy even if I wasn't necessarily hungry just to ward off the N/V. Since being pregnant my eating has shifted from small meals and a few snacks a day to all small snacks a day that equal enough calories to maintain a healthy pregnant diet.
Fruit is my main go-to, and my other staples usually include low-fat cottage cheese, nuts, an occasional small salad, Greek yogurt, carrots and hummus, and various quinoa and vegetable based sides. I'm a vegetarian and try to keep get one of these snacks/small "meals" into me at least 7-8 times a day.
  • I'm the same way! I get very hungry and then once I begin to eat my meal, I get full fast and lose my appetite. It is so frustrating and I wish I could just feel better and eat. I am 12 weeks today and still have lots of nausea. I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel to gain an appetite and feel better. Good luck!
  • Last night we went out for our anniversary and I couldn't eat because eating turned me off. I just told my husband that when we go out, he should order whatever he wants and I'll just pick from his plate. There's no point in wasting the money.
  • Thanks ladys. I try telling my husbands family these things but they all disagree saying babies too small to make less room in there (i think 5inches is a significant size to be inside of you) wish you could just tell in laws to shut up and mind their own business haha at lease i can tell them others are the same way now
  • I had no appetite the first trimester, but now I want to eat everything but can only eat small portions. Exercise helps with maintaining an appetite it seems.
