Baby clothing in hospital

I am aware this has been discussed before but I cannot find the thread! What did you STM's+ pack/dress your baby in during the hospital stay? I'm pretty sure my SIL didn't pack much of anything and just swaddled baby but I cannot remember! I just would like to have a good basis of what to bring my little one!

Re: Baby clothing in hospital

  • While we were in the hospital they provided a little white cotton onesie-type outfit, hats, diapers, and blankets.  So all I brought with me was something simple to bring her home in.

  • All I brought was the going home outfit. My hospital advises to just use the stuff they provide while in hospital because you might end up losing your stuff in their laundry.

All my hospital provided for DS was a onsie long sleeve shirt that only went half way down his ribs. We dressed him in onsies and baby gowns we brought. Hospital also provided hats but his head was so big they didn't fit :-P
Edited to add: DS was a Nov baby and we were in the hospital for 3-4 days because I had a c-section. It was freak in cold in there so I am clad we had extra clothes for him.

After her first bath we put her into PJ's...since we were only there for 24 hours, we had two outfits...PJs and her going home outfit.
I am having a c-section this time, so will be in the hospital for atleast 3 days, so we are bringing a few more onesies and PJS

  • I figured there was no point in dressing my babies just to have a dr or medical student or nurse etc undress them every 30 min. Both times the nurses kept trying to dress them like they felt sorry for them. I am bringing more than a going home outfit this time.

  • We just used the hospital supplied little shirts. Only thing we packed was going home outfits.
  • Just going home outfit here :)
  • What everyone else said, don't bother with clothes for the hospital. The only reason I can see that you may want to bring an outfit is if your hospital offers in-room photography. Even when we did the pics, we only had her in a diaper, headband and homemade blanket. But if you'd want to dress baby in a special outfit for that, then I'd say bring it.

Our hospital puts the babies in nice fleece Halo sleep sacks, so no hats/socks/mittens were necessary. The thin white cotton top and bottom they put them in under that was plenty warm. Especially for summer babies.

  • Going home outfit. Possibly a hat/headband. The white shirts were fine for the hospital.

  • My DS was just swaddled, he had a onesie to go home in (should have brought pants too!) DD did wear a pair of jammies in the hospital because I felt it was a little chilly.
  • Both babes wore what the hospital provided. All I packed was a coming home outfit.

  • Check with the hospital, many offer free maternity ward tours. I highly recommend going so you can scope out the place and find out exactly what is provided for both you and baby.

Ours provided t-shirts, hats, socks, swaddles, diapers all the basics. You only needed a take home outfit. DD also landed in the NICU where people kindly donate clothes. She was much too small for the newborn outfit we brought and the nurses let us take her home in a donated preemie sleeper type outfit and a halo sleep sack. The nurses dressed her up in quite a few different sleepers during her short stay.

Ours provided a side snap long sleeve shirt and then she stayed swaddled. I plan on bringing her going home outfit (which is just a pair of jammies that say little sister) and then maybe an extra onsite or two. Nothing crazy. I brought wayyyy to much stuff last time.
  • I put my son in clothes we brought the second day. He was so little the stuff they provided was too big. I loved having him in clothes that we picked out. Nothing was lost.

  • I will likely bring some snap up sleepers and a halo sleep sack with the swaddle arms. I have to have a c-section, so we will be there at least 2 nights (was 3 with my daughter), and I know with her we wanted her in something besides the plain white t-shirts, loose knit hat that wouldn't stay on, and not that great swaddle blankets they provided - they were too small to get a good swaddle and a little scratchy. It was too chilly in there for just the provided t-shirt and hat if I remember right, and I'm assuming the AC is going to be cranked up in August.

I brought the baby gowns.. They were easy for me to have him in. I also bought a zippered newborn sleeper. It was cold always. I then brought the going home outfit.
