Failed the 1 hr glucose test yesterday

got a 152 out of 140 :( gonna have to do the 3 hr on Monday. My ob told me she wants me to load up on carbs for the 3 days before the test. Is this the norm? She said to eat all the bread pasta and donuts that I can. I don't really want to though. I hope I pass the 3 hour test :/ I passed the one hour the first time at 9 weeks and was hoping I'd pass it again. Blahh

Re: Failed the 1 hr glucose test yesterday

  • My dr gave me a "diet" to follow for 3 days prior to my 3 hr. I had to eat my normal meals plus 4 items from the list each day. It was ridiculous! I passed my 3 hr!
  • Loading the player...
  • @blondehairblueeyedital that list is insane! hahaha. I love sweets and I hope I don't have to eat four of those a day.
  • @blondehairblueeyeditalianbaby good grief that's a hell of a list! I could do it but I really don't want to lol I'm already prediabetic. Why would I want to load up on carbs and sugar and increase the chance of failing?!

Wow! Mine just wanted me to get in right away and take the test after fasting for over 8 hours. Mind you, I was 134 with a cut off of 130. I'd be pretty...upset if they suggested that diet to me since I'm borderline glucose intolerant and manage it with exercise and a balanced diet.

  • The whole carb loading before doing the test baffles me. How would that benefit anyone? My doctor didn't give me any directions. I ate a banana before one test and a bowl of frosted flakes before the other and I did not alter my diet in the days leading up to the test and I passed both 1 hours.
  • I don't have any insight to the pre-diet but getting the go-ahead for that diet would be my dream ;-)
  • I love sweets but that diet was something else. I didn't follow it 100% but I did the best I could. I am just happy I passed the 3 hr after all of that.
  • My one hour glucose test is on Wednesday and I am really nervous about. It doesn't run in my family and my mom never had it with any of her kids, but you never know with GD. Hoping my efforts in eating as well as I can and staying active works in my favor next week!
  • I failed my 1-hour and the doctor didn't say anything about a diet before the 3 hour except that I had to fast for it. And I failed the 3-hour now off to a specialist to get further instructions.
  • I just took the 1 hour today and I hated it.  I immediately got a headache and felt horrible, then wanted to nap.  I hope I don't fail because the 3 hour will be absolute torture!
  • How did yall do with driving after your test? Mine is tomorrow just curious if i need someone to go with me!
  • I took my one hour today, I felt nauseous and dizzy, I was told if I felt this way while waiting prior to the blood work to let them know. I did, they had me lay down for the remaining 45 minutes. I ended up napping during that time. They took my blood and I left the lab. Once in my car I had some water that I brought with me. I waited 5 minutes and then drove home. I was OK to drive but ended up calling into work to take the day of. It's been 7 hours now of water flushing and I'm starting to feel normal again. This is just me, you might experience the test differently. I hope I pass, not sure I could do that again.
  • I failed my 1 hour Wednesday with a cut off of 130 I got a 168. I don't understand because I eat healthy and exercise. Oh well....I went in for the 3 hour today. Not going to lie it was slightly miserable but I brought a book so I made it through. I'm hoping to get my results tomorrow. As far as driving it was no problem. I did bring a couple snacks in my purse for after though. However, if you have someone go with you to keep you company that might be really nice :)
  • Surprised that some of you haven't found out your results yet. I found out within 5 minutes of the lab tech drawing my blood. I passed by only one point with a cut off of 135. Talk about cutting it close! I didn't eat before my appointment although I wasn't required to fast. I'm glad I didn't eat because I don't think I would have squeaked by. I hope you ladies pass, good luck to you all!
  • My sister failed three different tests. However in the end she didn't have gestational diabetes! I thought that was pretty crazy. Good luck to you!
  • @sidskinner I was fine to drive after my test. It was such a relief to being stuck there feeling crappy for an hour. My husband said I should have waited in my car, and Si think that would gave made it better because I could have passed out or at least been in my own space.
  • @smiversen how did she fail 3 different tests and end up not having GD?
  • Taking my 3 hour test tomorrow! Was told not to eat anything after midnight!

  • @sidskinner I was fine to drive. I actually drank the stuff then left to pick up my son during the hour wait.
  • I passed my 3 failed my one hour. Just glad to not have to be worried about another thing! GL to you ladies who still have to wait for the 3 hr

I'm not a doctor, but from what I understand, the body will have more trouble processing sugar if it's not used to a big sugar rush. So, if you weren't eating bursts of sugar for your entire pregnancy, then fast, then do the 1 hour, of course your body is going to have more trouble processing it and then you fail the test. So, the "diet" is to get your body used to bursts of sugar so it's not "surprised" by the sugar in the glucose test.

My midwife, my Bradley class instructor, and a lot of pregnant women I know (and now I!) don't like the 1 hour test. So many people fail and then pass the 3 hour. They need to work on a more effective screener.
  • I just had my 1 hour test today. I was super nervous just because of things I've read on here. I had no problem drinking it and felt fine after. I just got a call from my doctors office though saying it was slightly elevated. Cut off is 135 and mine was 148. I have to go back Friday for the 3 hour test..just my luck :((
  • Going back on Thursday for the three hour test. I feel bad for anyone who has to deal with me after fasting for 8 hours! Uhg! Talk about hangry!!!

This makes a lot of sense to me based on my 1 hour test. I definitely felt effects from the drink (nauseous, cold sweats, dizzy) about 30 min after drinking it and then I was completely wiped the rest of the day. I eat pretty healthy, exercise regularly, and don't consume a lot of sugar, and I felt like my body was shocked by the test. I failed it, which didn't surprise me much based on how I felt after, go in for my 3 hour tomorrow. Anyway, thanks for posting this bc it makes me feel better about my experience so far!
  • I took my 1 hour yesterday, got a voicemail saying my sugar was slightly high. They didn't tell me my exact numbers but my office is mailing me out some paperwork and I have to go back for the 3 hour soon. I'm incredibly nervous, and had a pretty miserable time at the 1 hour, although the drink wasn't awful tasting. I'm just really dreading going back. :(
  • I take mine tomorrow and just pray I pass. To those that have to take the 3 hrs test best of luck, I hope you all pass.
  • My Dr said to eat breakfast for the 1 hour test. We're you ladies told to fast?
  • My 3 hour is tomorrow morning. I heard lots of people fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 I hope I'm one of them!
  • Mine for the 1 hour said eat a well-balanced breakfast. Do not fast, but also do not eat overly sugary things like donuts or pancakes. It's so inconsistent from office to office, which is annoying. My lab also said that no news is good news and I haven't heard anything yet (from 9 this morning...). I did get lab results a couple hours ago for my thyroid blood work that was good though from my primary care... which was good news, so whatever.
