Toddler beds

hi ladies! I was looking for some thoughts and opinions on when to transition LO to a toddler bed. She has never liked her crib and she also has some sleep issues. Mainly, she stands up while sleeping and just lets herself fall over. The pediatrician said its a form of sleepwalking and it may be better to put her in a toddler bed. I worry that she will hurt herself since she can walk now. Also, baby #2 will be here in October, and we obviously don't want to buy another crib if we don't need to.

When are you planning to transition your LO to a toddler bed? Or for STM, when did you feel your LO was ready? Thanks in advance!

Re: Toddler beds

  • We are a similar situation with baby #2 arriving in January. I was honestly thinking of going right to a twin bed (because it will last longer) and installing some gaurd rails on both sides. Thoughts STM????

We plan to do the transition during Christmas break when we are home and not working. That's as far as I have gotten to thinking about all this! Sorry I'm no help!

  • @sherks11 I honestly thought the same thing, to try a twin bed! I'm just scared that if she did stand up it is a very high fall to the ground. We are hoping to transition her around end of summer. I hope that gives us enough time!
  • Instead of setting up te twin bed frame you could always do a twin mattress on the ground.
I didn't translation my son till almost 2 1/2 so no tips on doing it younger.

  • We transitioned DD1 at 22mos because she was climbing out and hurting herself. We transitioned DS when he was just over 2 yrs. He's a wild sleeper and would have been falling out a lot if we did it earlier. He was climbing out at 15/16mos, but not every time we put him down (at least, up until the end) and he never got hurt. My philosophy on toddler beds is not to switch them until they're climbing out. When they're older, they understand better about staying in bed. We have convertible crib-toddler beds, but if you don't, I would just put a twin mattress on the floor, like pp suggested. DD1 has the box spring and mattress on the floor still. We wanted it high enough for our babies not to climb on, but low enough so that falling out wouldn't be too bad. She's never fallen out of bed, but DS has several times since this past winter.

  • We barely transitioned to the crib. Lol. But yes, same here... Baby #2 arriving early January. Hadn't even thought that far ahead.

LO1 transitioned at 2y3m-ish. We just moved her to a full bed (mattress & box spring w/out a frame) and she did great. Loved it from the get go. We had let her play on it and pretended to tuck her in a few times, more because she initiated than us.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! We mostly bed share with her now but she still doesn't understand the concept of not going over the edge of the bed. Hopefully we will figure out a solution soon.
  • @OliveOyl2014 - if I'm understanding what your LO is doing, it seems to me that a crib might actually be safer if she is standing up? I would worry about her falling out of a toddler bed and definitely a regular bed. If she's actually climbing out, then that's different of course.

We ended up with two cribs in our house and it worked for us. We went cheaper on the second crib. We kept DD in her crib until about 2.5. She never tried to climb out though. The reason we changed was because it was interfering with potty training. I am of the school of keeping them in the crib until it isn't working for you - for whatever reason that might be. And we transitioned DD's crib to a toddler bed, so I don't feel like we wasted money. She still falls out of bed at almost 3.5, so I'm glad she's not in a regular bed.
