Natural Birth

Rise in Induction

I am being induced tomorrow and soooooo not happy about it. Is it just me or does it seem like there are TONS of inductions going on? It seems like they are inducing for every stupid thing and most of the women just blindly agree or even welcome it! Since when did babies forget how to come out on their own! Is it an insurance thing where they don't even want women to go into labor naturally? I just keep reading about all these inductions and it is so frustrating! Why is no one noticing this!? Sorry i just needed to get this off my chest. Im so upset that I being forced into an induction (they told me if I didn't go when they said to on Sunday night then they would only be willing to do a c section if I showed up later in the week already in labor. Yes, they really f'ing said that!) Are most women being backed into a corner like me or are they just bobbleheads agreeing with whatever some yahoo in a lab coat says!??!!!!

Re: Rise in Induction

  • I don't know the reasons you doctors said that to you, but I'm assuming they have a reason. I wouldn't agree to with either off those options unless there was a valid medical reason.

  • Do you have the ability to go to a different practice/hospital? How far along are you right now? It's really wrong that they're threatening you if you're balking at an induction. What reasons are they giving you for inducing?

Inductions are high in the US. I had my first seven years ago, and lots of women were being induced then. Not much has changed, unfortunately.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Ask them to give you a medical reason why they are inducing. How far along are you?

What a crappy situation. I truly hope they end up being more flexible. Keep us updated!
  • I'm supposed to be 40 weeks tomorrow based on the first ultrasound done at 12 weeks although I know thats 5 days early (short of the immaculate conception). They did an ultrasound 3 weeks ago and said baby was getting too big so they had me go for additional GD screening (my 26 week was fine) and said I now have GD, although it isn't that high. They put me on a once a day med and gave me a diet to follow and my sugar has been testing perfect 4 times a day now.
They did another ultrasound this past Thurs and said baby is at 4204 grams and that the cutoff for them being willing to do a vaginal delivery is 4200 grams so I am right at their borderline. This was already at 4 in the afternoon and they gave me 2 choices. Either I have them induce on Sunday night or they would start calling around the hospital OBs to see which OB would meet me on Friday to schedule a c section for Monday. The midwife said the problem was that once the hospital OBs saw that I was at 4200 grams (about 9 lbs 4 oz) that they would even give me the choice to induce and would insist on a c section. Basically if I even met with them they would take the choice away from me altogether.
There is only one hospital around and all the area doctors are only affiliated with that hospital. I'm also afraid if I miss her scheduled induction tonight and then try to wait til I go into labor naturally to go to the hospital they will automatically insist on a c section.
Ive accepted my fate. Not happy but accepted. To me it was like choosing between having my toenails or my fingernails ripped out with plyers. Big choice. Anyway, I guess now that I need to induce it guess I keep seeing all the induction stories and I can't believe that many women need to be induced. I can't believe that many are stuck in the same boat as me. I did a little research and the induction rate has risen so much. It begs to question why. I think mine is a hospital liability thing. Why else would they have such a specific cutoff of 4200 grams? Why not base it on the individual patient? Again I know this is all a moot point for me. I was just wondering why so many women seem ok with it.

If it is a valid medical reason that they are doing an ibduction, then I side with the doctors. If there is not, then you. BUT you are not telling us why they want you to be induced. So right now I stand neutral ground.

Because they say the baby is at 4200 grams and I have GD even though its being controlled. That is the only reason they gave me. The potential size is why they insist on inducing or doing a c section.

This seems very weird to me. Ultasounds are notoriously inaccurate for judging how much a baby weighs. It seems odd to me that they'd be this inflexible based only on an ultrasound. Keep in mind, they can't force you into a c-section. You have the right to refuse any medical treatment. The doctors are in charge of presenting what they believe to be the best (or sometimes most convenient) options. You are in charge of making the actual medical decisions for you and your baby.

The bolded is something that is supremely annoying. Babies don't know when to come; ask the women who have dealt with pre-term labor or gone post dates and the complications that go hand-in-hand with those conditions.

You have gestational diabetes and a baby that is suspected to weigh more than 4,000 grams. You have medical indications for an induction. Your risk for a C-section and other complications is increasing the longer you remain pregnant. It's true that no doctor can force you to have a C-section, but please know there is an increasing body of researching that a term induction at 40w has a lower rate of C-section than expectant management - and that's before factoring in the complication of GD and macrosomia.
  • What was your "failing" OGTT result?

In an ideal situation, *I* absolutely would not induce for a suspected 9 lb baby or mild-moderate case of impaired glucose tolerance unless I had a great Bishop's score. That's the main "risk" of IGT, but mostly in those with uneven or uncontrolled elevated glucose levels. Some, many, babies are just genetically bigger than average.

  • I don't think that GD is automatically a reason for induction. I had it and managed it well like OP is doing. I went into labor at 40+3 but fought it before then. If the numbers are fine, then why push it? If I would have an an NST, which I was supposed to get the morning I had DS, and that came back less than favorable, then yes, I would have agreed. GD is only an issue if not monitored well. And of course the sizing ultrasounds can be off. OP, I think you are stuck probably at this point, but just offering you my support, since you have accepted the induction, I hope it goes well. I've read lots of great birth stories with induction. Keep us posted and good luck!

  • I've heard that with GD they typically don't like you to go past 40w. And it sounds like there is a medical reason behind their suggestion, that it isn't because the doctor has a tee-time they don't want to miss or something.

That said, I'm surprised they haven't offered other things before scheduling an induction. Did they suggest inserting one of those bulbs, or doing a membrane sweep, or cervidil or anything less intense than straight up pitocin? That would seem like the logical first step to me.

Well, Grace Rosina was born on Tuesday morning at 9:40 am via c section weighing in at 8 lbs.8oz. and 20 inches long.  They started the induction on Sunday night with Cervidil that only got me to 2cm.  Monday morning they inserted a Foley Bulb and gave me Cyotec, which got me to 4 cm.  Monday afternoon they started Pitocin that got me to 7cm and put me in agony but wouldn't progress past 7-8cm.  They gave me an epidural at my request at that point but then Grace's HR started to have decelerations throughout the night.  They stopped the Pit and and Epi in hopes of stopping the decels but then my labor stopped altogether.  By Tuesday morning they realized there was no way to safely keep me on the Pit and no way to get labor to progress without out.  A c section was the last option.  While I am by no means happy with the way this all transpired I am in awe of the end result.

I'm sorry things didn't turn out the way you had hoped.  Allow yourself time to grieve that loss if you need to.

Congratulations on your little love!  She is absolutely beautiful!  I love her name too, what an angel.  Enjoy your little bundle of joy!
  • Sorry to hear about how everything ended up but the results are amazing! Congrats on your little girl!
  • Congrats!! Remember you had the right birth for you in that moment and that's an amazing beautiful thing.
  • Congrats on your baby girl and I am sorry that your experience was not what you wanted, I totally agree with your frustrations and feel that hospitals a lot of the time will recommend inductions and c sections simply because they are better for the hospital and not the mother, women are made to birth their babies and their bodies create babies that are meant to be birthed by them. The fact that women are told their babies are too big for them to do on their own or that they are over 40 weeks and have to be induced or have c sections is just a ploy to better the business (the hospital). I am all for natural birth and believe in the process, due dates are estimations not exact just as growth scans are not exact and most of the time off by a pound or so.

I fully believe to have a good birthing experience you have to feel confident and that you have made your own decisions and believe in those decisions and you can then accept and be ok with the outcome, obviously there are complications and our bodies don't always do what we want and we have to prepare for alternative routes and the what ifs but if you are properly informed and given all the options and information then you can make a sound decision and feel confident that you are in control rather than a doctor telling you what you can and cant do.

I know that was a bit of a rant but I think too many women are just giving in and under the impression that inductions and c sections and all these medical interventions are normal and are just the way to give birth when really they aren't, they are supposed to be for the critical situations and for the few women that have complications.

  • Congrats on the birth of your DD!!!!

For the record, my babies are larger than measured (by u/s and my stomach). So DD came at 37w2d - 8 lbs. DS was measured 7 lbs but based on past experience my m/w wanted to talk induction - when I arrived at the appt I was in active labor (unbeknownst to me) and DS was born 4 hrs later 38w2d - 8 lbs 8 oz. My pelvic floor (and age) is not happy about that large babies. I hope you fared better. But I am very happy about the babies!!! As I can tell you are too! :)

    Congrats again!
