Baby Monitor Recommendations

Anyone have recommendations on which baby monitors are best and why?

Re: Baby Monitor Recommendations

  • I have the Motorola video monitor with two cameras. The monitor shows everything, temperature of the room, zooms, and moves back and forth. I like having a second because when we travel I pack that one and it's already synced to the monitor. The battery life is pretty good too.

Just don't get the babies r us one!! I hated it so much. It was $125 and did basically nothing but show a picture. No zoom, no panning, no battery so it had to be charging all the time (but you could pay $50 for the battery, what a deal! *sarcasm*). Thankfully that one broke and I bought the Summer Infant one that was about $200 and does everything. I used a 20% off coupon from Buy Buy Baby. I can buy a second camera for it if I want to, and I can hook it up to my iPhone so I can peek in if I leave her with someone. I like it a lot.

    Edited for spelling
  • We've had a summers infant one that's held out for 3 years. They're decently priced and have lasting power so we're happy. There are more expensive brands that do more, but these were the best option for our budget. We'll be getting another one for baby girl so we can have two cameras (they don't make extra cameras for the monitor we have anymore)

  • I was thinking of the angel care one since a movement monitor is included, but from the negative reviews I read, people were complaining about the camera. I still haven't completely made up my mind :(
  • We have Summer Infant video monitor for DD, I love it!
  • We have the Motorola with two cameras and have had no issues with it.

  • We also have Summer video monitors. We have two cameras, one in each kid's room and you can sync them so it will show one room for 8 seconds, then switch on its own and show the other room for 8 seconds. I leave it on sync all night so I never have to worry if I'll hear them when we're sleeping.
  • I have the basic AngelCare monitor - sound/movement/temperature sensors only. It is great! Video isn't necessary for babies.

Now that my daughter is almost two I am looking for a video monitor for her big girl room and I will use the AngelCare monitor for the new baby.
  • Angel care, no video. I never figured out why people want to stare at their infant from another room.

  • @WSatisfiedP I have 2 toddlers in cribs next to each other that I need to see are not messing with each other, have limbs through bars, or attempting to climb out of the crib.

jesselayne8  - I believe the one we have is this:

I think this particular model only works with 2 cameras. We plan on taking the camera out of the 4 years olds room and putting it in the babies room.

I wanted to add that we did not have a video monitor until we moved into a bigger house two years ago. So while both boys were babies we only had an audio one, which worked perfectly fine for us. Once we made the switch we were like, "this is awesome! I wish we would have switched sooner!" DS#2 was always a light sleeper and has terrible night terrors. The video monitor helps us to decipher the difference between a real waking, a night terror or a sleepy cry.

  • Angel care, no video. I never figured out why people want to stare at their infant from another room.

It isn't necessary when they're small, but when they can stand and pull up its nice to know if they're awake you can watch them to make sure they aren't crawling out as this can be dangerous. So rather than spend money on two different monitors some of us like to just start with the video monitor in the first place.
  • My thoughts on cameras, If you can setup the cameras on a secure network, I see no reason not to have cameras. You may not need to use it every day, but that one day or night when an incident occurs, you will be glad it was there.
  • We have the Summer Infant video monitor and love it - it also has a feature that allows you to talk to your child in their room as they get older ("Get back in bed!"). It pans, zooms, etc. I know parents got by for years without video, but for me, with it being available, as long as you get one that is secure so you don't have your neighbors picking up your kid's video feed, etc., then why wouldn't you? I like being able to look when they cry to see that they are safe - nothing is stuck, their face isn't smushed into something. I like to be able to see if they are sitting, standing, or laying down as they get older. If I hear a noise in their room I like to be able to pan the camera to see what caused it. To me, it is SO much nicer to be able to get a sense for what is going on without having to physically walk into a room and risk waking the baby up.
  • I have a motorola one with 2 cameras that we bought in January to replace our Graco one we used with my daughter in anticipation of needing 2. The Graco one kinda sucked. It lost signal completely once MOTN and the beeping wasn't enough to wake me up, so my daughter got to CIO at around 7 months :/ I felt pretty horrible.

The motorala one worked great till about a month ago, and then it all of a sudden started having lost signal issues. I actually just called motorola on it this morning cause it woke me up two or three times last night with lost signal issues that I had to fix. The lady I talked to was really nice, and they are sending us out a replacement which is actually the upgraded version of it cause it is under warranty still. I just have to mail them back the other one when it gets here with a provided shipping label. Hopefully the next one doesn't have signal issues after 4 months! Other than that though I've been really happy with it. It is a lot nicer than the Graco one we had.

WSatisfiedP As for why someone would want a video monitor, my daughter is a very active sleeper, and always has been. There are often a lot of crazy thumps and noises that come from her room while she is sleeping and its been like that since she started sleeping in her crib at around 6 months old. Its hard to differentiate sometimes whether a loud thump is a problem or not. Its nice to be able to check on her and make sure she is okay rather than have to try and sneak in there (she wakes up as soon as the door cracks open). She also used to wake up quiet and just wait for me to come and get her sometimes. Without the video monitor, I wouldn't have known if she was awake or sleeping without opening the door again. Even at 2 years old there has been more than one occasion that I have looked at the monitor and she is hanging backwards out of bed (still asleep) or on the floor. We have brown recluse spiders here, so I don't like her sleeping on the floor. I can go in then and get her back into bed.

There was also one occasion early this spring that she was on oral steroids for really bad croup. I heard her MOTN make a couple of strange noises, but not enough that would normally make me think anything major was up. I turned on the monitor just to check on her real quick and there she was perched on top of her nightstand still sound asleep. Apparently my daughter suffers from steroid-induced night-climbing! Yea... her pedi confirmed this can apparently happen in toddlers... good to know... Without the video monitor to check her real quick I probably wouldn't have done anything, and she could have fallen off while still asleep and hurt herself.
  • @KMBC2552 my 3.5yr old probably doesn't need a video monitor but she calls for me so softly at first before getting hysterical. I often don't hear her especially if I have my fan on.
