Grunting baby

So my LO is a month old and he is constantly grunting. I've read so many mixed articles about reflux and soothing techniques. My doctor seems to be fine with the grunting, but it bothers me. He usually grunts most of the night and sounds congested. Any other moms dealing with this?

Re: Grunting baby

  • Mine grunts at night but isn't congested. We think he's just finding his voice or is uncomfortable or dreaming. Our doctor wasn't concerned but it's kind of annoying to sleep with lol! Last night I just put in his pacifier and my hand on his chest and gently shook him and said shhhh I'm here and he was quiet and fell asleep. My nurse said maybe he wants to be reassured we are still there. It worked for us at least. Good luck!

Yes my 4 week old is doing the same thing. I've chalked it up to gas. She was grunting a ton and very squirmy. I thought it could be a dairy allergy but after cutting that out for a week I realized the grunting and squirming is still there! I've been trying to burp her more often but she is so difficult to get a burp out of...
  • My 4 week old does the same thing. Constant grunting after she eats and it's near impossible to get a burp out of! It's so hard to sleep with! I dont know what to do
  • My almost 7 week old does the same thing around the same time every morning. I usually pick him up and rock him then put him back down.
  • I was going to post this very question. My 3 week old grunts at night. I was reading online last night and am trying to burp her more but it's difficult for her. I also tried swaddling her hoping for a longer sleep stretch at night.

  • I'm up pumping now because my 4 week old woke me up with his grunting. I put in his pacifier, shushed him and now he's asleep. I posted earlier about calming a fussy baby with the 5 S's so I'm employing that technique. Usually before when he was grunting I would have pulled him out to feed or change him. Hallelujah he's asleep!

I read your post earlier about the 5 S's and we tried it tonight- my 3 week old slept for 4.5 hrs straight for the 1st time. Hoping we have something good going on!
  • Swaddle shhh side suck sway(or gently shake/jiggle) you keep layering until LO relaxes. Also I have found my LO is less grunty and gassy if I hold him upright for awhile after he eats. It lets gravity help with the bubbles
  • I just read that it's completely normal for babies to grunt and make tons of noise. My first two did though this one is fairly quiet.

Nothing to really read into unless baby seems distressed or upset.

  • My 3 week old does the same thing! Its mostly after she eats but i hope its normal
  • Mine does this too from about 6-8 every morning!! It's very loud and hard to sleep through, but she's not awake and doesn't look that uncomfortable, so I tried to just let her work it out.

My baby was a noisy sleeper, but only at night and only in the bassinet. She was well fed, dry and swaddled each night. We tried gripe water because it's natural but didn't see an effect. We tried little remedies gas drops and almost instantly she was asleep and quiet. I wish I would have tried the drops sooner!!

My LO grunts too. She seems like she's straining though and her face will turn really red. She is in a constant state of grunting haha. She still poops though is the thing. It just seems like she's uncomfortable so I feel bad for her. She will wake herself up from grunting too.
