Work vent...advice?

Hello mamas, I work as an interior designer. My boss wants me to do a walk through with a new drapery company soon, it's at least a 3 hour walk through to let him know where we want draperies, the style, etc. It is currently between 111-114 degrees outside (Arizona) and the house is only has frames so there is NO air conditioning. I'm 23 weeks pregnant. Is this do able or should I talk to my boss about my concerns? By the way, we already had someone measure this house but she wants to try a new company just to "see where their pricing compares". I've worked here for 2 years and this is the first time we are exploring other options for drapery. Why now?!?

Re: Work vent...advice?

  • I would think it's doable but definitely not fun. Make sure to take some cold water with you. Other than that, being an interior designer sounds like a fun job!

  • Yep, just stay hydrated, you'll be fine.
  • Okay, I've been really nervous about it since its so hot outside!! Maybe I'll even bring some snacks too! Last two times I've been walking in the heat for 30 minutes I almost fainted. Thank goodness we have amazing winters to make up for our dreadful summers!
  • Maybe make sure you have some papers in hand to fan yourself with, too, if you get a flash?
  • Actually, It will be 115-117 this week!
  • I would talk to your boss. I'm in Key West this week and it's not nearly that hot but my feet have been swelling when I walk more than 45 minutes in the heat and I have to rest.
  • I would bring a few bottles of water with you and just keep drinking. Good luck!

  • Just lots of water. Yeah, it's going to suck. But it's really not unheard of and most pregnant woman I know, myself included, do not have and never have had AC. Again, yes it sucks. But as long as you stay hydrated there's really no harm.

I would talk to your boss. Especially if you felt like fainting because of heat before. I had to leave work the other day because our ac went out. It just got way to hot in the building for me. Plus we run dryers so it makes it hotter.

You definitely don't live where I live! ;)
I've never heard of anyone not having a/c here. We don't have snow days but instead we have heat advisory days! If the a/c goes out at work or school in the summer, we are typically sent home because it can get dangerous. I will definitely bring LOTS of water. Especially since this house doesn't have a roof yet, the sun will be pouring in. Thanks ladies!
  • I would talk to my boss. It's been 90 degrees here and I'm overheating. I think it depends on the person

I would talk to your boss. Maybe they will understand and have someone else do it? It's not worth risking your health. If you do end up doing it, I'd take two bottles of water (freeze one so it will be nice and cold when you finish the first). Good luck.
  • Definitely hydrate but don't drink cold water. It will actually make you hotter. Room temp or cool is best. Good luck!

I lived most of my life in California with the average summer temp. of 117 deg. Now I'm in New England with extreme humidity...

Geez where in Caifornia did you live? I feel your pain! I usually go to California to get a little break from the summer heat here. I am actually going to New England in a week! I've never been in the summer, but I was told to bring a light sweater.
  • I lived on the Central Coast, but you know how the "coastal" area is there, either you're ON the water or you're 45 minutes away haha. Unfortunately I was the second case so we got a lot of the inland, desert like heat. And you're definitely in luck for next week in NE. It's been such a weird year for temps but we haven't gotten to the nastiness of summer yet so I think you'll really enjoy the reprieve, especially after your job situation! We kind of ended up with a late spring so the humidity hasn't really kicked in yet :) It's fantastic. Hope you enjoy it!

Oh that's terrible! Living in California and being 45 minutes from the beach is totally unfair! Oh I'm glad to hear that about New England, I am very excited to go because the last time I went was in the peak of winter. This Arizona girl was NOT prepared and I'm surprised my body didn't go into shock. I hear the summers are beautiful and green! It will be a nice change from the desert landscape here.
  • Hello fellow designer! I'm barely making it through the humid days in pa! I would talk to your boss. Mine has been so accodomdating with going on jobs and helping with installs...making sure I don't lift anything and whatever else. You need to take care of you and baby so always voice your concerns. Can someone go with you?
