Newborn or 3M going home outfit?

I got a going home outfit for baby in newborn and 3M. Newborn goes up to 8 pounds and then 3M takes over. Since it wasn't cheap, I want to return one but since I'm going to wash it, I can't return the one I wash. My husband can't go back home to wash it after baby is born. While measurements are often wrong, I'm at a higher risk for a larger baby.
My question is if the baby is 7 pounds and I use the 3M size that's for 8 pounds, is there any harm?

Re: Newborn or 3M going home outfit?

  • I would go with Newborn. My 7lb 8oz didn't wear 0-3 until she was 6 weeks and my 7lb 13oz baby didn't wear 0-3 until 2-3wks old. Newborns lose weight the first couple of days too so I think baby would need to be 9-10lb at birth to wear 0-3 months.

  • It's hard because you really don't know how big baby will be. I still think newborn will be just fine though and thats what we're bringing.

  • Newborn. My son was born at 9lb 8oz and wore nb for a month, also. The 3 month old will swallow baby up!
  • Definitely newborn. My 8 1/2 lb baby wore newborn for a few weeks before switching to 3 M
  • I'd go newborn. If all else fails, have a less expensive 3m outfit as a backup.

  • I agree NB. DS was 7.14 and wore a premee size home.

  • DS was measuring big my entire last pregnancy so I got his hospital picture outfit in a 3m. He was 8.8 when born and his outfit was huge in him! I would go with the newborn size.
  • My first wore newborn size for at least a month. He was almost 8 pounds when born.

  • I went with newborn. Mine was expensive too and I just went with NB and already washed it. :)

  • My DS1 was a nine pounder and he fit in nb just fine:)
  • I'm glad someone asked this question and especially glad to read all your responses! My parents and sister gave me many cute newborn outfits and I was hoping she'd be able to wear then at least once. From the responses, it sounds like she just might!
  • Everyone told me not to buy nb clothes because they grow out of them so fast, but we ended up borrowing a bag of NB clothes because 3M swallowed her. DD was an average 7lb3oz and 18.5 inches... So yeah I agree go with nb.

I'm so glad this was posted! Everybody has told me not to get newborn clothes because my husband and I are both tall. People keep saying I will have a big baby. I'm not convinced of that because I'm being induced early and according to measurements ( I know they can be off) our little girl is in the 45th percentile. I guess I will get some nb clothes! How many outfits would a STM recommend?

Don't go too crazy. You can always pick up more later. I kept it pretty simple. Mostly footed pjs and onesies with a few matchables. Early babies tend to have issues with regulating their temperature for the first week at least so you might want to hold off on shorts or dresses for nb sizes.

A agree that a pack of onesies and a few footed sleepers should be enough :)

  • Newborn for us
First dd 7 pounds 11 ounces
    #2. 6 pounds 9 ounces
  • I didn't buy any special going home outfits. She's going home in just a regular baby outfit that I have so I'll be bringing both sizes. But if you have nice outfits id say newborn since most baby's are in the 7-8 lb range

  • My 10lbs 3oz baby still fit newborn for a week or so. Though his head was so big he immediately wore a 3-6 month hat.

  • 0-3M for me!

My first was 9 days late and 9 lbs 4 oz. Some NB clothes fit her but not all of them (some onesies were too short and could not snap, shirts/pants separates were wearable). I put all of the NB clothes away after only 2 weeks!

Her going home outfit was not a huge deal for me, I brought a 0-3M nightgown for her to wear home, the kind that has elastic at the bottom but is open, and long sleeves. We rolled up the sleeves so it was slightly roomy on her.

Carters NB clothes fit the longest so I might bring that this time, or just bring another 0-3 outfit that would work even if it's a little big.
  • New born. My son wore newborn home and he was 8.8oz

Even my 10lb5oz, 99th percentile length (can't remember what that is) baby could squeeze into a newborn sleeper!
  • Definitely newborn. We brought 0-3 month clothes for DS and he was swimming in them at 8 lb. 1 oz.

Newborn. My DD was 8lb13oz. I brought 0-3 months clothes and she was swimming in them. I actually had DH go out and buy a few newborn sleepers
  • I would recommend taking two outfits to the hospital, a NB & a 3 month. DS was 8 lbs 11 oz, and based on that should have fit a NB outfit, but he was 22 inches long, and not all NB outfits were long enough for him. He couldn't wear any of them after the first week.
As pp mentioned, you never know how big your baby is really going to be. (Despite doctor estimations)
