August 2015 Moms

Running mommas..

I cannot wait to get back into running. I have a brand new shinny bob waiting to be used and I am already planning 5k's for the month of September- I am due aug 3rd. My question is....
How soon did you return to running? I have been out of the game since 20 weeks. Also, how do breast feeding moms run? do you leak the entire time? I am not a marathoner or even a good runner I just enjoy running laps around my area and doing races from time to time.

Re: Running mommas..

  • I resumed all normal activity including light jogs at 6w. I was out going for walks with my jogger at 2w.

  • Yeah I'd say walks are fine, but wait until that 6 week check to make sure everything is healed before running again. It's going to kill me to wait that long, but it's better than prolonging recovery and all that jazz.

  • You might find that it takes a while to resume high-intensity exercise without bladder leakage. Wear a pad the first few times, just in case. If you have been pretty active, then you will probably be up for it around 6-8 weeks.
  • Thanks ladies. Does breast feeding change running at all?

Just a more supportive bra and maybe some pads if you're leaking.

  • YES!! to leakage everywhere. I have a pic of me running my first post partum 5k at 4 months after my last baby was born and all I can think of was how uncomfortable I was because I forgot to wear a liner that day.

It took a while for my boobs to be ok with the rhythm of running, but maybe just 8 or so weeks. I was walking at 2 weeks and jogging at 6 weeks. Back to regular 3 mile runs around 8-10 weeks. Just feed/pump right before you go out and you should be good.

I look back at my fitness journal from those times though and am so proud of what I accomplished (5k at 4 months, 10k at 5 months, and a half marathon at 6.5 months) and it helped lose the baby weight SO FAST.

I am concerned this time because I will be having a csection, and I have NO idea how that is supposed to work!

I did not experience a lot of issues with leakage. I'd usually feed then go for a run immediately after. That way, I knew LO would be okay for a while and I wouldn't feel so heavy.
  • I was back to running 2-3 weeks after DD2 but that's not advisable. My recovery was not as smooth as it should have been probably due to my excessive activity. Like the other ladies have said, 6 weeks is the normal go ahead time. I don't see anything wrong with getting out and going for a walk with baby as soon as you feel up to it. I have a double Bob and I, too, can't wait to hit the pavement!
  • 6 weeks! Can't wait!!!

  • I didn't have a big issue with leakage but I do remember needing a more supportive sports bra. There was a lot more jiggling going on.

  • I think I was back at very light running/walking around 3-4 weeks after my first but I plan to wait a bit longer this time and start with walking and yoga first. I read an article about how high impact activity can really impact pelvic floor issues if you try to do too much too soon after childbirth. So maybe just be sure to incorporate some good core exercises (NOT crunches! Look up exercises that are ok for post-partum) and squats along with your running- to help support your pelvic floor. I didn't find BF'ing an issue at all- doubled up on sports bras until things calmed down and like pp have said, nursing/pumping before running def helps.
  • You ladies are awesome! Thanks for all the info. I am so excited to get back into exercising since all I have been doing is couch surfing and waddling to the mailbox and fridge. :-) I'm sure my idea of running will be a fast walk for a long time. But it will be glorious!
