Decrease in movements?

So I'm 36 weeks FTM, and my little guy isn't moving much at all, which I'm finding alarming! Before this week I was convinced he was practicing some kind of martial arts in there, and now I'm lucky if I catch a "roll" or bump twice a day. I've asked a couple of other mama's and they claim this is normal at this stage in pregnancy, but it's stressing me out because his non-stop movements were my confirmation of him doing good in there. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: Decrease in movements?

  • Maybe he's running out of room? But seriously eat something or drink some juice. If you don't get 10 -20 movements in an hour Id call your doctor. And every movement counts. Even hiccups. Hope everything is fine. But if you feel like something is wrong if let your doctors know.

I'm 36 weeks and my doc says don't worry about kick counts as long as I can feel the baby move every four hours. She's running out of room so I won't feel as much movement from here on out.

I wrote in two weeks ago with this same question (I'm 38 weeks now:-) everyone told me that it was normal and I calmed down. What I have since noticed is that the movements are there, they are just different. If you're looking for martial arts, the baby is too big for that now. But I have noticed that if I sit still and relax, I can feel sliding, stretching, and the occasional poke- it's just WAY more subtle, and I was missing it before. Sometimes I can feel it better from the outside! It really is normal, I think:-)
  • I could have written this myself! I'm 35.5 weeks and yesterday and today so far LO has been moving less, or more subtly. I still feel it but it's way softer. I have an appointment this afternoon and plan to ask doc about it. I figured it was LO just having run out of room, but it still makes me nervous. Sounds like it might be normal, but that still doesn't make me relax.

  • I felt this way too about 2 weeks ago (35 weeks). I am pregnant with twins and although I could still feel some small movements it was wayyyy less. I read a lot that it was normal but knew I wouldn't feel better until I saw my doctor. When I called they had me come in for a NST and all was well! They were so nice about it and I felt so much better! Call and see what the doctor says... Hopefully they will see you to put your mind at ease, but again it is normal for the movements to change due to baby's size.

  • I called my doctors office about this when I was around 36 weeks weeks and they said to come in and they just monitored her for about an hour to make sure everything was ok and it was :) the doctor told me that if there is a decrease in movement to come in check. Our baby is also measuring small BUT I'm sure it would be the same for every case. Personally it doesn't hurt to check but it also is normal for the baby to not move as much because there isn't much room for the baby to move. I would monitor for the first 2 hours and make sure the baby is moving at least 10 times within that time and if the baby isn't moving that much, go in and check. If the baby is moving I'm sure the baby is fine :)
  • I think it is pretty normal at this stage, but it may be worth a call to your doctor to ease your mind. I had a day last week where I barely got any movement at all for 5-6 hours. I asked my midwife about of because I had an appointment anyway that day. She decided to do a NST just as a precaution, and it really put my mind at ease. Got to lay there and listen to baby girls heart beat for about 20-30 minutes. The funny thing was she would not stop moving during the NST. In my case the test was probably unnecessary but it gave me peace of mind and like my midwife said, they would rather do 10 of them that are unnecessary than have 1 person not call and have something be really wrong.

Remember babies have days that they are more or less active. My little girl was crazy active for like a week and then I had a couple of days where I didn't notice much at all unless I ate, laid down and did counts. Now she's back to moving around, just less true kicks. Part of it is that they do have less room to move. The othet thing is if you have a day where you are moving a lot and active, sometimes they will be less so because your movement can put them to sleep or just make you not notice. If you're worried, of course check with your doc though.
  • At this stage, it is normal for babies to slow down the jabs and strong kicks as they are indeed running out of room. HOWEVER, you should still feel a steady amount of rolls, squirms, etc. Get checked. I'm not trying to scare you but I had a 36 week stillborn. You know why I didn't go in to check her movements right away?? Because people kepts saying "oh its normal. Baby doesnt have much room." With this baby, I go in if her movement is even remotely less than normal. My high risk doctors said that statement is such bullshit. Babies should move the same. Its just different types of movement.
  • I came rushing up to the hospital yesterday for having no movements in 24hrs stressing, I got put on the ctg and she seen that my baby is moving but its just that I cant feel it...I was told have a big cold cup of water and lay down on my left with no distractions
  • At this stage they are running out of room in there so the movements won't be the massive kicks you were getting before. I've notice my baby feels more like he's stretching as opposed to kicking. My OB said if I don't notice any movements, lay down and concentrate. He said I should feel 5 movements in an hour or 10 movements in 2 hours. If not, go to the hospital. Try to do that when you know your baby is usually active.
  • So I thought I'd update since I had an appointment yesterday.

I told my doctor that LO hadn't been moving a lot and he took it seriously. Did a heartbeat check first and that was perfect at 140. Then he did a quick ultrasound (he said he was doing a bio physical on baby) to make sure fluid levels, fetal breathing etc was ok, and the cord wasn't wrapped around the neck. I got a 10 out of 10 score so he said it's probably just because LO is running out of room and/or was having a lazier day. However, because of this instance of decreased fetal movement I will have a NST done at every appointment until I deliver. He said the NST each week is to make sure baby isn't trying to tell us something underlying is wrong. I really appreciate that he's not just brushing it off.

And of course, LO is moving like normal again today. Hope your LO started groovin again :)
