Why kick count when...

I've been reading online n speaking to my midwife and everything seems to say the baby moves less from 30 weeks plus due to less space in your womb and the baby crossing their arms and legs etc. so what is the point in kick counting if the baby is going to be less active? Please no rude comments I know it's important to be in tune with your babies movements and know when somethig may be off but I'm just wondering why they tell us to kick count during the last tri

Re: Why kick count when...

  • Only one of my Dr's ever mentions kick counts and it's the old old man in the practice. The other Dr's just say to call if baby is "less active".

My doctor also has said not to do kick counts. They said to call if the baby is less active.
  • Oh really mine just says call if I havnt felt baby move in 24hours as she has less room in there now n movements will decrease a little anyways
  • I've never done kick counts and never had a doctor instruct me to do so (this pregnancy or my first).  They always just ask if baby is moving or if I've noticed any decrease in movement.
  • Less movement doesn't mean almost no movement. Their movement can still be a key to whether your baby is going through some kind of stress that might affect their health. Personally my last one and this little girl are more active if anything. Less space just means I'm feeling their movements everywhere lol.

  • I am 34 weeks and my midwife practice has not discussed kick counts nor have I been doing them. My little one is active every day, particularly morning and evening.
  • My Dr also said instead of kick counts just be aware of baby's movements. If she hasn't moved in several hours try to wake her with cold juice and a lie down, if that doesn't work, call and go to hospital.

She said I know my baby better than anyone by this point.

If you do want to keep counting, maybe ask for a realistic range of movements in a range of time that is ok?

  • I've never counted kicks, I just see a lot of people post about kick counting and movement questions. I agree while less movement doesn't me no movement
I've never had a very "active" baby she's always been chill haha so to me if my midwife said to kick count it wouldn't make sence as she's not the most active baby even though she is 100% healthy
  • Yeah I think the thing about kick counting is more just being away of drastic changes in your baby's movements. I don't do kick counts every day because I'm usually really aware of her many (and strong) movements throughout the day. But I do have an alarm set on my phone for around 8 to "do" kick counts... But I won't do them if I know she's been active. There are some days though where I may not have been aware of her movements or can't recall her being as active, on those days I'll do a quick kick (movement) count to make sure she's good.

  • I've never bothered with kick counts. My OB said the same as PP just call if I haven't felt any movement in 24hours.
I imagine they would stress people out more than anything.

  • I haven't kick counted. My little guy is literally on a schedule every day. I can tell you exactly when he will be wide awake and kicking and when he seems to be sleeping. I'm not worried about counting as like someone else said, I know my baby better than some doctor and in saying that, I will be able to tell if something isn't right. Especially because he's on a schedule lol
  • My dr has me do kick counts, but I usually do them at night because this little peanut definitely takes after DH. During the day, not so much movement, unless I'm trying to concentrate at work. But at night when I'm trying to go to sleep, that's when there's a dance party going on. I did find that on the weekends when I'm running around doing errands there's not much going so that's why I decided to do them at night to be a little consistent. Starting July 1st I have to go for a non stress test twice a week, so I hope the baby cooperates since 1p isn't really an active time.
  • I never really did kick counts either... he is usally very active as I'm trying to sleep. I've noticed in the past week I feel less kicks, more shifting around type movements. I guess he's running out of room... his movements now feel really weird... I can feel his back/butt shoved up against my belly and it pokes out funny... And then of course his feet shoved into my rib cage. I think he's a long baby... can't wait to see him!
  • My dr is having me be very vigil with keeping track of her movements, but I'm high risk. When I was pregnant with my son, they didn't have me count them. I guess it depends on your dr and your situation.
  • Hmm this is interesting. I'm not high risk but was told to do kick counts twice a day and to keep an eye out for any time of day that she is normally active but isn't. I do them once every morning and every evening. I also watch her patterns in between. My OB said at this stage (33 weeks) they expect the baby to have regular consistent sleep and wake cycles. I can set my watch by hers. I think my dr. is just one of the more cautious ones, but it puts my mind at ease knowing exactly what to expect each day.
  • I believe kick counts is a bit old school but definitely something to be aware of. Little girl was really quiet the other day while we were on vacation. Days like that, I will do a set or two of kick counts just to reassure myself that everything is okay.

My doc recommended to do kick counts but I am carrying twins, so there are times when I am honestly not sure who is kicking me! I have just been trying to pay attention to patterns as someone else said and would call if I didn't feel someone move for the whole day. I have one boy who is hyper and one who is super laid back AND anterior placentas so half the time I am not sure what is going on in there!

I only ever did kick counts because it was fascinating. My doc just asks "Are you feeling baby move?"

My doctor just asks if baby is active. She said if I'm worried to try to count them but besides that just make sure she's active. Sometimes she does kick, I can just feel her butt move from side to side.
  • This little guy is do active I don't even worry about kick counts. I'll know if something is off if I haven't felt him in a while. The only trouble I am having is we just got back from vacation where there was a 3 hour time difference so that is messing with our routine a little.
  • I wouldn't even consider mine kicks anymore. He does kick but I feel him roll and push up more than anything else.
