Choroid plexus cyst ?

edited June 2015 in November 2015 Moms
I had my anatomy scan with MFM yesterday and after a thorough 45 minute ultrasound the MFM doctor went over the results with us. When he was showing babies brain he went over the choroid plexus and on the left side he pointed and said "right here we could have a cyst, these things usually resolve themselves. Don't go google anything unless you want to scare yourself for no reason"

Of course when I got home I started googling.... And I have scared myself. A lot of what I found has said that the cysts do resolve themselves and aren't a big deal if you don't have any other markers (panorama and AFP came back perfectly fine for us)
Apparently the doctor has to bring it up even though a lot of them don't want to because it causes unnecessary anxiety and worrying.

Have any of the STM dealt with this before? Or do you know anyone who has?
I have an appointment with my OB on Thursday where I plan to talk about it more with her but maybe yall could give me some peace of mind until then.

  • I don't have experience with this, but I just wanted to say good luck! I'm sure you're stressed out, but I would trust your MFM doctor. Take care!

  • @brianna91chavez I know how you are feeling. We got a soft marker at our anatomy scan. There is some calcification on the heart, called an echogenic intracardiac focus. There are stories about them resolving themselves, and as an isolated marker, the doc wasn't concerned. I am still worried though. We are scheduled for another ultrasound in 4 weeks and were asked if we wanted to do the blood work (we turned down the first trimester screening). I am so worried. It's hard not to be. Keep us updated with how everything turns out for you! Sending you good thoughts and vibes!
  • No experience with this but if your doc isn't worried then try not to be. I know that's easier said than done

  • OP on my last BMB there were 2 ladies whose babies had CPCs at the A/S and both resolved by birth. As your MFM has advised don't freak out just yet, everything else come back normal.
  • Thanks ladies. When he said we "might" have a cyst and "usually" they work themselves out it just made me worry .... I'm not comfortable with the words might and usually, especially coming from a professional. I'm going to try not to worry anymore.
  • I don't have any experience, but I just wanted to say hopefully everything will be fine and ask your doctor as many questions as you can! Good luck Thursday
  • We didn't have the same exact type of cyst but for DS2, they found a cyst on the umbilical cord as well as a high/normal nuchal translucency (both soft markers) and baby boy was 100% healthy! They found the cyst at 16 weeks (MFM consult for early gestational diabetes) and it had resolved completely by 32 weeks. If your doctor didn't seem overly concerned and everything else came back fine, just try not to worry and definitely no more google! Lol I made myself sick with googling.

  • No advice, but hang in there. The odds are in your favor.

  • Will they do another U/S to check it?
  • I had this with my second baby. They found 2 or 3 cysts ( can't remember it was over 2 years ago). We had another ultrasound around 34 weeks to check on the cysts and they were gone. This is a common thing and your doctor was right, Google will only scare you. Try to stay positive because it really is very common and if it's not worrying the medical professionals then thats a definite plus. If all your other tests (if you had any) came back okay then the likelihood that this is attached to something else is slim to nil. Hugs though because I was in your position once and it is a scary thing to think of anything being wrong.
  • @lyankowi Yes, I have ultrasounds every four weeks because I am high risk due to a SB and two MC. They will look to see if the cyst has dissipated at each one. From what I've read a lot of cysts resolve themselves between weeks 26-34.

Thank you @Flashparade , I feel a lot better now. My panorama results showed very low risk to everything and AFP came back negative.

Thanks everyone, yall are great. I think I can relax a little more now.
  • @brianna91chavez glad to hear your other screenings came back normal. You will probably see the cysts go away in subsequent ultrasounds. Hope it all goes well and glad you are able to relax a little :)
  • My ultrasound showed a Cyst as well. There were no other markers so the doctor was totally not concerned with it! They are very common. Best of luck!
  • I am also going through this, at my 19 week US they detected a choroid plexus cyst. I had done the QUAD screening and everything came back normal with no risks. With those results the Dr said the cyst was not concerning because I had no other markers. They scheduled another US in 4 weeks (which feels like forever to wait!) to see if it resolves itself. It's hard not to worry and get upset even when the doctor told me not to.
Thank you for posting it was comforting to find a post when I searched for this.
  • @brianna91chavez wishing you the best. I'm sure you are ok - I have read about this on the High Risk boards and most resolve on their own.

Best of luck at your next scan! Be sure to update when you can.
  • I see babies with these after they are born all the time. And my baby had one at their anatomy scan. I'm not worried in the slightest. 1-2% of all pregnancies have them and they usually resolve on their own. Even if they don't resolve there is absolutely nothing that you need to do about it. Talk with your ob but I wouldn't be worried.
  • @rerawalt what happens with the babies that have them after they're born?
  • Nothing, they go away eventually. I don't know anyone that even recommends getting an ultrasound after birth but if it stressing you out you can always ask for ultrasound until you see that it is gone. Remember, it's not a brain defect, it's a pocket of spinal fluid that forms.
  • We found out baby has these today. Soft marker for edwards syndrome so we went ahead with harmony testing just in case. Scary but from what I understand a normal finding on up to 3% of ultrasounds and they generally dissolve by delivery. Looked in some medical journals at work and they said think of it like a blister on the brain, it's not a brain abnormality.
