Unisom vs Diclegis, please help me understand

Today I asked my obgyn office for diclegis which was recommended by a friend. I have lost 8 lbs in 4 weeks and I'm miserable. They said it's not on Kaiser's approved list and told me it was the same thing as unisom + b6 and to take that instead. Has anyone ever tried taking unisom during the day? I'm afraid it will knock me out. I understand diclegis is time released so it works ok during the day without the sleepiness. To be honest I'm more than bummed because I feel like they gave me a useless solution as I sit her trying to choke down saltines.

Re: Unisom vs Diclegis, please help me understand

  • I've just been taking one dose at night (half a unisom, half a B6). It works well enough to get me through the day without being tired. Then I start feeling shitty around 6pm again, but at least I'm at home.

Maybe try just the one dose before you go to bed and see if it's enough?

  • that's crazy. i'm pretty sure diclegis is the only category A med for nausea.
  • Unisom and b6 was the only thing that would take the edge off during my first pregnancy. I had hyperemesis, so I was thankful for anything that would make a slight difference. It made me sleepy, but was worth it to me because I could at least function.
  • Thank you ladies! Given me hope :)

I'm guessing they refuse it because of the cost. I can't think of any other reason. I bet they save a lot of money leaving it off their approved list

  • YES, I have been taking half a unisom at night (you have to get the tablets that say doxylamine succinate...there's a gelcap kind that does not work the same).

It makes a world of difference.  I have only taken it during the day once and it kind of did make me sleepy but sleepy is not as big of a problem as feeling pukey.

Now, I still can't eat like normal, but hey, at least I don't feel terrible and can get through the day.

Diclegis is a controlled release version of unisom.  That means that inside the capsule, there are many tiny little "dots", if you will, of the medication.  All of the dots are coated in varying amounts so that the coating dissolves at a different time, meaning that the medication is actually released all throughout the day, vs a traditional medication that is all immediately available to be absorbed.  Does that help at all?  :)

ETA: My laptop always autocorrects unisom to unison.  annoying.

  • For anyone taking the unisom, are you taking it every night? I'm wondering how safe it is to take nightly vs. Only on the bad days or days when you have things like a wedding to go to.
  • Another nighttime unisom taker. Works wonders for my sleep and my daytime nausea.

What about zofran? I know many women who took it daily all of first tri or longer.

  • I feel so much better today! It made a world of a difference. Zofran is a no go because I was told it's purpose is to help prevent vomiting and I'm only suffering from nausea.

I had my doubts about unisom but it really helped!

I'm going to have to take it every night. Since it's class A I'm not too worried. If you have a big event, then I'd just make sure to take it the night before. Also take it with B6

  • I just wanted to throw this out there for anyone thinking of trying Unisom. There are several forms and you want to get the Doxylamine version

I'm fairly sure zofran is a no go as it may increase the likelihood of birth defects, but it never hurts to ask your doc.

  • Is Diclegis supposed to make you crazy sleepy? I started taking it yesterday and I was so sleepy today...
  • @Blinggal24 I was really sleepy and still felt pretty awful for the first 4 days after I first started taking it.  After that, I noticed a decrease in my nausea and didn't feel as tired. I still like to take a nap in the middle of the day, but that could be pregnancy-related and not necessarily because of the Diclegis.
  • Thanks so much!!!
