December 2015 Moms

When did you start buying baby stuff?

Hey everyone,
I'm 14 weeks pregnant with baby no.2 - but it's my first time experiencing a proper pregnancy.

With my DS i was 15 years old and didnt find out until 26 weeks (you can say what you like but I had no idea)

I'm just wondering when is it too soon to buy baby stuff i.e clothes, changing stuff etc?

My DS is now 7 years old so it's basically like being a FTM!
I don't want to start buying stuff now because I know things can happen, but everytime I see these small sleepsuits etc I reeeeeally want to buy some!

I dont know when is too soon?

TIA ladies!

Re: When did you start buying baby stuff?

  • I'm a FTM and I think I'll wait until I find out the sex around 18-20 weeks.

  • I'm 12 weeks and just started a registry as a list for me to go off of when the time comes. We probably won't purchase anything until October-November. We're waiting until the shower to see what we will need after that. :)

The grandparents will probably buy furniture at 16 weeks when we find out the gender. Then for most stuff I plan to wait until after baby showers to see what else we end up needing. Unless I just find an awesome deal lol!
  • Are you having a shower? I bought sheets already but this is my third and my girls needed extra sheets lol so I bought green and grey! But typically I wait until I find out the sex so I can buy boy or girl but I was 3 months Preggo wth my first when I bought her crib and dresser and rocking chair. But only because I would never get a great deal like that again. It's never too early. Do whatever you want it's your kid!!!!!
  • i bought a few unisex (which is hard to do) outfits after my first ultra sound to sort of celebrate, but I haven't bought anything else! I will wait until I know the gender! But after 12 weeks the risk of a MC is much lower so I think it's safe!

I'm also sure my mom has bought a to of stuff (it's the first grandchild)
  • I have already starting buying things...I'm 15 weeks tomorrow and this is our second. DS is 4 and since he was from a previous marriage that ended when he was 6 months old, I had kept next to nothing of his (besides keepsakes)...I have bought things I have found great deals on & waiting to buy clothes until I found out we were having another boy. For the big 'gear' items (mamaroo, car seat, stroller, wearable carrier, crib) I will wait until the Fall unless I find an impassable deal.
  • I am 13 weeks. We bought the crib (MIL paid for half) this week. Since it was an ikea crib the go in and out of stock so since it was in stock we decided to get it. My sister lives over seas and won't be back until after the baby is here so she gave me a few Christmas themed onsies (due Dec 18). I'm waiting until after our shower to buy much except diapers. Also if I see a great deal on something like an ergobaby carrier I might get it.
  • I'm 15 weeks and my shower will be when I'm 19 weeks. We won't know the gender until after though :( we're stationed pretty far away from home, and since we'll be home for the month of July I decided to have it then. I wouldn't get one otherwise!
  • I say if you want to go for it! Having a baby is exciting!! This is baby number 2 for me so I really don't need much. However, I got my infant carseat already. It was on zulily for a steal of a price!! My parents are getting us a double stroller and we are team green so most of my clothes shopping will be after baby is here!

  • All I've brought is a snuggle blanket type thing, I keep looking about but can't find any clothes I like that could be for both boys or girls so I'm gonna wait till I know the sex at 18/20 weeks then il buy tons, theirs also a pram that I like but it comes in two colours one for a girl and one for a boy so I have to wait till I can get that also

I won't be having a shower as it's not really something we do much here in the UK!
We get to find out at the end of July so i'm trying reeeeeally hard to just wait until then but if i see something unisex that I just can't ignore then I suppose i'll just get it!

I, too am looking at a pram that can come in blue or black, the blue one is beautiful so I don't want to just go unisex with the black until I know. If it's a boy then its 110% the blue one!

It's just soooo hard to walk past stuff that look so cute at the moment! Although I am starting to show a little now so I may not feel as silly when I next have a look!
  • We've been TTC for over 2 years. We had a MC in Jan at 6w but bought a crib anyway because we wanted to focus on happy thoughts. We bought the other big items whenever we saw a great deal (i.e. my favorite Baby Jogger stroller new-in-box on clearance at Buy Buy Baby for more than 50% off plus my 20% off coupon). I'm 12w2d now and we've managed to buy most of what we'll need for baby. We aren't expecting much help from our families so we've been buying things here and there the past 3 months.

Any time is a good time if you've budgeted for baby. If you want to be on the "safe side" wait til you're at least 12 weeks. Talk to family to see what they're planning on helping you with, if that's an option, then go from there. Just make sure you set a budget for yourself and stick to it. It's easy to over spend.

We've been buying since 8 wks. A pack of diapers here and there, a starter set of our bottles that were on clearance, a $50 manual breast pump that was marked down to $5, etc.

We found out it was a girl last week so my parents bought our pack n play and swing this weekend.

This is baby #3. Number 2 was supposed to be it so we got rid of EVERYTHING!!! We are trying to plan ahead as much as possible!
  • Ladies! Are you stocking up on diapers/wipes? I wanted to start last week with out bi-monthly Costco trip but my hubby thought it might still be too soon!

My mom just bought me a diaper bag yesterday...she was shopping in Delaware and the bags were on sale half off, so she decided not to wait til we find out the sex.

I keep thinking I should start stocking up on diapers and wipes, just haven't done so yet. And I was thinking about formula, but I know that not all formula will work for all babies so I don't want to stock up on one kind just to find out it doesn't work!

This doesn't count really, but I bought my first baby outfit the day I found out I was pregnant (I was 3 weeks and change) but I bought it for my husband. I surprised him with a pretty box filled with booties, a hat, a baby outfit and a pee stick :)

This is baby number two so we won't need as much last time but there are some things we will need... I'll probably buy stuff if I find good deals on things we need but otherwise, I probably won't really think about it until I'm in the third Tri. I'm sure I'll be able to find some good black Friday deals if I can hold out that long!
  • Oh I bought a pair of baby booties for my pregnancy announcement!!! They should be here tomorrow
  • I'm 12 weeks and have started hitting the garage sales. Good deals out there!
  • This is baby number 2 and it's a boy. So far we've only bought clothes. I would wait to buy diapers closer to 7 month so you can still return them if the baby doesn't do well in them. And make sure you keep all your receipts!

This! Thank you. I was wondering how to do diapers. My first thought was to stock up when we see great deals or coupons because we're having two but I'm paranoid since I'm a ftm that I won't like the brand or the babies will have a reaction to them.

  • This is baby #3 but I remarried and my youngest is 8. We had nothing. So I'm 11 weeks and already have a tub, bassinet, boppy pillow, bouncer, breast pump, diapers, little bathroom/thermometer set...and decor for baby room ....I picked up most with my mom at resale stores, etc. we are so excited :) I even picked up a few newborn girls stuff at yard sale..figured if it was a boy I'd have an excuse to do more shopping lol and just save it for my 4th (here's hoping). Anything I get at baby shower is a bonus. I'm a nurse and like to be prepared. :-P
  • We have a HUGE baby/kid consignment sale twice a year where I live. Thankfully, I should know the sex of this baby before the summer sale, which is great if this is a girl. We have all the boy stuff already. My mother is planning a baby sprinkle for me in the fall, which will be more like a celebration of the baby to come and diaper party.

I'm 15wks and change. We bought a few clothes over the weekend but that's really it. We plan on waiting until after the showers to pick up the leftover "gear"
  • I am 12 weeks 4 days and I am starting to get things for the nursery and my family has been picking up a few things toys or activity mats.  I have our crib, changing table, glider, three gender neutral outfits, slippers, and my mom ordered our car seat from Costco and that arrived yesterday :)

Didn't start yet... I'm only 12 weeks (tomorrow)
  • 14 weeks today. All we've purchased are grey and white chevron curtains for the baby's room since we recently bought a house and had to buy all window coverings anyway. I've started putting large items on an amazon.com registry as I do research and we decide what we want, but this won't become public knowledge until down the road. We're staying gender neutral with everything, so finding out the sex isn't as big a deal. I'm tempted to not tell anyone the sex when we do find out to avoid a bunch of frilly pink or 'Lil Slugger type items...

Check individual store policies. I seem to remember a few (like Babies R Us, I want to say) has it where if it's purchased from your registry you have a year to return it and they send e-receipts.
  • I'm a first time mom and the only thing I personally purchased for baby was a CD of lullabies...that I bought at our library used book sale two weeks before I found out I was pregnant!  I just thought it would be a "nice to have" for a someday baby.  I have bought about 8-10 items of maternity clothing which have come in handy since I busted out of my normal suits and slacks at 11 weeks :-/

I don't have any immediate plans to buy anything but I am sure we'll need to start thinking about furniture within the next couple months, especially since much of it has to be pre-ordered.

  • I just look around at the shops and pick what I like and make a list in my mind and then wait for it to go on sale lol. I just got the bassinet I had being eyeing up that went on sale for almost half the price. :) I guess that's one of the perks of starting early. But would wait 12 weeks just to be sure.

Ok so there are a couple things around my area on sale right now so I'm probably going to get them whilst they're half price. Still got another 6 weeks till we find out the sex so may as well buy the household items that are on offer for now!
