Cows milk allergy-switching to formula. HELP!

so since about 3 weeks my baby went from happy to absolutely miserable! She cries hysterically 24/7 nothing really helps. Dad can't soothe her only me and even then it's not easy! Currently I'm exusively breastfeeding and when the dr told me she most likely has a cows milk allergy she said to cut out my dairy and see if that helps. My baby screams from pain and I can't wait so we decided to switch her to Nutramigen formula but she's not wanting to take it. Has anybody else had to switch from breast to bottle? Was it hard? What did you do and how long did it last before baby was happy with the formula.
Oh and my baby is about 4 and half weeks old. Thanks in advanced!

I have not made the official switch but I was reading up on goving formula because we had a long trip to tennessee for a wedding. Anywho it said the best way is to fill bottles with breast milk for a few feeds then slowly add formula to the mix to let the LO get familiar with it. Also, it would probably take less time for you to cut dairy them to officially be formula. So if you want to end up with formula still cut dairy from diet while making the transition. Could also be the nipple on the bottle...they have nipples that have a flow like breastfeeding that may help.

  • I BF and supplement with formula (due to weight loss) and have had no issues with him taking the bottle or formula! We use the avent natural bottles as they are supposed to mimick breastfeeding. Goodluck!!
  • By process of elimination I've noticed my DS has a ton of gas when i have cows milk. I have decided to go dairy free, which isn't too hard for me since I was an almond milk drinker before pregnancy. During pregnancy almond milk made me sick.

Not to be semi-judgemental.... But why switch to formula so quickly? Have you thought about still BF, and eliminating dairy? It's really not as huge a deal, as it might seem. Almond/coconut/rice milk isn't all that bad, and has added health benefits not only for baby but for you too!

I was wondering the same thing?
  • I am dairy free because I'm intolerant to it. I am able to tolerate cheese because it is processed, just no milk, cream, or yogurt. There are tons of alternatives for dairy products!

Be careful...its milk proteins typically that babies dont like. So soy and what not typically will not help. I would cut large dairy things first...milk, butter, cream cheese, cottege cheese, and yoguart. Most babies will show signs of improvement just from those major items being removed.
  • My last baby was allergic to dairy and soy proteins. I tried cutting dairy out of my diet and didn't notice a difference after a week so we tried six different formulas. She was way worse on the formulas (luckily I had kept pumping). So I did a lot of research on the Internet (my dr wasn't much help and was pushing formula, which I didn't want to do, and ended up not working). I found that a lot of babies that are allergic to the dairy protein are also allergic to the soy protein, and that it can take up to 3 weeks to be completely out of yours and babys systems. I started reading every label and cut out dairy and soy 100% out of my diet. Make sure to read labels!! By the third week I had a completely new baby. I would suggest reading about MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance). I found so much good information and food ideas. Good luck!!
  • My last LO had MSPI...cutting milk and soy protein is tough for sure but I saw improvements within a day or two...and within a few weeks (learning all the ways milk protein is hidden in ingredient lists took some trial and error) I had my happy nurser back. I highly recommend not giving up on nursing yet. LO outgrew her intolerance around 14 months and now LOVES cheese and yogurt.

Google MSPI like a previous poster recommended. So many great mommy blogs full of information!
  • We decided to go for the formula because of how much pain she was in, she was absolutely hysterical 24/7 and started developing a rash all over her face. I couldn't stand to see my lo in pain anymore. One night on the new formula (Nutramigen) and the rash is gone and she already seems happier. Thanks for the advice though! :)
