Giving birth at 35 weeks

Okay so I've been in preturm labor for 2 and 1/2 weeks now, I've gotten 4 shots to stop everything. So my doctor told me I could have him once I hit 35 week which is 6 days away. Is it bad that I want to have once I hit 35 weeks? Btw this is second baby had my first at 36 weeks.

Re: Giving birth at 35 weeks

  • I just started preterm labor this last week at 33+3....got the shot to stop the contractions as well, sent me home. Still having them the last couple of days but nothing to send me back in yet. My doctor said the same thing that once I hit 35 weeks she won't give me anymore shots. Only difference with my situation is I had preterm labor at 29 weeks with my first son but ended up with a c section at almost 41 weeks. So this one is scheduled to be at 39+2 unless my water breaks on its own first. If history repeats itself I'll just be dealing with painful contractions that don't do anything to my cervix until my section. But I'm kinda with you....I told my husband I don't want a premie baby at 35 weeks but i wouldn't be upset if my water broke at 37-38 weeks!! Best of luck to you! Preterm is no fun.

  • Personally I would hold off until 37. If the baby is preterm you could wind up living in the NICU until he's ready to go home. Better to have baby cooking in your belly than living in an incubator.
  • Probably what your doc meant was that he wouldn't stop your labor again IF you did go into labor come 35 weeks. If you delivered your last one at 36, chances are that you will start labor somewhere in that neighborhood again. But it's not a definite thing. Just keep and open mind and know you may go at 35, or just as likely go to 36 or 37. Good luck!
  • I understand wanting to have the baby as soon as you can, however if the baby will be a premie its not worth it to me. My cousin had a premie over two months ago and she is still just at 6 pounds. Can't even stress how hard it is to see that.
  • Try to hold off if you can! I had my guy two weeks ago at 35+1 and while he has been relatively healthy, so far no NICU and only needed 2 minutes of oxygen in the delivery room, he has struggled just because he was so early. For the first 24 hours we were worried about his glucose levels and since then it has been jaundice. He is still not up to his birth weight yet and is two weeks old today. We were in the hospital for 5 days and then had home nurse visits daily for an additional 4 days. Since then I have had to take him in every day to the dr for weight checks and blood tests. This poor baby has been poked so many times I feel so bad for him. Friday his pediatrician wanted to admit him to the NICU to put him on a feeding tube to help him gain weight (he's gaining about an ounce a day but not enough). It's tough we are feeding him constantly. We find out Monday if he gained enough over the weekend or if we need to take him back to the hospital. Honestly they have told us another week or two in the womb and he wouldn't be struggling so much to kick the jaundice. Let them cook a little longer if you can as a week or two can make a big difference!
  • With my first I wanted to participate in a walk athon at 35 weeks. Doc okayed the walk and said he'd let me deliver if I went into labor, I so wanted to as well. Didn't, delivered at 40+1.
