Baby room and two story houses!

Okay, it just hit me today that our baby will only be in a bassinet for a few months and then will need to go to the crib.
It's stressing me out about having the baby upstairs that soon!
I would love to have some advice from moms that have two story homes and their baby set up.
Obviously first time mom here! :)

Re: Baby room and two story houses!

  • Maybe invest in a good baby monitor, perhaps one with video would give you a little more comfort knowing you could still see your little one?

  • Keep the baby in your room for as long as you are comfortable and then just get a video monitor. You'll know when you are ready to move him/her.
  • You don't necessarily need a video monitor. I've seen it cause more anxiety in the already anxious-prone.

I prioritized range so I could go hang in the neighbor's backyards all around the cul-de-sac without interference. I could also set the sensitivity so I would only be alerted at actual crying. I'm a really light sleeper and at 6 months every grunt and whimper would having me bolting awake. That's when LO moved to her own room.
  • My brother and SIL moved their son upstairs after a few months. They used a video monitor to ease their minds, and didn't have any weird problems with it.
  • I have a 1 yr old whose room is across the hall from us (we literally share a wall) we still use a video monitor with her and love it! We are in the same boat though, when baby comes either our 1 yr old moves downstairs alone or we do and put both kiddos upstairs.... We don't know what to do either.
Also, With our first we had her in her own crib, in her own room, the first night. We plan to do the same with our second. We read the book "healthy sleep habits happy child" which recommended that. It's been great, we have a great sleeper.
  • DS's room is downstairs and our room is upstairs. He slept in our room for the first 6 months. We had planned to move him sooner but he was still waking up multiple times per night and we just weren't ready. When we did move him, the video monitor was a godsend. When he would wake up, we were able to tell by his body language whether he was just fussing or maybe having a bad dream, in which case we knew we could give him a few minutes to see if he'd settle down on his own, or if he was legitimately upset and we needed to go to him.

We're planning to do the same thing for baby #2 - keep him/her in our room until MOTN wakeups are fewer and father between and then rely on the video monitor.

  • Thanks, So a good monitor is a must. You guys are all so helpful!

As for the baby staying in our room for 6 months, is it okay for them to be in a bassinate for that long? I figured they outgrow that sooner!

Check the weight limits. We used a pack n play with bassinet attachment. When he got close to the weight limit on the bassinet attachment we removed it and put him in the main part of the Pack n Play.

  • Depends upon the bassinet for weight restrictions as well as size. I'm a FTM so don't have a crib or bassinet yet and have been looking at (and slightly overwhelmed by) the options. Right now I'm leaning towards the Chicco Next 2 Me Bedside Crib, which seems more like a bassinet in terms of size and is good for the first six months approximately.

  • I'm just going to use a pack n play in our bedroom with an upgraded mattress for better sleeping.
  • I take it this is your first since this hasn't been an issue in the past? If that's the case, I have friends that have set up a mini baby room in the corner of an office, Ma dining room or some other rarely used room until they were comfortable with moving the baby upstairs. My sister even kept the crib in her walk in closet until he was a year.
