Itchy bumps

anyone else struggling with extremely itchy legs? I started itchy uncontrollably around 16 weeks and it hasn't gotten much better. Very small skin colored bumps appear on different areas of my legs when I'm itchy then they disappear. Lotion doesn't help at all. Then today I woke up with two big hives or welts on my leg and one on my buttocks. These big bumps were pale and looked like big bug bites but weren't, then they turned red/pink for the rest of the day. Anyone have any idea what's going on? My cholestasis tests came back negative.

Re: Itchy bumps

  • I have that as well. I just figured I touched something I didn't know I was allergic to. My skin has already changed so much so I wasn't really worried about it.

  • PUPPs rash maybe? I've never had it, but its the first thing that comes to mind. I've heard stopping dairy can help with it for some reason...
  • Definitely ask your doctor

My suggestion (no medical experience whatsoever just sensitive skin) is it could be an allergic reaction. Avoid anything with scents, dyes and perfumes that goes on your skin - laundry detergent, lotion, body was etc. see if that helps. If I use scented laundry detergent or scented lotion I get an itchy rash

Pupps is typically on your stomach in the stretch marks. Sounds more like hives, eczema, or heat rash to me. Maybe a combination. Check with your doctor. Don't forget: don't scratch, drink your fluids, wear light weight clothing or none at night, and keep the air temp cool. Also consider changing what type of soap you use and the take cooler showers/baths. If none of this works, start looking at food allergens. (I've had my fair share of skin itchies and this is always the steps I start taking to relieve the itch)
  • Yes! Things that helped:

I skipped shaving for a week
I washed legs with Aveeno Baby Excema wash in cold water once or twice a day
Used Aveeno Baby excema lotion after washing
Tried not to itch- it just exacerbated things
Getting in a chlorinated pool helped a LOT!!
  • I had the same thing that you are describing on my arms.  I called my OB and she said to take benadryl and recommended me to a dermatologist.  They prescribed me some cream to put on it.  Basically i used the cream once a day and the benadryl as needed (no more than recommended though) as well as put an ice pack (which helped A LOT) on my arms when I was itching.  The itch went away after about a week and a half, but it seemed like the longest week and a half ever!

Call your OB though, don't start taking anything without consulting them first.
  • Thank you very much I'll try these! Benadryl unfortunately didn't work for me but I'll try the aveno products and maybe try to cut dairy to see if that helps? My doctor said she wasn't sure what was going on, which is frustrating, but I'm seeing her again tomorrow so I'll ask more about these options. Thank you!
  • Sounds just like mine. And I have pupps :(
  • Get some grandpas pine tar soap. Smells awful but it's the only thing that helps me
  • I just found out today from my doc that I have PUPPS. I thought they were the beginnings of stretch marks. I'm so itchy I just can't take it! My doc prescribed cortisone for me. It's helped a bit, but I feel like I have to keep lathering myself up like we butter a butterball turkey on Thanksgiving. Gah! If the itching doesn't subside or at least get better, my doc said she'll prescribe me something stronger with steroids. I want to avoid that at all cost so I'm going to ride it out with the cortisone cream and hope for the best. I will definitely try the oatmeal baths and perhaps the grandpa's pine tar soap.
