Coffee?

Some say coffee is bad some say coffee is ok.
When I read the articles while surfing the web, it can get scary or relieving.
My doctor said its ok to drink a cup of coffee and if I want 2 a day.
I haven't been going coffee crazy as I used to drink black coffee, I enjoyed it.
However, I tried to be good and without the coffee I'm very sleepy and disorganized. I can make it without it but I seem not to have a problem and the baby is ok too.
But I can't help to worry because including my mom, family, friends and some coworkers mention that they haven't drank coffee at all.

I'm having coffee with milk and sugar, a small size deli/truck coffee, once a day in the morning.
I tried not to have it at all I get really cranky. I tried doing one day with and one day without, for a long period in the first months (I'm 5 months now) and it was ok. But not great.

I just want to hear what you think and what your doctor tells you about it.

Re: Coffee?

  • I'm on my 3rd and still have a cup or two at least every other day. I feel better drinking some coffee than I would smoking or drinking alcohol! :D

Personally, I gave up coffee since we started TTC. I had a miscarriage previously, and have read caffeine increases the chances of one. I'm sure I'm just being extra cautious, since I've also read you can have 200mg a day and I know plenty of women who have just one cup a day and went on to have perfectly healthy babies. I'm definitely a bit slower at work without caffeine and am less focused, but I am okay with it as I know it's in the best interest of my baby.

    Edited for an autocorrect fail.
  • My OB said 2 cups a day is fine. I just recently felt well enough to drink it again. Heavenly to get it back. This is my 4th pregnancy and having drank coffee every one I still ended up with perfect babies. I wouldn't worry too much. There are a lot of judgy people when you are pregnant. Try not to care what they think. I have only indulged in Starbuck's once and got plenty of bad looks for that one. No more Starbuck's for me though with diabetes. Black coffee it is. If you are worried, but still need caffeine some teas have much less caffeine than some coffees.
  • My dr said one small cup a day is ok, 2 cups if I really need the extra boost on occasion. I have a cup at work about half of the days. I used to drink coffee all day, every day, so this is a huge change, but manageable. All of my coworkers said they drank coffee during their pregnancies without problems.
  • It's really good to hear your thoughts. All matters as I got concerned last week. And I did check with my doctor today again, she says it's ok. I just don't know if it hurts the baby or if it'll make it weigh less.. There are some scary articles, it's my first so I guess I'm getting a little too worried..
  • I have an am cup and sometimes 2 and usually a coke at lunch. I also haven't followed the rules and have had deli meat, sushi, and glass of wine on Friday nights. My good friend and OB off ACOG guidelines says were fine. She mainly chirps about not drinking enough water. I don't have a desk job and it's nearly impossible to get enough h2o unless I were to walk round with a camel pak!

This is pretty much what the NP told me at my 16w appointment.  One or two cups is fine (key word: cups -- not ventis).
  • I'm the worst. I'm up from 4:30am until around 9:30pm most days. You'll need to pry my coffee from my cold dead hands. Granted, I drank almost zero caffeine until I was 14 weeks. Then I loosened up.

  • My doctor told me one thing of caffeine a day is fine. Personally I haven't had a drop since I got pregnant because I have HORRIBLE acid reflux to begin with, pop and coffee makes it worse and you add pregnancy into the mix and it's a recipe for disaster. I also had a previous miscarriage and I'm a little paranoid...but I would say for most people that don't already have issues with pop and coffee 1 thing a day is fine.
  • The book Expecting Better explains the issue with coffee, as well as a lot of other things, really well. Coffee in moderation is fine. The correlation between coffee and miscarriage is because nausea keeps most from wanting/drinking coffee and nausea is a sign of a healthy pregnancy.

Coffee has been my lifesaver on days when I'm extra snippy. I only drink a cup or two max, but my doc told me it is fine in moderation. No more than 300mg per day, and I never come anywhere near that
  • I fully intended to drink coffee throughout my pregnancy until it started making me sick. Go figure. I still drink tea for my caffeine fix when I need something though!
  • Hi, I didn't have any caffeine until around 12 weeks. I have a little can of Starbuck's double shot espresso every day. There is 140 mg of caffeine in it, I think the suggested intake is no more than 200 mg a day. My baby is fine. To each their own really, do what you feel comfortable with. I've had women at work wave fingers at me for having coffee but really, it's none of their business.

This for me too. I can't stand coffee unless it's iced right now and it sucks because my toddler is teething which makes life hell. I want to want it then I might not feel so grumpy and exhausted. Those that can drink coffee, pour some out for me.
  • I am not a big coffee drinker but when I do want a cup I reeeaaallly want a cup! I have switched to the decaf Starbucks, it still has about 15-25mg of caffeine, depending on size. So for me it tastes like regular coffee, still has a little caffeine but is well below the 200mg daily max recommended.

Pre pregnancy I was a huge coffee drinker but when I got pregnant with our son I gave it up completely. This time I drink decaf a couple times a week and share a mocha with my husband a couple times a month. I'm pretty sure my mom drank a cup a day when she was pregnant with my sister and I. I'm in the moderation boat.
  • I'm in the coffee in moderation boat too. I study full time and tried to give up but felt I had no brain without it!

I literally was failing university due to coffee withdrawals/fatigue. Ridiculous I know.

    Don't worry too much I think it's only a problem If you're having 3+ a day.
And even then the research doesn't seem all that concrete that it would cause any harm.

    Enjoy your cuppa!

  • I was told to enjoy 2-3 cups a day with out any guilt.

I never was a big coffee drinker but I have one every few days. I've been doing a lot of iced chai lattes too. And every few days a fountain Pepsi or coke.

I was getting a lot of headaches and my midwife told me to make sure I was having a little caffeine a day.
  • I also enjoy coffee and/or steeped tea without any guilt. If I go to Starbucks, I ask for a half caff. If you want two in a day, you can have a half coffee / half decaf in the morning and afternoon.

If you plan on drinking any caffeine after baby and breastfeeding I recommend a small amount once a day or so with my first baby I avoided all caffeine and after she was born she couldn't sleep if I had any caffeine even a piece of chocolate! Second child I drank small amounts through pregnancy and she slept fine while bf.
  • I have 1-2 cups every single morning and usually an ice tea in the afternoon, same with my first pregnancy too
  • Moderation. The key to anything is moderation. I eat & drink (including coffee & fizzy) what I like but in moderation. If I drink a lot of fizz or coffee I up my water intake. For every coffee I drink, I will have 2 pints of water.
  • Doctors opinions are different, but experience is for real.
Of course I trust my doctor, no question there for sure:) I'm questioning it because it's my first pregnancy and I am the kind of person that likes to hear real experiences. Everyone is different so don't be quick to judge ^.^

And my child was never affected by anything I ate or drank. It really is different for every baby.
  • I've been reading all the comments and thank you for all that shared their thoughts.
Unless I feel bad, I think I'll keep my 1 cup of milky coffee in the mornings:))
  • Hahaha ok:) have a nice day

Ugh just listen to the medical professional you chose. Or not whatever but coming to us and asking a question that has been asked many times in the last few months is silly. Especially because you don't trust the advice the medical expert you are paying gave you.

To then post a "ya'll are mean thread" is again silly after you got one tame piece of advice you didn't like. I will give you yet another piece you won't like. Listen to your doctor or not, worry about every tiny thing or not, these are all small things compared to what you are going to have to decide once your baby arrives. So save yourself the headache and work in growing a thicker skin because as a new mom you will be defending every little choice to nosy family etc and it seems that you are quite sensitive.
    100 love tits for this!!!!!
  • Have a nice day ladies. I'm keeping my coffee as I said this morning.
Hugs and loves.. I'm actually having fun reading the comments, it's educating.
  • Oh lord. :) There's just no middle point right.
Really, have a genuine nice day. Meant no harm but to think I can ask a question on a form:) so that's it.

As long as it's what you wish to hear. We know. Have a nice day and whatnot.
  • Ive completely given it up along with Coke. I tried moderation but cold turkey was easier for some reason
