When are you opening stuff?

Random question but out of curiosity when is everyone opening baby stuff? Like if you got a pack n play or a bottle starter set, etc.. are you waiting until baby is here or are you opening stuff now to organize it? We've got so many boxes from the furniture alone that I hate to wait and accumulate more cardboard.

Re: When are you opening stuff?

  • I'm due sept 5, so probably beginning of August. Our shower is end of July, so add a couple weeks to get everything together and I'd like to have it all ready to go by middle of August. I'm mentally preparing to bring home baby early, only because of BP and a couple other issues. I figure it doesn't hurt to be ready.
I'm only opening a couple bottles and one type of diapers etc until we see what she likes

  • I have opened most things. I haven't set up the crib because we are having new floors installed. With my first I probably had everything setup about a month ahead.
  • As it comes in the mail:). I'm too excited to wait. That being said all I have recieved so far is the car seat and stroller. Waiting on the furniture which should be here any day now and we will open that and get it put together so that I know where I want the shelves my dad is going to build us to go. Other than that we probably won't get anything else till our showers which aren't till August and I'll open as needed at that point.
  • Not until the baby is here safe and sound.

  • I got all my baby gear used, but it's clean and sealed up in the garage until probably August. We'll want everything set up and ready for baby at least 2-3 weeks before her estimated arrival, but that is only to double check that everything is in working order, fits in our tiny room, is safe and clean, and doesn't need replaced. Whatever you want to do is fine, but I like to over-prepare :-)
  • I'm opening things as we get them. With my daughter I wasn't able to get everything in order because i had to be on bedrest. In don't want that to happen again. My baby shower isn't until July 25th and ill open everything shortly after.

So far we only have our crib and changing table set up. We just moved and we got them for free from a friend. We only have those and some clothes in a box. I'm waiting until after our baby shower to buy things. I'm pretty sure I'll be setting opening and setting stuff up as I get them. I'm too excited and worry about not having things set up once baby comes.
  • I've opened everything to organize it, I selfishly need to open everything involving baby as soon as I get it lol
  • I'm going to be setting up towards the end of July. I go back to work in August (teacher), so I have the time then to get started. It also gives us plenty of time to gather things we need over the following two months. We had a baby shower a few weeks ago with my family out of state and got a lot of what we need aside from a few bigger items and must haves. We've also got paint, new doors, and new carpet going in over the next few weeks so I really can't start until then.
  • I would have my nursery set up fully by now if we weren't moving to our new house next month :| We get the keys July 3rd, have some minor renovations to undergo and then will be transferring everything over and setting it up. I literally have a whole bedroom FILLED with boxes from crib/changer/dressers/stroller/car seat/bins upon bins of things we bought.. And about 200 babies r us bags, lamps, Walmart, bassinet, tons of clothes in the bags still.. my god.. The list goes on... NONE of it is open. I can't wait to get my hands on it all! I'm sure after the shower we will be drowning in baby stuff lol.

    So exciting
  • Not until the beginning of August for me but I am going to set up the crib as soon as that comes next week
  • We're not buying anything new (dd1 is not even 2) but I'm planning on getting everything out of storage and washing things around the middle of August. I'm not due until 9/30/15
  • I know this is morbid but I keep thinking that I shouldn't open anything in case something goes wrong. It has happened to a few people I know and that's weighing heavily on me

  • @thinkpink101 trust me I understand that thought too. But I'm going to go on faith.
  • We are getting furniture set up now along with the clothes and toys and other things we got used so I have time to make sure everything is washed or wiped down before baby gets here. And the stroller and car seat are going to come out of their boxes in a couple of weeks too so I can start getting the dogs used to walking with a stroller, ect. Everything else is going to stay unopened until baby gets here just in case it doesn't work for us.

I've washed and put away her clothes, blankets and diapers. But nothing else is ready. I don't have boxes of stuff sitting around but I'm an eager beaver. If I did have stuff I wouldn't be able to resist waiting lol.

  • We opened up the travel system tonight. I love it. I'm planning on opening things as I get them.
  • I already have the base in my car. I just got the car seat this weekend and wanted to see how it fits. Just decided to leave the base in was such a pain getting it in to begin with. I'm going to wash all his clothes end of August and get the crib set up then as well. As far as other baby gear set it up as he gets bigger and needs it.
  • Maybe it's because I'm a FTM but we have everything set up: crib, amour, changing table... All clothes washed and hanging up .... We don't have everything though... Still need some clothes and stuff
  • I've set up everything pretty much as soon as I got it. I don't want to overstress myself by trying to do it all in the final month. Still don't have everything we need yet and I'm waiting to wash baby clothes. I get frustrated putting things together and I couldn't imagine trying to do more than one thing a week. I know there is always a risk, but I think it would be equally hard either way.
  • I have things like the crib and PNP set up, but other than that I'm leaving things in the box at least until after my baby shower. Like PP said, I'll probably start setting up in August.
  • Your post made me realize I have received two large gifts in the mail and just carried them upstairs box and all! I have alot of second hand stuff which are staged in a spare bedroom as we are just finishing up painting the baby room. My shower is in two weeks and after that I will start staging everything out in the baby room. I want to make sure its functional before the big day and that I am comfortable with where I have put everything.
  • I just started washing her clothes yesterday, we have been garage saling and I wanted to make sure I know what I have ☺. Not due until September 14.
  • @ehgmorse Just an FYI, not to be "mean"
But having any part of a car seat in your car too early is not the best thing to do. In the case you happen to have even a little fender bender, that would be an accident, and you would have to replace the car seat or base as it would be deemed as in an accident and no longer safe/legal to be in the car.
I didn't know that , but I do now and it's suggested to not install until a couple weeks before
  • @shelbydd are you putting stuff together or gonna wait? Just curious
  • @troopersmom I've kept most in boxes but I pulled the pack n play out so I could dispose of the box. I'm kind of wondering if that was the best decision but too late now, I guess lol
