2nd trimester rapid weight gain

So up until week 20 I had only gained 3 pounds. Now at nearly 25 weeks according to my home scale I've gained another 7 pounds!! I haven't changed my diet in any way and in fact have been doing a lot more walking. I do recall having one month of rapid gain with my son so I'm hoping that's what going on again. I have my doctor appt. tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to stepping on that scale especially since I'm overweight to begin with. Anyone else have a crazy gain month?

Re: 2nd trimester rapid weight gain

  • Definitely, I only gained 7 lbs in the first trimester and and at 23 weeks I've gained another 8 lbs. I can recall everything I eat and all of the exercise i get, but I'm still rapidly gaining. Even my husband was surprised because we have the same routine and eat the same things. I gained 1.5 lbs this weekend alone.  Bummer, but I guess baby is growing in there.

  • I've gained more in the past few weeks than I have my whole pregnancy thus far. I was actually nervous in the first trimester because I had barely gained any weight. Even though the doctor said it was fine I felt like there was something wrong. Apparently my body was just waiting for weeks 21-24. My belly has gotten a lot bigger and I have gained about 7 pounds. I have my doc. appt on Friday and I hope she doesn't think I am gaining weight too rapidly...I really haven't changed my diet or exercise too much. Even though I probably should be exercising more....

So basically, you're not alone! :)

Yup! By 19 weeks I'd gained a total of about 7 pounds. Then all the sudden I gained 3 pounds a week for the next 2 weeks, and then about a pound the next week. So I definitely had a huge growth spurt there! I'm hoping it settles back down! I haven't changed my eating habits and have actually been more active as well, so I can only assume baby had some major growing he wanted to do.
  • Same here! Up until 18 weeks I held steady at about 8 or 9 pounds gained. In the past 1-2 weeks I've gained 3-4. Out of nowhere. I hope this rate doesn't keep up the rest of my pregnancy. I was overweight pre-pregnancy, not obese by medical standards just overweight, so my goal has been to gain no more than 25 pounds. I'm officially at 13 pounds gained and I'm only 23 weeks. Yikes.
  • I was gaining about 2 lbs a month up until my last visit when I gained 10lbs in a month!!! My doctor said he wasn't concerned because he sees it a lot around this time because of the heat and your body retaining water. He told me just to watch my salt take. I was also on a cruise so I'm sure the amazing food didn't help! I've gained 20lbs so far and I told my self I didn't want to gain more than 30lbs, I don't think that's happening!
  • I started gained like mad too ... I'm up like 17 lbs and I'm 22 weeks ! I gained 10 first and then another 7 in the last month wtf ?
  • :-? Pregnant = weight gain
You don't always gain much in the first trimester. Second and third get ready for it to come on.
  • BrooklynBroussard said: @doe2813 I really think I gained most of my weight in water. When I started focusing on drinking more water, my weight shot up. I changed nothing else about my diet. @BrooklynBroussard, just a heads up. Drinking more water alone doesn't mean you'll gain water weight. We have a lot of situations going on at the same time, and our hormones are going to determine that for the most part. Sodium and carbohydrates actually encourage more water retention than other things. The more you maintain a normal water intake, the more your water retention will maintain the same. It's when we don't drink enough for awhile and then drink a lot that our body says, "Hey! If you're going to stop drinking this stuff again, I'm going to hold onto what you're giving me right now!!" I only mention this because I hope drinking more water doesn't deter anyone since it's such an important part of our intake :) I don't want people to think that negotiating their water intake will drastically impact their weight. Sodium and carbohydrate intake will do more of that than anything!

  • OP, I have months like that. I end up feeling really hungry more frequently some weeks more than others. I figure that as long as I am making healthful choices, baby is going to get what he needs! I wouldn't worry too much about it unless your doctor suggests making changes :)

  • I had gained less than 5 lbs up until week 16 Now week 18-21, my belly has gotten continually bigger and I have gained another 5 lbs. My husband even asked me if my belly would keep growing at such a fast rate & if so, wouldn't that mean I would be huge by the end (thanks honey!).
I just figure baby is growing and it is a belly grwoth spurt right now! So don't worry, you are not alone!
  • It is very comforting to know this spike in gain is pretty typical amongst the group right now. Thanks for the feedback ladies, this is why I love this outlet! :)
  • Yeah, I didn't gain any weight for the first 17 weeks. I actually lost weight due to morning sickness. At my appointment this past Wednesday, I found out that I've gained 8 pounds! I eat very well and exercise often, so I was shocked lol. I know you obviously gain quite a bit of weight while pregnant, but it's still really weird whenever it actually starts happening. My doctor was pleased though and told me that it's completely normal, and that I'm right on track, so that made me feel better. You're not alone!

  • @BrooklynBroussard yes! I keep telling myself that it's healthy, and normal. Of course I'm absolutely thrilled and excited to be blessed with a precious baby, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to getting my body back lol. I know it will never be the same as pre-baby, but I can sure work towards it. ;)

  • I've found this to be true in both my pregnancies. It seems like some points in the process just naturally gain quicker than others. If you're staying healthy, I wouldn't worry :)

  • I have a similar issue. I had lost about 1 pound up until 12 weeks and now at 20 I'm at 11 pounds gained (6 in the last four weeks). It seemed like a lot to me but my doctor assured me that it was normal and I'm right where I should be.
  • At my 20 week appointment, I'd gained 8 lbs. My doctor actually said I should only gain about 2 more lbs the next month, but no, I gained between 6 and 8!

I recently joined a gym and started working out, but other than that haven't changed anything. I do remember having a month with DS when I gained 10 lbs, though I think it was between 23 and 27 weeks and that was because I was eating more.

  • I too gained a little more these past few weeks.   My first trimester was awful with morning sickness galore so I lost weight. Now it's just random bouts of it. I am just so grateful to be able to eat without darting to hug the toilet. lol  I wouldn't be concerned unless your Dr mentioned something.  I am still struggling with my water intake.  It's still so unappealing to me .  I used to love water before pregnancy.  :(

    Lurking from N15...

This thread makes me feel so much better.  I still hadn't gained anything at my 16w appointment, but apparently my body is playing catch-up now and I gained 8 lbs between then and my 20w appointment today.
  • @BrooklynBroussard, I knew you were a smart woman ;) Thanks for the update, and I apologize if it came off as rude. I meant for it to just be a general statement of clarification! We have a couple kinesiology and nutrition/dietetics grads in our family, so this is common conversation at family gatherings :)

  • You ladies make me feel better. 23 weeks and went to a wedding yesterday where my uncle asked me if I was due in July. Really. I've only gained 14lbs total but I would say in the past month 6lbs happened real fast. I remember with my first pregnancy gaining about 8lbs
