Falling off the Wagon (caffeine)

I got a terrible caffeine headache this afternoon.  I told myself on Friday that I would quit cold turkey. I knew it would suck for a few days but totally worth it.  So much for willpower as I had a Dr. Pepper and it was wonderful.  Maybe weaning off the caffeine is a better idea? *cough cough*
New strategy: I'll start by having only one cup of tea in the morning for the next two days and I think that will work.
Anyone have a better strategy for cutting out the addictions?

Re: Falling off the Wagon (caffeine)

  • No advice but caffeine in moderation is okay. I have about one soda every other day. With my son, I had a coke every day the last 3.5 weeks. It just always sounded so good with my lunch.

  • I'm starting to do a blend of regular and decaf coffee. I'm starting out with 3/4th reg and 1/4 decaf, then in a couple weeks I'll go half and half. I only have one cup a day, so I'll probably stick with the half-caf mix.

I am a dr.pepper aholic. No joke. I haven't had one in about a week surprisingly. I usually get the WORST headaches. I just want to make sure everything's okay with baby and I'm sure I'll have one here and there. Moderation is key!
  • Thanks ladies! Some caffeine is okay, I know, but my first LO was born with epilepsy.  So I'm taking ALL precautions this time around and since caffeine affects the brain and nervous system I am kind of treating it as taboo.  Plus, all of us who are breastfeeding (me!)  will have to quit before baby is born anyway. No caffeinated newborns in this house! Sleep!!

  • No advice for quitting but 200mg is ok. I start every morning with a cup of beautiful delicious coffee. I think it's great you are cutting back but don't think you need to go overboard either:)

  • I'm still drinking caffeine and I've just limited how much I have each day. My practice says 300 mg, but during first tri, I like to stick to less than 100.

FWIW, I drank caffeine my whole pregnancy and the entire time I BFed. Because my child was exposed to it already in utero, having a cup of coffee or two each morning after she arrived had no effect on her.

I have two cups of regular coffee (not expresso) every morning. I drink that same amount while nursing too. Never had any adverse effects with babies sleeping.
