July 2015 Moms

So, it happened to me...

I got a hemorrhoid!  And I have honestly never been so uncomfortable, ever!  Talk about pain!

(I am a FTM and will be 35 weeks in one day.)

It started on Friday afternoon while I was still at work and by the time 7 p.m. rolled around, the pain was so bad that I could barely walk.  I have been using Preparation H cream since Friday evening, but I can honestly say that it has not "shrunk" in size and the pain and discomfort has only subsided very minimally.  The only way that i am completely comfortable is when I am laying in bed on my back (not completely flat on my back) with my head and feet/legs propped up.  And the fact that I have to pee at least once an hour really doesn't make for any extended period of comfort at all!

Can anyone please tell me how long before I get any bit of relief?  I am using the Prep H religiously every 4 hours as directed and have been since Friday evening. I am also keeping the area as clean as possible by taking a warm shower both in the morning and in the evening. I have also taken Tylenol a couple of times hoping that I could get some relief that way too.

I guess I really just need to know if there is any relief in my near future.  I am so extremely busy at work (mostly because I am trying to get everything wrapped up before my maternity leave begins on July 1st) and I really, really can't take a day off of work right now.  But all I can think about is how terrible and miserable I am going to be at work on Monday if I am still as in this much pain.

I have never had a hemorrhoid before and I never, ever knew that they were this painful and uncomfortable!  Any advice as to how long I am going to feel like this and/or any advice on how to get some sort of relief would be greatly appreciated!

Re: So, it happened to me...

  • Drink a lot of water and even some prune juice to make it easier on your body when it's time to poo. Try not to force your poops. I had hemorrhoids early on, in late first trimester, but they've gone away since I've made sure to drink a ton of water. Also make sure you're getting a lot of fiber in your diet. Mine never hurt that bad, only when I was pooping, and for a little bit afterwards

  • See your doctor. If it's thrombosed (clotted) it may have to be surgically removed. Hurts like hell when they numb the area but after the pain will be gone.
Since it's the weekend... Take warm baths, drink lots of water and buy RectiCare. (I'm starting to feel like I'm sponsored by this product since I've recommended it so much) you will find it at walgreens.
    Hope you feel better
  • Def let the Dr check it at your next visit, as pp said it may have to be removed. I used the wipes after every bathroom trip (pee or poo) and the gel as directed. It took about 7-10 days for it to completely go down. It is miserable, hang in there.

  • I got them too and they suck. Prep h did nothing for me at all. I got this prescription from the doc for this stuff called proctofoam and it has worked wonders. The pain was gone in a few days and its starting to shrink. Maybe ask your doc.

    Recticare. Worth the $30.

A lot of people assume it is a constipation issue. It can be. I have yet to be constipated though and have dealt with this since 2nd trimester. The pressure being put on your pelvic floor can cause it, also. I'm saying this so that you don't get frustrated when you still have them after you fix constipation issue.

My understanding is that they usually go away shortly after labor. But first... Labor makes it worse temporarily

  • Mine are never as painful as you're describing but this far into pregnancy they don't really go away. There's a lot of things pushing down there and it's going to get worse before it gets better.
  • Avoid cheese, eat prunes.. (About 2 or 3 a day.. But don't eat to many because you don't want to get the runs) do not wipe with toilet paper. Use tucks pads only to wipe. You can also soak your bottom in salt water. And don't push or strain to go poop.
Now I suggest, only using prep h at night, use the internal one, that's what it sounds like to me.. You may have swelling in the outside, but if it's not helping, it's probably internal. Anyways, use that at night.. It's the same exact prep h, but has a little nozel.. Really not comfy using it and feels gross.. Thus why use it at night, in the am, wipe clean with tucks pad, and then fold one in half and wear it between your cheeks.. Just leave it there.. Again not comfy.. But which is worse, wear a panty liner so you don't get your pants wet, and change the tucks pad everytime you use the bathroom.

(Been dealing with mass amounts of internal hemeroids since my first daughter..)
  • I've dealt with hemorrhoid issues for a couple years, ugh. It will have a slight burn at first, but the only thing I've found that shrinks them right up in as little as 2 days is twice a day using a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar! It really does make them feel/look/heal up sooooo much better than anything I had tried before! And if they're flared, every single time I go to the bathroom I use a Prep-H wipe on them after.
  • I've found the Tucks pads (or the generic version is fine too) worked great. I haven't had any in a few months now and they werent as painful as you describe but I used them with every bathroom trip and it definitely helped with the discomfort.

I would mention to doc since in my experience, it's not quite as painful as you are describing.
  • @zmombie my thoughts exactly. Tucks are the way to go.

I also am sure to keep the area back there dry (when there isn't a tucks pad tucked in the cheeks) I noticed even if you don't have tucks available, a piece of toilet tissue folded helps temporarily. Definitely helps with the irritation and itching.

    Side note, maybe TMI:
I'm 37 weeks and since week 35 sex has really made my hemorrhoids worse. Only for a day or two but that extra action and pressure definitely causes some flare ups.
  • This was me over the weekend too!  Worst pain I have ever had - I couldn't walk, sleep, sit, anything.  Ugh - I'm so sorry for anyone who is dealing with this.  I never knew it could be so bad.  That being said, today I'm feeling a little better!

Here's what has helped for me:
    • I have been constantly using Tucks pads - put them in the fridge and use them every time you go to the bathroom
    • preparation H suppositories - seriously, i think this is what is finally making a difference - i did it 3 times yesterday and once so far today.  I'll  do another one at bedtime tonight.
    • preparation H ointment - i had the cream which didn't seem to do anything.  the ointment has been working well for me and I also put this in the fridge
    • cold water bath - actually i just put a couple inches of cold water in the tub and sit in it for as long as I can - maybe 5-10 minutes, several times a day
    • eating a ton of fiber
    • taking colace, which was recommended by my doctor.

Mine isn't gone yet, but it is SOOOOOO much better than it was even yesterday morning.  I'm hoping the pain goes away completely in the next couple of days.

I'm going to try the apple cider vinegar too!  Hope you all feel better soon!
