Breast Shells?

Anyone using breast shells? Have you found them helpful? Any particular brand work better than others?

I am a FTM and my boobs are hurting so bad from breastfeeding. DS seems to have a good latch but I find the initial 30 seconds and last 30 seconds so painful when he latches and unlatches. It's causing me to dread breastfeeding even though I know it's fine after he's initially latched.

Any ideas of when this pain will go away? DS is 3 weeks and 3 days.

I use a shield because my daughter can't latch onto my nipple. I've had no issues with them besides that if she pulls her head off while sucking, you get a lap full of milk. I use Medela and there are two sizes. I have both and she doesn't seem to mind either. They do help with soreness but be careful, I've heard some babies are hard to ween from the shield back to bare breast.

  • Sorry just to clarify - I'm wanting to know about breast shells not breast shields. I do have a shield to use if needed although I'm trying not to. I've heard shells are worn when NOT feeding to help prevent your nipples from rubbing against clothes and to give them air to heal.
  • Your pain should be going away very soon. Hang in there! I have the shells and they are nice to give your nipples a break from touching anything! Get some!

  • You should check if your baby is tongue tied. I also felt a lot of pain and my baby was diagnosed with lip and tongue tie. She just had the tie(s) removed by laser and breast feeding is much easier. A lot of nurses and doctors don't check for tongue tie but it's a common problem with an easy solution.
  • I use medela hydrogel pads between feedings. My nurse said you put them in fridge and can be used for about 2 weeks (even though package says 24 hours). The only thing is you have to wipe off your breast before feeding to clean it. Very refreshing when I have sore nipples!
  • I used the Medela shells in combination with the Jack Newman cream to heal my cracked nipples. They were recommended to me by a friend who swore by them. I loved them as well.
  • Thanks everyone!

I asked our paediatrician about tongue tie because the lactation consultant at the hospital mentioned it. Our paediatrician said it looks fine and she wouldn't want to do anything. His latch seems pretty good it's just the initial pull that seems to be irritating me. That and I think my nursing pads are bothering my nipples as well. Not sure if there is another brand I can try. I'm currently using Johnson & Johnson. If the pain hasn't gone away by our next paediatrician appointment I will definitely ask again about the tongue tie.

In the meantime I think I will find some breast shells to try!
