  • I'm terrified of Craigslist after the crazy incident here in CO! But those are awesome finds!!
  • I take my hubs sometimes lol

  • @AudriannaMaria was that the lady who stabbed the pregnant lady to steal her unborn baby?!? So scary! Meet somewhere public and bring someone else with you when you craigslist buy! :)
  • There's actually a new campaign in our city where the police have encouraged people to use the lobby of the police station to do exchanges, to increase safety. DH and I usually meet people at a coffee shop.

  • I love craigslist but yes I always take someone with me!! Offer Up is a cool app just like craigslist too...I got an awesome lazy boy for $30 and saved hundreds because this lady's husband had an affair and she was selling all his crap after divorcing him. Did I feel bad buying it? Slightly, but I also felt bad for the poor lady!!!
  • I wish I were living in the same place as I will be when baby comes :(:(

I don't want to have to deal with finding the space for baby stuff in our current apt, as well as moving it all later.. But I would love to go ahead and starting getting stuff ready

Our city PD has a designated spot at the station.
  • I wish the deals here were so good! Seems like everything is overpriced or car seats, which you shouldn't buy used.... Boo!

Look for local Mom to Mom groups too (a lot are on facebook). I've found some awesome deals just through that! I recently got a Baby Bjorn, play mat with hanging soft toys, Bumbo-style seat with tray and a beautiful wooden rocking chair for the nursery and the most expensive item was $20 :)
Next up: to find a dresser that I can double as a changing table...

  • Craigslist scares the crap out of me and I'd only meet someone to buy something if DH and one of his many guns was with me!!!
Just as a funny aside, my DH bought an AR (assault rifle) lower from a guy on Craigslist a few Halloweens ago and the guy he bought it from gave him a fake name and would only meet us at a Starbucks (perfectly cool with us!) it was at night and the seller was sitting outside at a table and had the part for the AR on his lap but no one noticed. My DH and the seller exchanged the money and the gun part and just as my DH was walking away with it to his truck this guy was heading into Starbucks, saw the gun part and obviously thought it was a full functioning gun and sprinted into the Starbucks as if he was being chased by a pack of hungry wolves and ducked under a table! We felt so bad!!!!
  • I LOVE Craigslist but you're right, it can be unsafe if you're not smart about it. Always meet in a public place (never at your or someone else's home), always during the day (not in the dark), and take someone with you when possible. Don't bring a ton of cash or other things with you, just what you need for the transaction, always have your phone ready and available, etc.

But if you follow smart and safe guidelines, you can find some really terrific stuff!
  • Um yea sending hubby not me. I like my fetus where it is thank you ;)

So this is an inside joke of sorts when I had my daughter my friend and I were both pregnant and they were doing this big local story on this girl who just turned 18 and she was cut from her mothers belly with a car key. Ok so that part isn't funny but keeping our fetuses where they belonged became out mantra when we went to the scary Walmart, or out someplace weird or to the mall and the old ladies mobbed us.

  • That's a great idea. I haven't thought about looking in Craigslist for baby stuff! My DH uses it all the time for our vacation rentals. He always finds the best deals.
  • So there's an awesome app called SafeTrek and if you let go of the button and dont press a code by 10 seconds it automatically calls the police and starts recording. You have to have your location on for it to work and they can track you. I used this while walking out of work to my car, or for any sketchy scene. I think it would be great for you ladies looking to meet with strangers! But yes I love free and gently used baby items. I'll bleach the shit out of them. No shame.

Seriously! Also it may just be me but used baby clothes seem like the cleanest used clothes in the world .i mean index wash used clothes, but how nasty can a newborn baby be? Well I guess it can have s major accident or something but then I wouldn't buy that outfit lol

I use craigslist all the time. Selling & buying. I've also sublet my apartment that way & never had a bad experience, knock wood. I hadn't thought about it for baby stuff yet, but I suppose I should start now! I've been a little cautious to start buying anything b/c I had a miscarriage once & so am just waiting until things get farther along to feel like I can really start getting excited. I figure most things can be picked up in the last few months, but craigslist can take time when you're looking for stuff. Thanks for the reminder! And, while I was always careful before, I'll be extra special careful now that I heard that story! Before I was just worried about rapists, now there's crazy women too!
  • Smart idea in theory. In practice, as many have said, exercise extreme caution.

Living in NYC I have deep fear of bed bugs and I'm surprised in a thread about Craigslist used items no one has brought up bed bugs. I recognize that this is not a major problem in all cities, but it certainly is here. Clothing- sure- because that's easy to take care of (hot setting for washer, high dryer temp), but furniture.... Too scary for my blood. (Shivers in fear).

Yeah areas are really different, I primarily shopped in very expensive privileged suburban areas in San Diego. I would be shocked to come home with bed bugs. All the same everything is getting super cleaned before entering my home. It's all in the garage for now ... Like a quarantine lol

JUST A HEADS UP (I am actually shouting because I am super passionate about this) bed bugs can be found in any home regardless of how clean you are. Unlike a lot of city vermin (roaches, flies) these bugs have nothing to do with how clean or not clean a home is. This has little to do with the thread, but I wanted to clear that up because this is why they spread so easily- lack of awareness. In fact, it is not uncommon for more well to do areas to have infestations because of residents frequent air and train travel, either business or pleasure. Again, this is not me slamming anyone I just really wanted to say that!
  • My husband is an exterminator and has put his foot down about anything like boppys, or anything padded due to bed bugs.... And he can attest some super clean homes can be infested!
  • Let's not forget hotel rooms, eek! SIL gave me a lesson on inspecting sheets when we traveled together. Sure enough there was some kind of bug(not sure if it was a bed bug or just normal bug) in the bed. Also never leave your luggage on the floor! So icky.

Sorry this was off topic lol.
