Antibiotic in Early Pregnancy/Quad Screen Positive for Spina Bifida

Hi Ladies-

I'm in a panic about the results of my Quad Screen.  It came back positive for spina bifida (1 in 188 chance with an AFP of 2.0). The clinic said this AFP is "borderline" so they want to look at the spine more closely during my anatomy scan in a couple of weeks.  I was handling everything okay, because I realize this is just a statistical representation and does not mean my baby actually has spina bifida, but then I remembered I took Amoxicillin at the beginning of my 6th week of pregnancy (my 4th week after conception).  I looked it up and this is the week the neural tube is closing! It feels like too much of a coincidence and I'm a wreck.  I know Amoxicillin is supposed to be safe and my doctor said it was safe but I'm still worried due to the timing.  Can anyone offer any reassurance? Especially if you took an antibiotic in early pregnancy.

    Your quad screen is not "positive." Screens are not yes/no. Also, correlation does not mean causation.

    I was in the same situation, and so far so good, no Spina bifida seen on the sono. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy!

    This. I had to take amoxicillin at 12 weeks and then again at 26...it is safe during pregnancy and would not have caused this. Relax...a 1 in 188 chance of having spina bifida means that you have a 187 in 188 chance of not having it.

    There is no correlation between taking amoxicillin during early pregnancy and the instance of spina bifida. It is widely considered to be safe during pregnancy, and your doctor would not have prescribed it to you otherwise. The main thing that scientists believe lead to spina bifida is a deficiency in folic acid during early pregnancy, which is why they stress taking your prenantal as soon as you know you're pregnant.

    Also, like PP said, the screen just means there is a 1 in 188 chance that your baby has it. That's less than 0.005%. Keep your thoughts positive and don't stress over things that are outside of your control. And even if your baby does have spina bifida, there are varying degrees of severity of it, many of which are very treatable.
