ER for baby

I gave my baby gripe water for gassiness and she choked on it and started to spit up and have trouble breathing. She started to get really raspy and was having a hard time catching her breath. I was terrified and my husband was more relaxed about it but we rushed her to the ER to make sure she didn't have fluid in her lungs. As a FTM its so hard to not overreact to everything. She's doing fine now and we are home now better safe than sorry right?

Hubby is all freaking out over the ER bill but all I could think about was getting her safe

Re: ER for baby

  • How did you give it? I always mix it into the bottle.

How long was she "choking" for? I probably would have given it a little bit of time, but then again, I may not have when I was actually in that situation. Its tough being a FTM

  • I did the same thing a couple days after getting home from the hospital. I cried the whole time too cause of all the germs I was exposing my baby too. They monitored his breathing and Said it was at 100%. Kinda felt foolish but me and my father and aunt had seen him having trouble breathing. I felt a lot better after knowing he was ok. Haven't gotten the bills yet, but whatever.. It's just money, better to have piece of mind that your baby is ok
  • I was told not to mix it with the bottle. She was struggling with breathing for an hour before I finally took her in.
  • Poor baby! Glad she's ok! I'm with you guys... bills may be stressful but money is replacable... our babies are not. So much better to be safe than sorry.

Since I spend the majority of the time alone with LO, I've learned about her coughing while eating, and that sometimes her breathing is erratic for no reason... but it makes me feel good that when others experience it (even DH), they get concerned. What I DON'T appreciate is how often my mother in law screams "SHE'S NOT BREATHING!" when she is definitely breathing. Stop giving me heart attacks woman!!!

Who told you that? On the bottle I have, it specifically says you can mix it in it give it separately.

My pediatrician also told me not to mix in a bottle in case he doesn't finish it.
  • My pediatrician said that too
  • I give my 2 wk old a little at a time and I wait until after each mouthful is swallowed. I'm glad your baby is ok! I've read that some babies are allergic to the dill and/or ginger in the gripe water, so I would have done the same thing you did! <3
  • Wow, I had no idea. She never mentioned that to me but my LO drinks 3 oz consistently at every feeding so I don't worry about that too much.
  • You do what you have to do! Wouldn't it just be a copayment? Ours is $100, but that's worth peace of mind with breathing issues.

  • My LO seems to get "raspy" sounding breathing after I give her gripe water too. I only give her half of the dose and she stops crying and usually falls asleep minutes after I give it to her, so it must be doing the trick... The raspy breathing does make me nervous though, it sounds like she has something in her lungs. I always watch her closely after! Better safe than sorry.
