FTM Freaked out by the projectile vomit

I know that babies throw up, but seeing my 2 week old projectile vomit EVERYTHING out of his nose and mouth last night and a few minutes ago really scares me. Am I feeding him too much? Is  it because I can't always get him to burp? Is something wrong with the way I'm storing my milk in the refrigerator? How can I have the confidence to put him to sleep on his back with the fear he is going to drown in his own bile?? I've googled it all and it's not making me feel better. I need expirience stories! And I've checked his temp, and that's normal.

Go to the doc or ER. Pyloric stenosis can involve projectile vomiting and is very serious!

  • My baby is 4 weeks today and has now projectiled five times since she was 2 weeks old. I went to the doctor and everything was fine. As long as your baby seems comfortable afterwards then there is nothing to worry about. My doctor told me it was most likely from over feeding.
  • We've been struggling with this too. If it is after EVERY feed you need to see a Dr ASAP. If it is occasional it's likely some reflux. Burping DD makes a huge difference for us. We burp about 3-4 times in a feed. However it still happens. Its scary and sucks.

I had the same exact thing happen last night and this morning. It scared the crap out of me and I got so upset both times but DD didn't even seem phased!! Just kind of looked at me like 'now what?'. I called the doctor who said he wasn't concerned since it has only happened a couple of times and it's most likely over feeding. He suggested burping her every 5 minutes through feedings. My new routine is to feed on Side A for 5 minutes, burp her, Side A again for another 5 minutes, burp, then offer Side B and pay attention to her cues to see if she is full or just sucking to suck then burp her again and keep her upright for a while before laying her back down. It just stinks bc I am completely on edge the entire time I am feeding her in hopes it doesn't happen again.

Mine did it a couple of times and actually stopped breathing for a couple seconds.

Turns out she has acid reflux. I stopped breast feeding and switched to enfamil AR and it really helped. No more projectile thankfully!
  • Go talk to your doc definitely, but my first baby did this OFTEN until about 4 months of age. It was just how he was...it was worse with breast milk, and a lot better with similac sensative...but he still projectile vomited at least a little every time.
  • Mine actually ended up having pyloric stenosis, which can be very serious if left untreated. He projectile vomited after EVERY feeding, not just occasionally. We luckily never had any choking issues - it was quite forceful and would come out one way or another. My other twin has occasional projectile vomits too but hers has been diagnosed (for now) as reflux. But she also has high potassium levels and kidney issues so we aren't sure if the vomiting is related to that or a separate issue. I would keep an eye on it & if it ends up happening most feedings, see your doc. Every feeding = go to the ER. Keep an eye out for dry diapers too. That is a sign of dehydration and very serious.
