why hasnt my doc checked?

So i went to my 36 week appointment and my doctor hasnt checked or looked at my cervix? I see a lot of you ladies saying how many cm you are dilated. . I dont understand why my doctor hasnt checked. 3 days earlier after me and DH had sex I bled a lot of red blood then got very severe back cramps (I thought I was about to go into labor) I would think that would be a reason to check? All he said was I lost my mucus plug and that if I have sex I will probably bleed and have contractions again. So I asked his nurse when he starts doing cervix checks and she said not until 38 or 39 weeks!? Anyone else have a doctor that waits this long?

Re: why hasnt my doc checked?

  • Yes. My Dr won't start until 38 weeks. It is driving me insane.

Some drs don't do it at all. It is no big deal. If my dr offers I am declining. There is no reason to have it done other than making the waiting worse.

  • Can you ask him to check? I don't see what the harm would be if it would put your mind at rest. After all, you're paying him.

Be happy they haven't you are better off. The checks are not a good indicator of when labor will start. Also you can have bacteria introduced and pushed up from the checks. Maybe they are waiting for the results of your group b strep culture first? Anyhow I'm declining all checks until I'm in labor and even then only to be admitted and when I'm ready to push.
  • My doctor doesn't start checking until my 38 week appointment because of the risk of introducing new bacteria through unnecessary tests. I've declined all checks until I'm in labor because I've had so many infections down there, so the risk isn't worth it for me. Like PP said, it's not really a good indicator of when labor will start.

  • My next appointment I'll nearly be 38weeks (37+5) and will be my first check.

Once again, I agree with @gotdiesel2007. (I'm seeing a trend here!)

I've had friends go in and find out they're 3 or 4cm and get all excited... only to not have a baby for 2 or 3 more weeks. I kind of find cervical checks pointless, and will be declining as well.

  • Just discussed this at my appt yesterday. OB said they will do GBS and dilation check at my next appt (36 weeks). I asked why check as I'm concerned about infection. She gave a few reasons: it's good to get a baseline in the event that I start having issues and go to get checked they'll have something to compare it to ( ie. was 0 at appt then started having contractions/pain and am now 2 in L&D) and also they can make sure LO is head down. She still said I can decline and she'll just do a sonogram to make sure LO is head down.

I'll be opting to pass. I had a dilation check at 30 weeks when I was having crazy pain and contractions to rule out pre term labor and it was pretty uncomfortable since my cervix was still long and closed.

  • Was in L&D over the weekend and had enough swabs and checking done to last a lifetime. I nearly threw up and passed out due to my cervix being irritated so I will be declining any more checks until I am in the hospital again.
    I'm currently 34 weeks.
  • There's no point to cervical checks, so I'd say your dr is doing the right thing.
  • My doctor starts checking at 37 weeks which is next week for me.

Don't worry about it! The check is uncomfortable and when you are in labor is when u should be checked!
  • I had an appointment yesterday at 34+4. She did a check only because baby is still breech and she just wanted to make sure everything was ok an that waiting another 2 weeks for my next appointent was appropriate. It is pretty uncomfortable, but I don't think it is painful.
  • I agree with everyone saying they are pointless. However some doctors won't schedule induction until the cervix starts thinning naturally. So maybe week 38 or 39 is worth it to do. They can strip the membranes beforehand too but still they wait until 38 or 39. I started having the checks at 35 weeks however I had lots of cramping and just wanted to know what my body was doing. After my last check, I really am just like whatever- what's the point.
