Thoughts on toddler at ultrasound?

Normally I'll make my doctor appointments on days that my 18 month old is at daycare, but the only day that I could get in for my first ultrasound is the day that she stays home with me. I'm going to check to see if our babysitter or family can watch her, but if not do you think it would be completely inappropriate for her to tag along with DH there to help entertain her? Obviously it's not ideal but just trying go figure out whether or not it's an acceptable option. Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated!

  • If your office will allow it, mine will not allow children for any reason.

  • Yeah. Definitely check with the office. My office allows kids. I think bringing the kiddo should be fine (especially with husband watching her). Unless your kiddo likes to run around and get into everything? ;)

  • I didn't have a choice with my second pregnancy. We had moved and did not know anyone or have family nearby. I brought my 1 year old to every appt and kept her in a stroller. I just made the best of it. She hated hearing the heartbeat and if I couldn't hold her hand she screamed, but oh well. I made it through the whole pregnancy!
  • I brought my son to a lot of my appointments last time, however I was advised not to bring him to the first visit since it is much longer and detailed- I also don't think I was allowed to bring him to u/s appointments. If hubby's there it'd probably be ok, but of all the appointments that's one I really wouldn't want a toddler tag a long
  • I had no choice during my last pregnancy. My husband was there for the first problem appointment and ultrasound but I had to take her with me for the following 3 problem appointments and ultrasounds by my self. I packed a bag just for her, made sure it had some good toys and books, good snacks, and my tablet or phone for movies. She did fine in every ultrasound but the hour wait for the actual dr was rough.

I agree that you should check with your office. Mine allows children. I'm a SAHM with no family super close(other than older grandparents), so DS will be coming with me to all of my appointments. DH is coming to the first one and the 20 week one to help since they're a lot longer. Otherwise I'm strapping him in his stroller with some toys and snacks :)

  • We took DS with us yesterday for the ultrasound, he really liked it! DH pointed out different things to him and he did really well. But DH did take him home afterwards, which was good, because it took 30 minutes to get into the exam room and then another 15 to see the midwife... she had gotten backed up and it was only 9:30!!!

  • We took my son when he was 18 months with to my scan for my last pregancy. He cried the entire time! He thought the doctor was hurting me. It wasn't very pleasant for him. And I def won't be doing it again anytime soon. Felt sorry for my hubby who couldn't enjoy the whole scan.

If u can find a baby sitter I would advise it. But that being said, my eldest son is a sensitive soul, so may not be like that with your little one

We plan on bringing my son to most of the appointments, except for the first appointment - we haven't told him yet bc he would tell everyone!

I would bring her, as long as your office allows it. Maybe bring her in the stroller so she can't get into everything?

  • Yes but bring something to entertain her. With my second I had to bring DS to every appt. some were close to 3 hours with dr appt, ultrasounds and NST. The office didn't mind and neither did I. But my son was very well behaved, I'm alittle worried about what I'm going to do this time with the two of them.

  • I think it's fine. My OB's office has toys for kids, but if yours doesn't them bring a tablet or book or your phone for distraction. Ultrasounds are super fast anyway. I really don't understand a no child policy at an OB's office.

  • My daughter is 3 and CANNOT WAIT until we get to go to our 1st u/s. She asks me every day to see online videos of the baby in utero (fascinated with the cord and what it does; in fact, can tell you what's happening in the "conception" part of the film in very age-appropriate terms) ... I am so thrilled, elated, excited to share every part of this pregnancy that I can with her.
She's quite mature and very well-behaved and articulated, though. I have zero concern about bringing her anywhere with me when it comes to considering her behaviour.
  • There are no rules about toddlers not being at ultrasound appointments. It is more like staff doesn't want to deal with it. I would be worried going to an OB that doesn't understand it. Care should be family focused and what is best for your family not the provider. I am a pediatric NP and see 3 siblings at a time...not ideal but it is what is best for the family. You should be fine having her there. I took my 2 year old to the first ultrasound as well. It was fine. No big deal.
  • I brought my 15mo son with me... he didn't want to sit still and played on the floor the entire time. Hubby couldn't really enjoy the moment because he was chasing after him. I think it depends on the time your appointment is scheduled (ex: hopefully not nap time) and I would suggest bringing things to entertain her. This time I'm having my mom watch the kids while dh and I go together.
