I'm a FTM and plan on breastfeeding and pumping as well. My insurance offers several options for pumps that are fully covered and then a handful of upgrades that would cost between $90-130. Any feedback or recommendations on which pumps would be a good choice would be appreciated!

-Ameda Purely Yours
-ARDO Calypso Essentials Pump
-Freemie Freedom Deluxe Set
-Hygeia Q Double Electric Pumnp
-Medela Pump In Style Advanced Starter Kit

-Spectra 9 Plus Advanced Breast Pump

Upgrade Options
-Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump w/ Carryall
-Medela Pump In Style Advanced w/ Backpack
-Medela Pump In Style Advanced on-the-go Tote
-Medela Pump In Style Advanced with the Metro Bag

Thanks!

Re: FTM need help with Pump options through Insurance- Recommendations for which one, pros and cons

  • I had the ameda purely yours & medela pis with my first. I didn't get anything when I used the ameda. I'm not sure why I couldn't get any milk out. I used the medela pis to exclusively pump for 9.5 months because of latch issues. My supply stopped suddenly at 9.5 months & I didn't know why. I got a recall notice 2 weeks later - which didn't help much.
This te insurance paid for another medela pis. They are supposed to be used for 1 child only b/c mold can get back in the tubing - it's an open system. I wanted a Spectra but my insurance doesn't cover it. My friend has the spectra & medela pump in style & says she gets a lot more with the spectra. But it is big & not something to travel with. It is a closed system & so could be used for more than 1 child. Hope that helps!
