Let's talk prenatal vitamins.

Before I got pregnant I was taking the Target brand with the DHA (2 pills). I took those for a solid 3 months while TTC. Around May I switched to a prescription from my OB for Prenatal Plus (1 horse sized pill) honestly because the 3 month supply was only $12 as opposed to the $8/m I was spending on the Target kind. What does everyone else take? Ps - I have to take them before I got to sleep or I feel horrible all day.

Re: Let's talk prenatal vitamins.

  • I'm taking Baby & Me bc they are whole food based, but you have to take 4 a day, which is annoying. They are gentle on my super sensitive stomach though.

  • I take Vitafusion gummies (similar to Target) and have no stomach issues.
  • I'm takingNature Made Prenatal with DHA. I've always taken them at night with dinner and have never had issues. They are a big pill though.

  • I'm also taking nature made multi+dha. I've noticed that as long as i take it with food, I'm ok. Otherwise no bueno.

I got some samples from my 1st dr visit but was told what I'm taking is good and no need to change unless it doesn't agree with my body. I may try the samples but intend to stay with my costco sized bottle i got while ttc!

I take the Kroger Brand Gummies with DHA. Similar to vita fusion. No problems & I think they taste decent.
  • I'm taking One A Day Prenatal right now because that's what I had left over from when I was nursing DS3. I'll probably ask for a prescription at my 1st appt. I don't think prescription is any better than over the counter, just cheaper with insurance.

I have always taken my vitamins after dinner or just before bed. If I take them at any other time I get sick.
  • I'm taking nature made and the constipation is annoying. I do drink lots of water and veggies, plus fibre rich cereal and that helps a teeny weeny bit. I would like to change but I don't know..... Also I take mine at 1pm after lunch so I have energy for the rest of the day.

I take the target brand gummies. The ones you swallow make me puke.

Another Nature Made user. I get them at Costco, so one bottle will last me most of my pregnancy. ($18 for a 180 day supply)

  • I was taking the gummies but they were amazing.. no nausea at all. I had to switch to centrum prenatal though because i needed the iron. I am very anemic so unfortuntaley the gummies don't have any iron... oh well.. 2 days of it though and it hasn't bothered my stomach so that's good.
  • I am taking Natures Made with DHA.

I have a question and wanted to see if anyone had specific experience. I take a daily supplement of vitamin d (2000 IU). That's before I was pregnant as well. Everything I've read says vitamin d is very important and can help greatly reduce pregnancy complications. My question is am I taking enough? I saw one article that said pregnant women should get 4000-6000 IU. (My prenatal has 400 IU).

You typically get it through sunlight and food as well. I'd discuss it with your doc first :)

  • I'm lurking (hi!) but I wanted to give you guys some insight. Those taking the gummies, no harm in taking them now but in your second tri, you should try to switch to one with iron so you don't become anemic. I'm taking the One a Day (which has lots of iron) and I still became anemic in the second tri, so I'm now taking an additional iron and vitamin c supplement. Also, don't take extra vitamin D unless your doctor has approved it. I took 4000 IU in addition to my prenatal because they noticed I was very low in my first appointment bloodwork. I only took 4000 IU for 4 weeks, then 2000 IU for 4 weeks, then they told me to stop. Too much of a good thing can actually be a bad thing during pregnancy.

Adding that the paperwork for my midwives say I should be taking a prenatal with folic acid and DHA and D3 (1000IU) daily.

  • My midwife has me taking 5000 UI of Vitamin D.
  • I guess I should have added that at my yearly physical/check up two years ago, my blood work showed a vitamin d deficiency so I've been taking the supplement recommended by PCP since then. My first appointment isn't until the 25th so I'll guess I'll call and inquire if I should keep that up until then or stop.

    Thanks ladies!

This is what I'm taking too -i'm taking the softgels over the tablets
  • I take Rainbow Light Prenatal One, Rainbow Light DHA, and 2000 IU of Vitamin D - all just one pill once a day. I really like the Rainbow Light brand because the prenatal has some digestive aids in it to help the vitamins (and iron) digest more easily. It also has ginger to help with nausea. The Rainbow Light DHA has a hint of orange oil so there is no worry of a weird after taste. And finally, my pre-conception consultation doc said that 2000 IU of D is plenty (and that's for us here in Washington where we tend to be woefully deficient in Vitamin D).
  • @candace4erich - I'm in WA too! Where are you?

  • I'm taking the prenatal gummies with DHA but they don't have iron, so I will need to switch soon.  I tend to take prenatals with an added stool softener when I am pregnant because I have a lot of issues with severe constipation in the first tri.

  • I also take Nature Made and like them a lot.

In regards to iron, its really more of a concern if you are vegetarian or have some other issues absorbing iron. If you eat meat regularly you are probably getting enough iron.

Not true for me, at least. I eat a ton of meat and green veggies and don't get enough. When the docs do a blood draw, they should be able to tell you.

  • I'm taking Nature's Bounty prenatal as well as a D3 supplement and iron. I'm vitamin D deficient and anemic.

That definitely can be true in the first tri, but changes as your blood volume increases later in your pregnancy. I actually had a really high iron level at my first prenatal appointment. When your blood volume nearly doubles in the second tri, your iron stores aren't enough to compensate for that. By the time I had my glucose test done at 25 weeks and they checked my iron level again, I was anemic. I eat meat more than once a day and take a prenatal with iron and eat lots of spinach and other greens, but its still very common for pregnant women to develop anemia later on in pregnancy once their blood volume increases.
  • I was anemic last pregnancy, so I definitely need iron.

I took nature made with my daughter and was terribly constipated my entire pregnancy. I'm taking rainbow bright prenatals this time and I love them! I wish I'd known about them last time.
  • I was taking nature made with dha, but they were making me sick. I got a free sample of First response gummies and they are yummy and I enjoy taking them. because along with the prenatal I have to take folic acid and aspirin. The less I have to swallow the better, lol
