*Edited to be less specific..pregnancy paranoia*
i have just phoned in sick for work and hate how it is deemed sick as I am not sick, I am pregnant.
i have been in a lot of days to nightshifts without days off between on 12 hour shifts and my pelvis hurts from standing on my feet all day as does my back.
i just want to rest my poor body before i do damage :(..but i hate how it has to be "sick" leave.
anybody think this is unreasonable? I have physio next week for my pelvis.
also what is everyone else sickness record like and what reasons have you been off for?

Re: Guilty for being off.

  • I haven't taken any time off during this pregnancy. We don't have sick time here so if we're gone due to being sick, we either take it unpaid or have to use vacation. I've only been at this job for just over two years and our vacation accrual policy SUCKS so I barely have any vacation accrued and I'm trying to save what I do have for when I'm on maternity leave since that will be unpaid. However, I have a desk job M-F and have nights/weekends off so my job isn't physically demanding like yours is. I can see why you want a day off to just give your body a break! Since you're further along in your pregnancy and are expected to still be on your feet for 12 hour shifts, do you think your doctor could write you some restrictions to help you out at all? Like maybe giving you more breaks throughout the day to get off your feet or shorten your shifts so it's not so hard on your body?

  • I got hit right in the belly for the second time this school year with no repercussions for the kid that hit me, so I'm out for the rest of the school year that the kids are in. I have to use sick time, too. However, I've made peace with the fact that if I don't do this for her, no one else will.
  • I think most jobs have sick leave and personal leave.  You are taking time off because your body needs to rest which would fall under sick leave.  It makes sense to me that you would be taking a sick day.  I've never heard of any jobs having days off for being pregnant.

  • missrachelMrsO - I had that happen to me once from a student (not intentionally malicious, just a kick happened) and it definitely freaks you out, even when there is not bad intent behind it! Good for you for staying safe!

  • Don't feel guilty. You're listening to your body and doing what's best for you and your unborn child. There's nothing about that to feel guilty about! Take the time you need, even if that means leaving work before you have the baby(if you can manage it), that's OK too! Never be apologetic for putting your health and your child's health first. You're the only one who knows what your body can handle. You're doing everything right sweetheart. Keep your head up :) .
  • That's what sick leave is for! We can use 2 sick days for family emergency or appointments, the rest are for unanticipated illness or injury. I've already used 6 this pregnancy because of hyperemesis.

  • When I was working, I had sick days (I'm thinking it was 5 days a year), 5 weeks of vacation, and 2 personal days. When I was pregnant was pregnant with baby #2, I used at least half of it. The other half I combined with my 6 weeks maternity leave. It was hard to come back to such little leave time after having so much, but pregnancy will do it! I had severe back pain (and back labor) with him...glad I'm not suffering from it this time! As long as your boss is understanding, you should be fine.
  • I took a sick day last week because of a migraine I couldn't shake, but I haven't taken any time off specifically for pregnancy. You gotta listen to you body though and do what you need to do. My job is far from physically demanding so it hasn't been an issue. I wouldn't worry too much over what they call it as long as you get a paid day off. Sick leave is just a general term to cover a wide range of reasons you may have to miss work.
