PP questions. has this happened to you? advice?

POSTEPIDURAL QUESTION: Ive had one continuous headache since May 4th when I had Cohen. My nurse says I'm leaking spinal fluid from my epidural. She suggested I drink as much Mountain Dew and eat as much chocolate as I possibly can and to lay flat with my feet up. Anybody else had leaky fluid?? I also was allergic to the tape they put on my back. My whole back and sides itched and I had a giant rash of hives. Now I can't feel part of my back and it's discolored. Like I got a tan in one big splotch.

DISCHARGE QUESTION: so my bleeding stopped after like 2 weeks. Now it's just clearish liquid. But sometimes when I go to the bathroom I go to wipe and it's like I'm losing a mucus plug again. Snotty looking stuff that (and I'm sorry for TMI) just kinda hangs out. Yuck! What is this?? Is it normal??

  • 1) Call your doctor and ask about a blood patch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidural_blood_patch

    2) Yes, this is normal - lochia turns to clearish discharge before disappearing. It's normal to see occasional clotting/pink/bloody discharge as well.

  • @marijaa333 Yea I did call about the blood patch but she told me to do the chocolate and Mountain Dew thing first to see it it would help. So far nothing.
  • with all due respect to nurses, you need to consult a doctor about this :)
  • You're right about that! I didn't do the "treatment" she gave me. I mean I lost my 20 lbs I don't want it back! Lol. That and I hate Mountain Dew and chocolate X.x
  • I had the epidural headache too. The blood patch has a 90% chance of almost instantly curing the headache. I did the blood patch and it worked for the first 12 hours or so then the headache came back. I ended up having to lay completely flat for almost a week and I drank upwards of 300mg of caffeine a day. Motrin would also take the edge off a little. This headache really sucks when you're trying to care for a newborn so I'd tell you to definitely try the blood patch if they'll let you. All they do is put a needle into your back where you had the epidural, draw blood from your hand, and put the blood into your back. It's totally worth it if it works and you'll feel relief within a couple of hours.
  • I had some sort of reaction to. The tape as well my stomach has a tan looking blotch and itches and is numb from the c section tape
  • This happened to me, too ~  Definitely, definitely call your doctor and go back to get the blood patch!  It will make a huge difference. Don't waste your time with the caffeine & fluids (but the Motrin does help). These epidural headaches can take weeks to go away completely if you don't get the blood patch (I've had them twice with both kids).  Ditto to PP @purplepigmy comments.
