Tearing during labor

I gave birth to my baby girl a week ago and I tore my labia minora (inner labia). The doctor asked me if I wanted stitches at the moment I said no. For those who had tears, how long did it take for it to heal. Would getting it stiched help it heal quicker?

Re: Tearing during labor

  • It's labia. Not libia. I think Libya is a country though.........
The doctor wouldn't ask you if you wanted stitches if it wasn't a minor tear that would heal itself..........
Probably a barely 1st degree tear.
    Hmmmmmm

  • The way I pictured a torn labia is it being ripped in half and just healing without the labia halfs fusing back together. Very bad visual. I hope it heals up good for you. I personally would have gone with the stitches.

With my first, healing took a long time but I had a major incision down there to accommodate high forceps. There are a lot of nerve endings that will be sensitive for a while (weeks). Just keep up with your pain management and it will get better.

Whether or not you should have gotten stitches is kinda moot now. So just focus on healing! Ibuprofen, Tylenol, sitz baths, etc.
  • My left inner labe tore about a third of the way down. I declined stitches. It was swollen and painful for about two weeks, healed fine with no real issues, and now my lady business has a butterfly wing on one side. It hasn't caused me any real issues, although, when 'doing the deed' If I'm not aroused enough to be well lubricated, it sometimes folds in a little and is uncomfortable... Slowing down the warm up and taking our time helps, and my husband has never complained.

Also, my doctor at the time told me that natural tears heal faster than cuts and that stitches take longer to heal because the wound doesn't get as much air.
