Food before/during labor

Curious to know... Did your appetite change before you went into labor? Did you find it was helpful to eat something before giving birth? Avoid eating something? Any food seem to make it better or worse?

When I had my daughter I didn't eat anything before going to the hospital because I left at 3am in labor and I was so thankful I didn't eat because I did nothing but throw up my entire 16 hours of labor and I had zero appetite for even hours after. So you may or may not want to eat.

I didn't feel like eating when k went into labor and headed to the hospital. I will say, when I ended up with a csection I dry heaved for a good portion of it. I kept thinking I was happy I didn't eat!

I wasn't too hungry while in labor with DS1 and developed nausea as the pain became more severe. I forced myself to eat some scrambled eggs and toast for energy before we headed to the hospital. I kept it down ok!

With LO #1, my water broke at about 3:30 AM and we headed to the hospital soon after since I was gbs+. I was so anxious/excited that all I could stomach on the way to the hospital were a few graham crackers. I was STARVING for the whole day and LO ended up being born at almost 11 PM. It's one of the main reasons I went with a midwife this time at a hospital that allows me to eat as long as I dont have an epidural. Who knows if it'll be the same this time but I felt so weak and hungry by the time I had to push that it discouraged me. Eat before you go and consider having snacks with you if you are allowed/comfortable with sneaking a few bites of something here or there when no nurses are in the room.

I was absolutely starving during my labors and no one would let me eat - not even while I was up and walking around. It made me irritable and it was hard to focus, plus it was so draining. I'm going to eat as much as I can before I go this time - and you better believe I'll be sneaking snacks and drinks like nobody's business!

What snacks are you going to sneak in?

I went into labor with my first at around 5pm, but the contractions didn't pick up until about 8 so I ate a normal dinner.  When we got to the hospital at 1am, I ended up puking (and was happy there was nothing in my stomach - I ended up just throwing up acid) when I started transition.  I wasn't worried about running out of energy during labor, but I was really hungry when 6am came around (he was born at 4) for breakfast! I scarfed everything down!

@Westypet I have oatmeal bars, dried fruit, pecans, rice cakes, and coconut water ready to go. I don't know if I'll actually want some of everything, but I think I'll appreciate the options :)

Good call! I am one of those "food is medicine" types, so this is really scary to go without!!!

Just wanted to say thanks to all for sharing their experiences! Sounds like it can definitely go both ways. I've been concerned about not being able to eat for several hours once admitted to the hospital, anticipating how physically exhausting and difficult laboring will be. I think my plan will be to try to eat something high in protein before heading to the hospital, and I'll have snacks in the bag as well (mostly for after, if it's the middle of the night and difficult to get food right away... but might sneak a bite during labor too, depending on how it goes!).

Good for you!  That rule is so outdated.  My hospital encourages women to eat/drink, but if they didn't I would just do it anyway.

OP: Try to eat in labor particularly early on when it is easier to do so.  I always go for something light, crackers, granola bars, juice, Popsicles or watered down Gaterade.

I lost my mucus plug on a Monday & the following day I had ZERO appetite which was weird because my appetite had recently come back when LO dropped. Additionally, that Tuesday, nearly every time I went to the restroom I had a bowel movement. TMI, I know but in retrospect that was my body's way of prepping for labor as I didn't poop during labor like most of us were afraid of!

Contractions began early Wednesday morning (1:45AM) and LO was born at 9:06 AM.

During early labor I had a cup of full fat plain Greek yogurt with strawberries & raspberries however she came so fast I didn't eat again until she was born. The labor-aid electrolyte drink I made wasn't consumed until after she came.
