Baby cereal...best bottles/nipples

my de just recommended adding cereal to my 4 week olds bottle to help with reflux and vomiting. I'm having a hard time finding nipples that allow the cereal to pass through but aren't too fast that it chokes my little man. I'm currently using Avent variable flow but it comes out too fast and runs out the side of his mouth. Feeding time has become super frustrating. Any suggestions?

  • I think there are Avent nipples specifically for cereal in bottles????

If the cereal nipples don't work you can always try the pace feeding method if you aren't using it already.
Me 26 DH 31. Off oral contraception since 1/2012. Actively TTC # 1 since 4/2012. CD3 bloodwork, hsg normal 6/2013. SA performed 7/2013 - low count, low motility. First RE appointment 9/4/2013. Were told SA not good enough for IUI. Repeat SA and additional bloodwork ordered. RE suggests DH see a urologist. http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/3e32d9/thumb.png

Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. It's widely known that cereal is used to help with reflux by thickening the milk.
  • It actually appears to only be in the States that cereal is recommended for reflux in babies. That may be where CanadaMom differs.
  • My 10 week old has reflux and she was given medicine to take which has helped a lot, cereal was never mentioned to help with her reflux. He said that will be introduced at her 4 month appointment.

Dude, it's biology.  The American Paediatric Society, the Canadian Paediatric Society, and the World Health Organisation all recommend NO introduction of solids until 6 months or later because of this.  However, I will concur that some doctors are behind the times.

Yes, the new recommendation is to introduce solids at 6 months but it's very common to thicken milk with cereal to help with reflux. This is done a LOT. You can even buy formula made specifically for spit up that has cereal in it already. It helps a lot especially if you don't want to put your baby on medication.
  • The cereal is just to thicken the formula. It's still very liquidy and not solid. Many drs recommend this here in the states. I've asked numerous drs and other mothers and they were all told the same thing. It's literally a teaspoon and a half is all it takes. It helped tremendously!
