Nursery decor - chair advice

Hi ladies I feel like I'm in a lull as I don't look pregnant and I don't have the 20 week scan for a couple of weeks... I've started scouring pinterest for nursery decor to pass the time... I know its still a bit early!

I have modern style but obviously practicality trumps style in the case of chairs. I plan to breastfeed. Any moms have advice? Should it be a rocker? Do we need an Ottoman? Does the size/shape matter etc etc

Re: Nursery decor - chair advice

  • Go to the store with both you and your SO and sit in them. Grab a boopy and make sure you can use it comfortably in the chair.
We both liked the rocker and the ottoman- it's nice to put your feet up. But my husband wasn't comfortable in the chair- it had a lower back and he couldn't lean his head back. Something you only think about at 3am when you're rocking a baby to sleep.

We sold our last one and are looking for a new one this time. We plan to go and sit in them and test them out now that we know what we both like.

  • To add to the great points @ponto31 made, make sure you can both get up from the chair comfortably while pretending not to disturb a sleeping little one.  You want something you won't "get stuck in" and can easily maneuver in and out of with the lest amount of disturbance.  Imagine the hell of spending precious time rocking a newborn back to sleep only to waste the effort by rattling him/her awake when trying to get up and get yourself back to bed.
  • Imagine sitting in or even sleeping in it as well.  I was given a beautiful wooden rocker with my first.  Even with a cushion on the seat it was too uncomfortable to actually use.

  • I have a glider/ottoman combo that was given to me. I hardly ever use the ottoman actually. And if I would have bought myself I would have much preferred the comfier style chair that looks more like a recliner than the wood.

We just purchased ours.  We did as the previous posters suggested and sat in them, really focusing on the height of the arms (are they tall enough to support your arm while feeding?), comfort and ease of putting the recliner up.  We went with an electric recliner because the up and down motion is so smooth, not jerky like the manual ones and the buttons are right there on the arm.  (No leaning way over with a baby in your arms to try and kick the feet back)  We talked to tons of friends that had babies and all suggested the recliner over the gliders as they are more comfortable and easier to fall asleep in yourself during middle of the night feedings.  The recliner we purchased also rocks when the feet are down.  Oh, and we did leather...I didn't want a fabric that spit up could soak into but rather something that could be wiped off.

  • Definitely try out a few as pp have suggested.  We have a Shermag glider with ottoman.  I love it.  The arms are a great height for nursing with a boppy/pillow.  I spent hours in it with my first (as did my parents and husband) and it is still in daily use in our toddler's room.  The style is not what I would pick out personally (it was a surprise gift from SO), but the neutral color makes it easy to dress up with pillows and throws depending on what room we have it in.  I would highly recommend trying it out if you see one while shopping, don't be put off by the traditional/old fashioned look.

  • i was never able to breastfeed in a chair. It was too uncomfortable and my chair was too narrow to have the feeding pillow and baby. But i did use it for a year to rock DD to sleep.
  • Lots of great advice on here already! I would add that I was really paranoid about a rocker squishing the cat's tail and/or little baby fingers or toes so I got one that sits on a round swivel thing. It's really comfy and is something that I'll use elsewhere in the house once we're done with it in the nursery.
  • All really great advice!! I'd add, if you want to keep it in the room/ house when baby turns into toddler, get a sturdy rocker that won't tip over backwards easily if pushed from the front or rocked toddler hard. (The plain traditional wooden ones for sure go over pretty easily. )
  • I found that I was more comfortable breastfeeding in bed than a chair, and for the first few weeks we camped out on my huge sectional rather than the bedroom because it was easier for me. I'm personally not a fan of sleeping in a chair, so I just bought a glider/ottoman combo that is comfortable enough to rock baby in, but not something I will want to spend hours in.
  • Like others have said, go sit and try them out. I found that our local baby boutiques had better quality chairs from which to choose. We chose a best chairs brand chair that is grey micro fiber. My son had reflux and vomited all over it. It was super easy to clean and shows not signs of use.
I recommend one that rocks and reclines. My other stipulation was resale. Chairs are expensive. I wanted to either be able to use the chair in another room or resell it.
