Rh- moms to be question

I have ab- blood type and my husband is o-. Last pregnancy my obgyn insisted I get the Rhogam shot regardless. I did but this time round I don't want too. It just seems odd to me to inject my body with an unnecessary medication. I know their reasoning is that they aren't 100% sure my husband is the father so it is better to be on the safe side(for them). But I know 100% he is and the medication is not necessary. What are your opinions on this?

Re: Rh- moms to be question

  • I am an RH- mom, I got the shot last time and will again. The benefits far outweigh an unnecessary shot. Without the shot you could potentially lose your baby. I know I am not going to take that risk.

  • Meh. It's just like a vaccine and prevents any chances of my blood recognizing something else. I got it twice with my last pregnancy, but I know my hubs is +.

  • I would be annoyed too if my dh were -. He's +, so I have to get it regardless.

But if I didn't need it, I wouldn't want it either. It's not just an unnecessary shot. There are some potential side effects for rhogham. Sure, the risk is very small. But if there is no risk for you in not getting the shot and small risk for getting the shot, it makes sense to not want the shot.

That being said, I vaguely remember that blood typing is not at all as straightforward as we were taught in high school and there can be very odd, but rare, variations. So maybe there is an actual medical reason for them wanting you to have it. They should explain them to you, though.

I have probably had it more than 10 times? Never noticed any adverse effects. I will get is as many times as my dr feels is necessary. I trust her to make the right choices regarding my health. Not sure if I will need the final one this time as I am getting my tubes tied.

That's what I will ask about. I'm not educated in this area so I guess if they have better reasons I will take them seriously. My son was born - so I've

  • Only had the shot once. No negatives that I recall so I will if I have to. I guess I will bring it up at my next appt.

  • I got the shot last time and will again. DH is definitely the father and has RH+ blood.

That was really informative. Way more complicated than I thought too.

  • They also recommend it in case any of your future pregnancies could be with an incompatible blood type, re marriage or IVF.
  • I am the result of not having the shot when it should have been given - I miscarried and was not given it at the hospital. I subsequently developed antibodies not to the rhesus blood groups but to minor ones that are harder to test for. It has been a massive battle to get pregnant again, the antibodies cost me 3 pregnancies with my ex husband but this one so far I'm not reacting so we think my new partner will not have the same issue. It has been awful and not to say that you will end up in the same boat, not at all, but... I'll always say have the shots, just in case. It may be the minor groups that they are concerned about.
  • I still don't entirely understand it but I do understand enough to know it's important regardless so I will be getting the shot :)

  • I'm A negative and my husband is B negative. I declined the rhogam shot last pregnancy. I didn't read the article above yet, but it makes no sense to me since two Rh negative people can't make a Rh positive baby. My ob/gyn said she has to recommend it since not everyone is correct in knowing who the father is. I know absolutely for sure!

  • Ok so I read the article linked above. Hmm. Now I wonder if my ob/gyn wasn't aware of these rare possibilities?
