December 2015 Moms

When do you prepare?

I am at 14w3d and I am already pretty prepared. We painted the nursery as soon as we started trying (a light yellow color so it could be for either gender or just a plain bedroom rather than a nursery) because I knew I didn't want to have to have it painted while pregnant and the room needed a fresh coat anyways. (We purchased our home 2 1/2 years ago and it was the only room with white walls, and I hate white walls!) I have also been hoarding baby clothes and items since we started trying so I could hit up sales (we started trying in November so we had black Friday & Christmas sales so I found lots of great deals on your baby basics) and since we had decided when we talked about having a baby that neither of us want to find out the gender of our first before birth it was easy to buy all gender neutral stuff. I have most of the basic clothes I need for the first 12mo and then we will purchase gender specific clothes after the baby arrives. So far we have already purchased the crib bedding set, the crib with conversion kits & dresser/changer, a pack and play, bounce seat, and several other items. I have also started washing, folding, and organizing the clothes how I want them... Is anyone else preparing like this so early? I don't want to be trying to take care of everything when I am 8 or 9 mo pregnant, plus the last two months of my pregnancy are going to be busy enough with harvest, which I will hopefully still be able to participate in so I wouldn't have much to prepare then either!

Re: When do you prepare?

  • I just bought pretty much everything that is essential at first except for clothes. I'm 13 wks. I agree with the not wanting to be doing that at 8 or 9 months pregnant. We don't have anything actually set up yet though. I'm one of those overly on time overly prepared people so it's expected from me!

  • I got a ridiculous nesting urge during the last month of my last pregnancy. Ended up organizing our garage and all of our closets. I'm talking label maker and everything.

So save some stuff for the end!
  • We have the dresser and crib set up, and I have the crib made because it looked weird having it set up and not made! I too am one of those type of people who has to be well prepared way ahead of time. Being due the very beginning of December and because I have a bicornuate uterus I was told by my doctors that there is a good chance I will go early and October & November I spend the majority of my time in the combine harvesting which I am still hoping to be able to do this year I want to be prepared before then, and if I have major nesting urge I am sure I will still have plenty to clean organize even if it isn't baby stuff!
  • Wow!! That's a lot of stuff to have already! Good job mama! I started buying everything when I was 20 weeks last time. And everything was done and ready by September. (DS had a similar due date as this one -12/7) When DS decided to make his appearance on 10/31, everything was ready! So I was sooooo glad that I prepped and purchased everything early.

So to answer your question. 20 weeks is a good time to start. But you've already started so you're good!

  • We haven't organised anything yet but I think I'll have to get organised in July (during university break) because I have a lot of exams in October/November so would like everything to be done by then! I soooo wish I was as organised as you sound though.
  • Our official due date is 12/7, I am a crazy sale shopper so I have made sure to shop the sales and deals, all of the big stuff I have purchased so far has been at least 15% off and the clothes even more off. I have made a lot of the blankets, burp clothes, and even a nursing cover and car seat cover & arm protector. I have started stocking up on diapers and baby wash, lotion, etc when I have coupons or they are on sale or even better both! I also wanted to make sure I purchased the furniture early because as I read through reviews every single one had at least 1 review saying something arrived broken and because they have to go through the manufacturer to get replacement pieces some took months to get the replacement parts and some didn't get there until after baby arrived so I made sure that was one of our first big purchases and we ordered it at 13 weeks and it came in just a few days!
  • I have a lot of decorative things from. my last pregnancy but I want to wait until I am past 20 weeks and had my anatomy scan before I make any large puchases. Whatever you're feeling, just do.

  • If we were finding out the gender we would likely be waiting until after our 20wk ultrasound also, but we wanted everything to be gender neutral so we could use it in the future as well so there is a good chance we would still be going mostly the same route if we were finding out.
  • Wow some of you ladies are super prepared. Just do what feels right to you and don't worry about it. In my last/first pregnancy I didn't even register till 23 weeks and I definitely did not buy anything before then. We set up the crib in July and I was due in late sept. Everything was pretty much ready by 35 weeks. Good thing since I gave birth at 36.
  • We found out very early that we were expecting. I don't want my pregnancy to crawl by so I'm just doing a little at a time. We have registered for our main big ticket items that are gender neutral. Stroller, car seat etc. But I'm really just trying to spread it all out. Do something kinda big every month.
  • I already bought a Mamaroo, Mico Cosi AP infant seat, Baby Jogger City Mini GT, Boppy, inherited a top of the line Madela pump, and bought a ton of gender neutral onesies, footsie pajamas and swaddlers. I also have the main bedding coming in the the mail from Land of Nod and some decorative items from Zulilly. DH is already aware that boy or girl this baby will be having a predominately teal/aqua nursery ad wardrobe.
MIL is generously buying us the crib, changing table, dresser and glider so I have to wait until she wants to go shopping to get those (they are all picked out)!
My SIL has a two year old girl and a 6 month old boy and is anxiously awaiting news of our babies' sex so that she can send us all the sex-specific clothing she has saved. She has crazy good taste and is so generous to be giving us all the clothing she saved. As soon as she found out I was pregnant a giant box arrived on my door with the Madela pump, post-partum waist slimming belts, and a wardrobe of Pea in the Pod, Rosie Pope and Motherhood maternity clothes.
We want everything ready by 28 weeks at the latest since I'm a high-risk mama that will likely need to be induced weeks early. Even my OB mentioned during yesterday's appointment that in my case being prepared a little early would be a smart move :)
Are plan from here on out is to buy a case of diapers, some clothing, and other little things each month or while we happen to be out shopping together. We have very small but generous families but I do not want them buying big things for a shower...I have guilt issues with large gifts even if it is for the baby and not me.
I think the fact that I quit work at 12w due to my HG and finding out I am high-risk has made me a little baby-preparing crazy. It's hard to just wait and slow things down.
    The struggle is real.
  • Yep I'm right there with you. We already have a fully furnished nursery, closet full of clothes and diapers and I've started laundering the clothes too. I'll be ready when baby comes!
  • My plan was not to get anything until 20 weeks rolled around. But I do like the point that some mommas have made about buying big things one at a time. I definately don't want to be squeezing in all the big purchases at once. I guess I'll just mentally separate what I think I'll be getting from the shower and what we will be buying on our own. So excited (:

  • With my third, I'm not too anxious to get started. I'm still changing my boys wardrobes from winter to summer! I'm experienced enough to know that baby doesn't need much, and will sleep in our room for at least six months, so a nursery is no rush.

But it's so fun to get ready for your first!
  • I made a month by month to do list to spread out everything. We are moving in October we can't really get anything set up for baby until then and It's starting to look like I'm having 3 baby showers which is crazy but my family lives far away and my mom wants to have one for me when DH and I come to visit for Labor Day, my coworkers want to have one at work Halloween themed, and my SIL here wants to have one with DH family and our local friends. It's all really overwhelming to me but this is our first baby and we are pretty young so we need all the help we can get. I don't want to go buy a bunch of stuff that we might be gifted so I'm trying to hold out. We do already have a bassinet (beautiful family hand me down that I'm in love with) and my FIL wants to build a changing table (he's built at least one piece of furniture for each grand baby) we are going to start stocking up on diapers, wipes, medicine, and toiletries starting next month only buying clearance and good deals.
  • I am going to start stocking up on diapers and wipes next month.  I am getting some big ticket items from family.  If it is a boy (my first was a girl), my sister really wants to throw me a shower, so we need to wait and see on gender.

We are totally remodeling our house as we don't have a spare bedroom.... so we are turning an office into our room (having to add a wall), giving our old room to DD and freshening up the old nursery.... and we have not really started lol.... so no I guess we are not that prepared... We start construction the end of this month... so we will get there...

I still have to dig through our downstairs closet and pull all the baby stuff out... I already got the car seat out to find it is expired :(
  • I have some baby gear just cause I work in the baby industry, but we just bought a house and moving mid-July so once we're settled in i'll start preparing on a higher level.
  • I'm going to wait to stock up on a lot of things until our baby shower!
We have started looking for furniture we like but haven't made any big purchases yet. We figured we would wait a couple more months.
I hope I get that nesting urge soon though because my house is currently a mess!! I've been way to exhausted to do anything!!

With my first I started preparing during second trimester and had plenty of time. With this one we need almost nothing, we have an extra room for baby but I'm not even planning on preparing a nursery. I figure we will co-sleep and then he or she can share the nursery with DD. If this one is a boy we will buy some 0-6 month clothes, and eventually I want a double jogging stroller but otherwise we are all set. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself once the nesting bug hits ;-) Preparing the nursery and picking out all the baby gear the first time is so fun, enjoy and do it whenever feels right to you!
  • It really depends on the person. For us, we've done nothing. :) We have a car seat that was gifted to us and we've bought a pair of shoes and a onesie but that's about it! We've sort of been waiting until second tri just to be sure everything sticks and is going well. We just had a conversation recently about getting the nursery started. It's currently our guest room so it will take some reorganization - moving stuff to other parts of the house, getting rid of some stuff, putting some stuff into storage. DH is an artist so he's going to be painting the nursery. We will be finding out the sex in a couple weeks and after that we'll start. We have an idea that is neutral right now but we also have a different idea if it's a girl so we haven't quite decided what we want to do with it.

We're also getting a bunch of hand me downs in a lot of areas (clothes, crib, etc) so we know it's coming and we didn't need to really go buy anything yet. I'm sure second tri will be a busy one as we start to prepare.

I'm with you. I don't know how you ladies have the energy for all that! This is our first and we figured we'll see what we get at the shower and go from there. I'm 15 weeks and haven't even thought about the registry yet!
  • I have received a few onsies that are Christmas themed and we bought our crib yesterday (almost 13 weeks). We got an ikea crib and the tend to go out of stock for months at a time. They only had 2 in stock so we decided to just get it now. Waiting to set things up though since we are moving in a couple months.
  • We have not started setting anything up yet since baby will be room sharing with our DS. We want to keep his room the same until closer to my due date. We will definitely have everything set-up by 32 weeks. With our DS, he was born at 35 weeks and I didn't have anything ready. My parents were coming into town at xmas to bring the crib/changing table. My in-laws were buying the car seat, but hadn't gotten it yet. Needless to say, it was like magic while I was delivering and recovering in the hospital. When I was released, everything was ready for DS. He didn't come home from the NICU for another week, so I had some time to figure out where everything was before I needed it.
  • I still have a lot of stuff, and this being my third baby, I don't really nest anymore. There's a place for the baby to sleep, an infant car seat, onesies, and diapers. So I'm good.

Just want to chime in with a thought to All of you stocking up on diapers and wipes. Be careful for two reasons. Sizing. You may not need a lot of newborn sizes. It's so hard to judge. And allergy/reaction. My daughter couldn't wear huggies but pampers were fine. I'm glad I waited. Just my 2 cents!
  • We are going to start decorating and everything after we find out the gender. Lots of people have told us to avoid shopping until after the baby shower because we will get most everything we need and be able to save our money for whatever we didn't get. It's going to be really hard for us to avoid shopping after we know the gender but I am trying to make sure we can be good and maybe just try and get a few cute outfits that we can't pass up. Painting though will happen the moment we know what it is =)

Yes! Or your baby's physicality may not agree with one diaper over the other. Mine did great with Pampers Swaddlers but the legs were too tight on Huggies. When she started crawling, I wanted to try Huggies Movers, but every time she had a poop, they leaked. We didn't have that issue with Pampers Cruisers.
