Blanket in the crib?

So we have always used a sleep sack for DD. She moves a ton in her sleep, so we just weren't comfortable with a blanket. Well, she is moving on in daycare to the infant walker room, and they are starting to suggest she uses a blanket instead. This makes me slightly nervous because in the new room, the teachers can't always see the cribs. They claim they check periodically, but I've seen babies sleep with blankets near their face or even on it, and the teachers not do anything. Any words encouraging blankets at this age? Suggestions for a good blanket would be nice too. To put in perspective, her sleep sack is a 0.5 tog bc it gets so warm in the rooms.

Re: Blanket in the crib?

  • My son has slept with an Aden and Anais blanket for months. It's muslin so it is very thin.

Same here. If it gets over his face, I know LO can stil breathe. Plus, he is big and strong enough to move a blanket or the like out of the way. I still get nervous sometimes, but he does great and often kicks the blanket off and out of the way if he doesn't want it on.
  • We've done a blanket for a few months now. No problems but if you are worried I would get a very light one!
  • ScotchAggie you need to do whatever you are comfortable with.  If you don't feel good about your LO having a blanket then continue to use your sleep sack.  Good luck!

My LO sleeps with a fleece blanket at daycare (although he hasn't been using it much because it's been so warm!). I was nervous at first too, but it's been fine. If it makes you nervous, I would suggest finding a light, breathable blanket.
  • I'm still on the sleep sack bandwagon, largely because LO moves so much in his sleep and when it's hot I can just put him in with a diaper and have less risk of him pulling off his diaper or something like that. If you still want to use a sleep sack, they should respect that.

I think I'm going to start using a blanket at naptime at home and see how it goes. She doesn't move as much at naptime. At bedtime she is all over the place I'm not sure how much good a blanket would do so we still use a sleep sack or Just pajamas when it's warmer out.
  • We've started to use a breathable blanket for naps (when it's cool out) but a sleep sack for night time. She is all over the crib during the night.

This is related: The sleep sack we have is fleece and obviously it's getting to warm for that with summer coming. I do not know how to dress my kid for sleep in warm weather! I'm used to freezing temps so I'm always worried she'll be cold. When I sleep, even in warm temps, I like to have my arms covered when I have the A/C on. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of getting a different breathable sleep sack. I feel weird putting her to bed without some sort of a sack/blanket.

  • We still use sleep sacks for warmth, but she's been using an Aden & Anais blanket as a lovey since about 7 mos.

  • We've used blankets from the very beginning.  His favorite is his crocheted one.  He likes to stick his fingers through the holes.

  • I am probably a terrible person, but we have been using blankets since she was about 3 months. They are light single layer flannel and we started because DD hates being confined in ANY way...even a loose sleep sack frustrated her and she refused to sleep. Once she reached the point where she was holding her own bottle and rolling over we felt she was strong and aware enough to use a blanket.

We started putting a blanket on him when we switched over from fleece footies to footless bottom and top separates.  Sometimes it stays on.  Most nights it balled up in the corner by morning.

DD has been using a blanket for a while now. We use a home made afghan (the way that it is made it it has holes the size of a penny so I am not too worried out breathing if it goes over her face).
  • Ahh! My A/C is busted! I swear I don't know how to dress my kid for sleep. It's 78 degrees in her bedroom so I put her in just a onesie with nothing else. The window is open and i have a floor fan going. I can always close the window and turn off the fan later but risk waking her up later. I also have an A & A blanket but I don't know if she's ready.

  • Even with ac, lo's room stays at 78 or so. We have to keep the rest of the house freezing cold to get his room cool. It's so frustrating. But a fan going, sleeping in shorts/t-shirt pjs or a onesie, and a light A&A blanket (which he usually kicks off at some point, but likes cuddling with at first) seems to keep him comfy. I've never seen him wake up sweaty or anything.
  • That makes me feel better, thanks!.

  • No problem! It makes me feel better to know we're not alone in the toasty-room situation too! He really doesn't seem to mind. Hope you and your LO get good sleep tonight!
  • DD's room is pretty warm too and I sometimes get a sweaty baby. The weather has been so weird lately though, so I will put her to bed in a onesie with a fan on and wake up to coldness...but DD is a light sleeper in a the morning so I'm afraid to go in and put a blanket on her!

  • Good to know I'm not the only one! I hate that DD is a heavy sleeper at night but come morning she is really light. I tip toe when I take a shower in the am!

  • Lo is also a really light sleeper in the morning. During the school year she just wakes up with us when our alarms go off at 530. A friend of mine suggested putting a box fan in the room with her to keep the noise going throughout the night and into the morning. Haven't tried it yet but I'm going to this week since my husband and I are both home for the summer and she's still waking at 530!
  • Ooh, that sucks! I get up for work at 7am but DH doesn't have to get up until 9:30 (he works until 10pm and stays up until 2am) so I try very hard to be really quiet while getting ready. Unfortunately the bathroom is between our room and DD's room... and our shower floor creaks very loudly. The best is when I tiptoe around and then knock something over in the hallway lol.

We use a box fan and I couldn't imagine sleeping without it. It drowns out SO much noise. Our bedroom is on the other side of the kitchen and I can't hear a thing. It's awesome.
  • Put me in the "LO's room is hot" camp. It used to be our guest room and friends have told me how warm it gets in there. I've got a floor fan going and put LO to bed in just his jammies.

We have the window open in the hall and fans going there, so if it's too warm I'll open his door at night when we go to bed to get the air flowing. I used to be anal about keeping it closed because we have two cats, but I figure at LO's age now, the cats are the ones with the bigger problem if they jump in the crib!

One day when we win the lotto or don't have daycare fees we will spring for AC!

This is me! Whenever I am trying to be quiet I always trip over something or drop something!

  • We have a fan in lo's room for white noise and it works wonderfully. So well, in fact, that when I was putting LO down for a nap one day and had accidentally locked DH out of the house, he broke down the door because he thought something had happened to us. I didn't hear him knocking, pounding, ringing the doorbell, OR breaking the door down. Needless to say, I removed the "please do not ring bell" sign from our door. ;)
  • Wow @Sporty1216 ! That's a good fan!
