For second time plus Moms...Induce at 41 weeks or wait until closer to 42?

Wondering if anyone experienced this.  I went 2 weeks early with my first daughter at 38 weeks.  Water broke on its own, went into labor naturally, got foley bulb to dilate, got low levels of pitocin due to contractions getting further apart, delivered vaginally at 24 hours because I dilated very slowly, success thank God!  Now with my second daughter I am due today and they want to induce me at 41 weeks exactly.  I have heard that waiting closer to 42 does come with some risk but that the risk is not too high if baby and you are healthy.  I really want to avoid a C-Section ....any advice or knowledge on those who decided to wait a little longer or had a simiilar scenerio????

  • A lot can happen between now and next week, so I bet you won't even have a decision to make :) That being said I think it is such a grey area and depends on so many factors that there is no real 'right' or 'wrong' just your provider's comfort level and your own.  You could always have them check your Bishop Score at 41w, that should give you a pretty good picture as to what your risk of c-section would be (pretty low I'm guessing considering how far along you will be at that point).  Provided everything else is looking good my practice recommends induction at 41w6d.

The risk factor is an aged placenta. Making oxygen perfusion to your baby during labor or even not during labor less than normal. I would not take that lightly.
  • To add.... Like the previous poster said... Hopefully you will go into labor here this week and not have to worry about it!
  • For myself, I would not consent to an induction without evidence that it was needed (and thus that risks were going up for me vs. statistics about others, which as you point out still are very marginal). You can request non-stress tests to help you assess.

  • I loved getting induced! I have been induced with all three of my kids. I had an aged placenta with my first child and that is no joke. You also have to think about the size. The bigger he/she is the more likely you will have a c section. Good luck and best wishes
  • I'm a STM who was induced last time at 39 weeks. I'm not getting induced until 41+3 this time and I'm super p o'd. Not an option to have it done sooner according to my OB. I'd give my left boob to have had this baby 2 weeks ago at 39 weeks! My advice-get that baby out when you can! May go against some ppl's judgement :)

  • I had my first at 39+3. With this one lots of BH and had my membranes stripped at 38, 39, 40w but only false labor. I'm being induced today at 40+2. We're concerned baby is getting too big and I want to avoid c-section.

  • I had my son at 41 +6. My midwives were fine with me getting to 42, but not past that. They did a membrane sweep the day before and I was in labor 12 hours later. I would suggest doing a sweep or other natural induction techniques (herbs, breast pump) before going with a chemical induction. As far along as you are, your body probably just needs a little push to get things started. Good luck!
