who's quitting job when baby comes

Hi all
planning on being a stay at home mom for a while after baby comes. Concerned about how and when to quit my job (after maternity leave?).
anyone else in my shoes or been in my shoes??

Re: who's quitting job when baby comes

  • I will be leaving my job after. If you get any types of benefits like disability or paid vacation you can use during your maternity leave then you will want to let them know your not coming back when your already on leave!

  • I'm not necessarily leaving, but definitely cutting down. I only work part time as it is. My dh has a crazy, hectic, all over the place work schedule, so I really won't have a choice but to cut down my hours to next to nothing. I'm fine with it and I feel lucky that that's possible for me to stay home with the baby.
  • I wish I could go part time but for the time being I am going to work from home for one day which will be helpful. I will have to see how it all works out when the baby arrives!
  • I'm a teacher so I just told them I wouldn't be back next year. I'm going to sub. up until the baby comes and then stay home after!
  • I've been working with the same company for years and have no real benefits, so I'll be leaving work to be a stay at home mom and work on my nursing degree.
  • You will want to wait until you are on leave for you to tell them you are not coming back, if you get disability. FMLA protects you from being let go while you are post-partum.
  • @cristinapage72 do you know where I can find more info on that. Just not sure when to quit and still keep the benefits. I feel bad that I'm going to put my boss out but want all my benefits...

I'm fortunate enough to be able to have already quit my job. ( I was terribly unhappy so it was worth it) I plan on looking for part time-ish next summer.
  • I have known several people who didn't go back to their jobs after maternity leave, and after collecting short term disability, and had to pay back the disability.  Not sure how that works, but it may be worth it to go back to work, put in a two weeks notice, and then leave.  Even protected under FMLA, I've seen a clause in STD benefits about having to pay it back if you don't return.

As for me, I work in healthcare and recently took a Saturday/Sunday/Monday position and my husband is going to only go into his office on Tuesday-Friday when the baby is born.  Either way, one of us will be with our baby and we both get to keep the jobs that we love.
  • I'm hoping to quit my job and jump right into a new one. I'm also worried having heard about people paying back disability I wonder how that works.

Do you have an HR department? If so, they should be able to explain your benefits and help you apply for FMLA and short-term disability (if yoy have it). I would refrain from telling them you don't plan on coming back though.

I know, it's difficult to do that to your boss, but as a manager, it used to happen to me all the time. It's just a fact of life.
  • Also want to mention, in response to paying back disability, they did not do that at my office because you paid your own disability coverage during employment. The company did not pay for it, so they didn't care.
  • I'm not leaving but my employer allows a lot of time off. I will be taking 5 months off after baby and that still gives me a month of vacation without me having to take any FMLA/short-term disability. My boss already told me when I return, they will decrease my travel significantly which I am really grateful for.

  • I will be leaving at the end of July. I wanted to wait till the end of October but DD is starting pre school and have no family or friends around to drop or pick her up. DH works a different shift every week which is never consistent. I'm excited to get to spend some with DD before our little peanut gets here!
  • I honestly want to but the DH needs some convincing. My work recently started to give me a hard time about my pregnancy and it rubbed me the wrong way and I would love to quit today if I my DH would allow me.
  • I'm currently a stay at home wife, so excited to be a stay at home mommy! Hubby wants me to stay home until he/she goes to school, hooray!
  • I'm still trying to make a decision... It's difficult to think about leaving a job that I've worked very hard to get into but at the same time it does not bring me as much joy as I thought it would. I also commute an hour to work and an hour home and my hours are inconsistent as its a salary job. I'm hoping to make some decisions soon and talk with human resources. With the cost of my commute and the cost of childcare it kind of does not make sense IMO to stay.
  • I know at my job if you don't come back from maternity leave you have to pay back all healthcare benefits (company pays 100% of our healthcare). Just make sure you know all the clauses and fine print to your contract before quitting without notice. I'm also trying to figure out what I'm going to do..
  • I actually already quit my big job at a veterinary diagnostic lab because of the overnight hours and handling of hazardous animal tissues (tons of toxoplasma samples for example) and it just wasn't an environment I was comfortable being pregnant in. I'm just going to be waitressing a few nights a week now until closer to my due date, and then be a stay at home mom until I go back to school next fall for my doctorate. So excited to be a stay at home mom, even if it's just temporary!

If I could leave my job now I would but it makes sense financially to earn a bit extra income until baby arrives. I'm thinking it will be nice to be done in October.
I cannot wait to be a stay at home mom. My SO has a great job that he absolutely loves so he will be staying while I get to be home with baby. I will be going back to school at some point after baby is born to receive a degree in business, as I studied medical biology and there isn't much I want to do either that degree.

I will be taking my vacation time and then using FMLA before I do tell my company I am coming back. My insurance is not through work so that aspect of things won't effect me.
  • I quit my job when my son was 17 months. Now, I get to be a stay at home mom to two! Some days are absolutely crazy but hubby tells me not to rush back in to work. They're only little once and if you are blessed to stay home - enjoy!

Yes, I plan on quitting at the end of my 7th month :)
  • @taylovesbrad, if you're given ST disability or leave that is paid, absolutely wait until after that time.

After talking with my HR team, I found out that we get 6 weeks of short term disability (or 8 weeks) fully paid with benefits. After that, you can use your vacation days during your first few weeks of FMLA to also have that FMLA be paid. She also told me that while on leave the day you let them know you're not coming back is considered your last day (no 2 weeks notice or "when my leave is up" - they just call you done). So, the best way to do it at my company is to take your leave and let them know on the very last day of your leave that you're not coming back so that you can be paid during that time and get benefits fully covered.

Not all companies are like that, but it's worth looking into so you can get the most out of your time there.
  • If you are planning on leaving make sure you cash out all your vacation before you start your leave. I made that mistake and ended up owing money back.
  • I am planning on leaving. My direct boss already knows that I am leaving, but I won't officially quit till after I am on maternity leave. We usually get a Christmas bonus, so I want to stay on so I can get that. Plus I will have some vacation, and I'm not sure what happens with that. But that's my plan. I get paid crap, (which is out of my boss's ability to change) so she was the one who told me to stay on so I could at least get the bonus. She is so awesome :)
  • I did after last baby. Best decision of my life!
