Formula feeding. How much&how often?

My son will be 1 month on friday& I feel like he eats way too much. He eats 5-6 oz about every 4 hours. I only feed him when he's hungry, but he's ALWAYS hungry lol. As a first time mom, I was just wondering what everyone else's feeding schedules are like. I know every baby is different, just concerned I could be over feeding him.

  • If he isn't spitting up a lot, I wouldn't think you are over feeding him.

  • My son is a month old and takes 3 and a half ounces every 3 hours. He would probably take more if I let him. He does spit up quite a bit if I don't burp him in the middle of his bottle. But otherwise he does great with it. It holds him over until the next feeding.
  • My 6 week old drinks 3 oz every 2-3 hours. Our pediatrician said not to increase it until at least 2 months.
  • My 5 week old eats 2 to 3 oz every two hours almost on the dot
  • My 3.5 week old eats 4 oz every 3 hours. I wouldn't worry too much about over feeding- when babies are breastfed they eat until satisfied. Also my ped said 4 oz is fine
  • My 3 week old eats 3.5oz every 3-4 hours. Our pediatrician said increase it as needed, if she is gulping it down and hungry 2 hours later then go up a half ounce. We are hoping by going to 3.5oz we can extend her feeding and sleeping times.
  • My son is 5 weeks and in the NICU. He was full term and 8lbs at birth. Now 9lbs 12oz. A full feeding for him is 2.5oz. between 2.5oz and 3oz is recommend until 2 months old.

    My DD is 3weeks & 3 days . She's breastfeed & we supplement her with formula especially at night I also pump my milk to see how much she's drinking 6 oz now .She hardly ever spits up & never trows up ,so I'm not worry I guess she's just a big eater.
  • 15 minutes after my son was born he drank a 2 oz bottle of formula. And he was drinking they every 3 hours on the dot. Once home he would drink the 2 oz and be up in 2 hours. So we upped him to 2 and a half. A couple days later that did not seem to be enough for him. At our week check up I asked the doc if it was okay to feed him more or was I over feeding him. He doesn't spit it. Maybe only twice since birth. He is very active when he is awake. Doesn't stop moving. He was 8lbs and 9 oz at birth and 53cm long. At his check up he was 9lbs and 54 cm long. He said he's growing, and to let him eat til he doesn't want anymore. I was worried about over feeding and he said with how active he is he is burning off what he's eating and still gaining so not to worry too much. As of right now he will be 2 weeks old Monday and is drinking roughly 4 oz.
  • Thanks ladies! This helps a lot!
  • Mine ate 2 oz from day three and during week two he was getting 3 oz every 1.5 to 2 hours he is very active that i cant swaddle him he will free himself in a minute ,he is 2 weeks 5 days now and he is getting 4 oz every two hrs,my breastmilk is never enough so i always have to top up with formula 8-}
  • My boy is 1 month old also. He eats 4 oz every 3 hours during the day and 5 oz during the night so that he'll sleep 4 hours long between feedings. His doc told me to feed him until he's full and he will stop eating or turn his head from the bottle if he doesn't want anymore and that it's hard to over feed a newborn. Some babies have larger appetites than others. I've struggled with keeping him full and happy which is why he's on formula and not breast milk, I wasn't producing enough to keep up with his appetite!!
