Donate your cord blood to save a life. ..for free. ..Personal story

Just so you know, you can also tell the hospital you want to donate your cord blood to the Bone marrow bank. I have a student (10 years old) that needs a bone marrow transplant and they are doing everything to find a match. His mom told me about being able to donate the cord blood for free. I don't have the money to bank it for my family but if it can save someone else's life. I guess she said you just tell them before your delivery and they take care of it for you. I spent a long school year watching this little boy get blood transfusions every two weeks. His mother was one of the strongest women I have ever met. I am not a match for him, but I might be able you save someone else's life and my baby and I won't even be effected.

  • Check with your hospital....at mine if you want to donate you have to go pick up the kit Mon-Thurs during certain hours. We wanted to donate last time and like you, thought we just told them and they took care of it. We were unable to because I went into labor on a Friday and it was too late to get the kit. You can however easily sign up for the bone marrow donor list! I have been on it for about 14 years.

I really wanted to donate the cord blood but I was told since I'm delaying clamping it can't be done. :-S I feel really guilty about it though.
  • We can't donate at our hospital because there isn't a bank close enough. :/
  • I'm doing this!

Question? I know you can't clamp and bank, but can you bank and donate? I am debating because cancer and rare diseases run in mine and DH's families.

If you donate to a public bank, there is a chance it will still be banked and unused should your children need it. I donated my daughter's, but now that I'm considering delaying clamping I'm not sure I will with this baby.
  • This is the link. Some hospitals do it, some don't. I know it's not for everyone, but I think it's pretty amazing it's even possible. @mriee don't feel bad. It's a tough decision and delayed cord clamping helps someone too. Plus there are other ways you can help people. I had no idea about this during my first pregnancy, and I'm waiting for the bank closest to me to call me. My hospital does it but I am going to check if it's all the time or not.

Go to www.bethematch.org and search cord blood banking.
  • According to my hospital you actually can delay clamping and cord blood bank. They said they don't have a lot of folks bank because of cost but there delayed clamping is standard and they still are able to allow for banking for those who want to. I know that is counter to what everything online says, but it may be worth talking to your practitioner.
  • I just finished the paperwork. It is a great thing to do! I have a family friend whose daughter needed stem cells so this is why I have always wanted to donate.
There is a lot of paperwork involved and you only have a certain time frame where you can apply. I am in Connecticut and there are no banks near me but lifeforce cryobank in Florida will accept it as long as we do not deliver on the weekend.
If you are considering donation it is great just make sure to research it ahead of time!
  • Donated with my first and am donating again! I'm in Quebec, Canada and there is also a breast milk bank that just started which I will donate to to help the preemies!

Well if you ever feel like taking a ride, check this place out **WARNING: Addiction may occur** https://www.facebook.com/HeirloomFoodCompany and here is their regular site (although their FB page will list their specials) https://www.eatheirloomfood.com/ It is absolutely amazing...the first time someone took me I was like, "Okay, what am I going to eat here?" and then I literally used to go every day for lunch when I worked in CT - I would be a vegetarian/vegan if they would come cook for me!! People drive from all over to go there, one day when we were there Wendy (the owner) was trying to figure out where she would fit 10 people at a table because Renee Zellweger and some of her friends were on their way. SOOOOOooooooOOoo good!!
