Diet changes

I have definitely noticed my stomach has been seriously bloated! Before I knew I was pregnant I had been following a paleo diet but have kind of thrown that out the window since finding out I was preggers. At first I wanted to stick with paleo but all I was craving was cheeseburgers, Mac and cheese and pizza. I tried to ignore it at first but then I was concerned I wasn't getting everything the baby needed so I have incorporated dairy and bread into my diet. I feel better on the craving front but I definitely feel the bloat from adding back foods that have been strangers for a long time. I haven't really gained weight, I go back and forth within 5 or 6 lbs but I definitely feel bigger in the belly. Has anyone else been used to the paleo diet or a strict diet and thrown it out the window? How is it going for you?

Re: Diet changes

  • I followed a strict paleo diet before finding out I was pregnant too! All that has gone out the window with the first trimester and I've packed on almost 7 lbs already at 12 weeks. I was considered slightly underweight before so I guess it was needed but I've certainly been feeling bloat like I've never experienced before! I get so uncomfortable I fantasize about sticking a pin in my stomach and popping it lol! But I have a history of eating disorders and while paleo was a good middle ground for me while not pregnant, I'm hesitant to restrict my diet at all during pregnancy knowing my history. Hopefully with the second tri I can get my diet back on track enough to at least be less bloated! I swear I look 6 months pregnant by the end of the day. Wish it wasn't bikini season though! Good luck!

  • I was strict paleo non dairy as well before all of this. Still going through morning sickness and I have aversions to cooking meat and eating most cuts. Most fresh healthy foods. I can't wait to feel normal and eat normally. I can tell I've gained a ton already. Not happy about that.

  • It's so comforting hearing this, thanks ladies! I'm ok with the fact that I'm not eating paleo but I just struggle with the fact that I am a strong believer in the paleo way but I can't seem to be ok without incorporating a little bit of everything into my diet these days. I am 11w 1d and I too feel like I am huge by the end of the day! I do think I will go right back to paleo once the baby comes which will help, along with breastfeeding, to get back, at least close to, my pre-pregnancy body. Not that that is a big concern at the moment, I just want to make sure the choices I'm making now are best for the baby.
  • I'm right there with you. I wasn't strictly paleo but I was definitely very low carb and no dairy. I threw that out the window when I found out I was pregnant as well. I never had morning sickness but "healthy" food never sounded appetizing. I've also gained about what you have and look/feel bloated all the time. I'm FINALLY starting to feel a bit better energy-wise and healthy food is starting to sound a bit better. So, I'm hoping to start going back forward the lower carb, less dairy diet. I know I won't go back completely but I think it'll help me to at least feel a little healthier!

    Good luck to you!
  • I'm right along the same lines. Was doing a non strict paleo diet (allowed dairy) but stopped when I became preggo.
It saddens me that my once favorite foods now cause me to gag at the sight/smell of them.
I've also been bloated beyond belief and have gained too much weight. I keep waiting for that magic moment where I can eat normally again.
  • I am 15 weeks today and previously followed a mostly paleo diet. I noticed that my normal diet was not working for me once pregnant. Adding some ezekial bread in the mornings and some grass fed cottage cheese or Greek yogurt (when we can afford grass-fed!) once a day helped tremendously. I found I was feeling nauseous between meals and not feeling satisfied from the same foods that worked for me before. I've also added some beans (mostly in the form of hummus) and more fruit than before and I've found that helps with the sugar cravings I started having. I did feel bloated often but not much in the last week or so. I am a FTM and nutrition was one of my biggest worries after I found out I was pregnant. I also believe strongly in most of the paleo diet principles but I feel ok adding the foods I did since I never had any strong symptoms of gluten or dairy intolerance. I want to make sure I'm eating the best I can for my baby but it is hard when my normal foods just don't sound good! Good luck and I'd be interested to hear what is working for all of you other ladies!
  • I was a strict "clean eater" for almost 2 years.  Unfortunately I was not craving the real healthy stuff in the early weeks so I did slack off quite a bit and I'm SOOOOOO disappointed in myself.  I'm starting to finally feel like myself again and getting more energy so just this week I started back on my "clean eating" as well as getting back into a workout routine.  Feels good!

  • So glad to hear others are struggling with their diets as well. Lol that sounds mean. But I normally eat a very health lean diet and that has All gone out the window. I can barely cook, or pack my lunch for work so I'm constantly eating out which I Hardly ever did!! I normally have a very small meal and now I'm finding myself starving every 2 hours and eating foods that I would never eat. I'm having such a hard time dealing with this because I just want to eat normally again!! I'm almost 11 weeks and have gained 6 pounds! Freaking out!! I don't remember being this hungry with my first :(
  • I don't usually watch what I eat intentionally but love vegetables enough that they constituted a good amount of my diet. Pretty sure the only vegetables I ate today were on my deep dish pizza.
I also was an avid runner but was sidetracked with a stress fracture a month before finding out I was pregnant. So while I'm "only" 6 lbs up from being pregnant-I gained 4 or 5 from not running. Saddest day.
  • I've always enjoyed healthy foods and now that I'm pregnant, I'm definitely focused on getting lots of nutrients in my body. I have made a point to add in more carbs (whole grain, complex carbs) during the day for energy. I was eating every 3-4 hours, but now I'd say it's more like every 2-3 hours! The appetite has really cranked up this past week. I've always been a food journal person, so that helps me stay on track and allows me to indulge my newfound sweet tooth occasionally!

I am/will always be vegetarian, but i was strictly plant-based/vegan for years. We eat almost all fruits/veg/nuts/seeds/legumes/beans and almost never any breads or bready carbs.  During the first few weeks I let myself each cheese and pizza and things like that without feeling badly, but i was so bloated! I'm now trying to go back to my more healthy eating and I feel a lot better. I wouldn't beat yourself up over what you're eating while you're pregnant as long as you're getting the nutrients you really need.
  • I was also following a strict diet pre baby, and was down 90lbs. I had to add calories and carbs back in and drop some of the exercise because I am freaking exhausted. I also have diabetes and apparently when I'm pregnant my body can't handle fruit.... So my food now is completely different....
I miss fruit :( I am up 10 lbs already which is freaking killing me because I know how hard each pound is to lose...
  • @mnwilkey We are basically the same person, except I'm a few weeks behind you.  Hoping I start to feel better soon too.
  • Ha @tralalablah that's awesome! Hope you start to feel better soon too.
  • I just spoke to my naturopathic doctor about this yesterday. I've been gluten free and strict for 5 years, but I've been craving bread like mad! I'm going to test it this weekend, to see if my body will tolerate it again.

  • I've been on a vegan diet, mostly wheat-free (gf) and very low sugar (no processed sugar). But ever since I've been pregnant I have been eating so much more sugar (in the form of agave, maple syrup and dates mainly) and I started eating butter croissants. Basically I eat what I can keep down, which is mostly vegan stuff anyways despite the butter in the croissants. I mostly feel bad about eating that much sugar... I often feel like I will fail that upcoming glucose test!

Your body may learn to tolerate it again, but there might be those few initial days where you feel like you are digesting rocks and wake up with hangover symptoms (headache, congestion, puffy face). That's what happened to me

  • I was following Paleo a bit loosely before, but by week 5, the only food I could keep down was carbs. I lived off cereal and bagels and cream cheese for almost a month, which led to some serious bloating. I'm now 15 weeks, the bloating is basically gone, and I've gained 3 lbs. I'm starting to eat healthier, but the Taco Bell cravings are brutal (which is super weird because I never ate Taco Bell before). I read that getting some carbs is important for the baby, so I'm not too worried about it. I eat as healthy as I can, but I let myself indulge a little.
  • I have not had any interest in all of the veggies I used to not be able to get enough of. It is comforting hearing all of your stories, knowing that I am not the only one who has said goodbye to my healthy eating. Now, I am still making good choices as far as the quality of what I am eating, but I have really opened up my options! I don't really feel as bad as I did in the beginning because I am happy☺️ I haven't really put any weight on so I don't think in going overboard. Good luck everyone!!
