Babies on the Brain

Did you know you were pregnant before the test?

Before you freak out at the title, I'm definitely not asking if you think I'm pregnant. Haha!  Some friends and I were talking to my mom today (they don't know we are TTC - we were talking about this because a friend is recently pregnant) and a few of them felt very strongly that they had either early symptoms or subconsciously knew they were pregnant before they did a home test. My mom said that she was severely nauseated but was convinced it was just because they had just moved to an oil town. In fact, she and my dad were meeting with a fertility specialist about in vitro when they found out she was pregnant with me with her pre-appointment bloodwork. The doctor joked that my mom was her biggest success - all she did was sit down in the office and she was pregnant! Haha!

So for those of you who are pregnant or have had children, did you have any symptoms or idea that you would get that BFP? Or was it a surprise?

(Again - each body is different and this thread is not meant to help anyone figure out they are pregnant. It's just a fun discussion. If you seriously think asking a board will be able to help you decide if you are pregnant, I think there are some mental health specialists who might be more up your alley.)

Re: Did you know you were pregnant before the test?

  • I didn't think I was pregnant but I did realize something was off. I was working out and getting winded during my warm ups, started getting bad headaches, was SO tired, just little things. I've had more classic pregnancy symptoms (nausea, cravings, cramping, sore boobs) pmsing than I ever did actually pregnant.

This situation is classic confirmation bias.  People want to believe they "know", so they fixate on the one cycle they thought they were pregnant when they actually were, and ignore the other times they thought they were pregnant when they weren't.
That's what I think too. In my mom's case, she was convinced she was pregnant every cycle that she got a BFN and the one time she was actually pregnant, she rationalized away the symptoms.
  • Funny thing about ours -I took the test about five days before my missed period because we'd had protection issues a few times in the last month. Honestly, I took it expecting it to be negative, but wasn't totally surprised when it wasn't, if that makes sense? I still almost passed out, though. So, yes and no? Ha!

I actually didn't know. I was complaining to my mom one day that my boobs hurt really bad and that I could barely wear my purse across my body without the strap pushing against me and having pain. She told me to get a test on my way home and I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when it came back positive. I thought it was just pre-period symptoms..guess not lol

    **ticker warning**

I had no indication that I was pregnant. The only "symptoms" i had were ones that I got every month when AF was supposed to arrive, mainly being tender breasts. I didn't even test until 3 days past my missed period because I seriously thought I wasn't pregnant. Well, I was happily surprised when the test said otherwise.

  • Baby #1 all I knew was that I felt hung over for 3 days and that wasn't normal. Baby #2 I charted so knew when I ovulated and how early I could test, so it was too early for me to "know" before taking the test.
  • With my first pregnancy, I remember feeling nothing abnormal at all. I mean NOTHING!! lol, I remember I started feeling symptoms exactly the same day I found out and the day after. I also tested before my missed period and the stick showed a solid two lines, no blurry additional one that makes you wonder- a solid two haha. I remember actually waking up at 6 am to check because that was my first morning pee, and I knew that would have the most hcg levels possible- so I did. That same day we had to go to a bat mitztvah party which required lots of dancing ( almost like a wedding) and I remember feeling achy in my hips and groin and back. It was a dull achy feeling and whenever I'd try to dance I felt the ache, like I was getting arthritis in my hip joints. Then I had to pee very often, so that I knew was different and confirmed I was definitely something! Another thing I remember thinking I actually felt like a tiny stone in my stomach (but that could of been my head messing with me... I actually thought I could feel a seed lol)

Now we are trying again for another one, and I swear this week I felt that pain again in my joints and my lower back, but much more than last time... not sure if that's a sign of me pregnant or just getting old! :) I'm supposed to test next week! so lets hope its the first one! ;)
  • With our first, yes. We'd been trying for a while, and one day when I was in the shower, it just hit me. I think it was maybe 5dpo. Felt peaceful and confident- I also knew he was a boy. It was a bizarre but very cool experience. The other two pregnancies, I didn't have "that feeling" again.
  • I have painful ovulation so with that and charting, I knew when I ovulated. Plus an RE was monitoring my cycles, so that was a 3rd confirmation of ovulation. That being said, instinctually I knew I was pregnant soon after intercourse but I didn't POAS. I waited and did labs with my RE on 14dpo.

Symptom wise, I was out shopping on 12 and 13dpo and felt fatigued very easily. I remember my legs felt weak and shaky but all I was doing was walking the mall. I was also extremely thirsty those 2 days. Like drank 20oz bottles of water like it was nothing. Also, the chemistry of my hair texture changed instantly. Oily by the root, dry frizzy ends. I can look back at emails to a friend. I described a lot to her but that is what I can recall before the labs on 14dpo.
  • I didn't think I was pregnant but I did realize something was off. I was working out and getting winded during my warm ups

This. The only thing I noticed was when I would run I wasn't doing as well as I had. I got a stitch in my side right away and it was super discouraging to have to stop. I figured I just hadn't had enough water that day and wasn't breathing right. DH said he knew because I kept having extreme night sweats and the A/C was actually colder than normal. Other than that I really didn't have any symptoms until after I took the test and now I have nausea, heartburn, fatigue, and cramping
  • With my first pregnancy, yes. My boobs were huge, I was constipated, and I was exhausted. I still waited until my missed period to test, but I wasn't surprised. With my second pregnancy I was positive that I wasn't pregnant because I didn't feel any changes at all. I was quite shocked when I got a BFP.
  • I didn't with my first. But with my second I kind of knew what to look for. I knew I was pregnant because I had darker circles around my nipple and I was really crampy like Af was
  • I am quite positive I knew pretty soon after I conceived my little guy. I had horrible indigestion out of no where and quickly became exhausted about a week before I tested.
  • With my first I knew. I had a gut feeling that I was. With my second, a coworker asked me if I was pregnant. It hadn't dawned on me until that moment that I might be.
  • I knew I did a test 7 days before period was due but no line, then 5 days before it said pregnant and I'm now 14wks :) I deff had a feeling!!
  • I was pretty sure yes (Although I kept telling myself I wasn't so I wouldn't be let down yet again).  We had been trying for over a year and so I was very familiar with my monthly symptoms.  I started having crazy dreams and cramping but no period, which is abnormal for me (normally the period follows the cramping pretty quickly).  My stomach also just felt tight.  In my experience it was the difference in symptoms rather than the textbook pregnancy symptoms that were a red flag.

  • As weird as it may sound I knew I was the minute it happened....we had been together for 4.5 years and always just did the (sorry for how gross it sounds) pull out method and it had always just seemed to work!! We went out with friends one night and honestly weren't drunk...feeling good ya know! well we didn't think about it and then I took a Digital ClearBlue early detection test a week before my period should even start and it said pregnant!! We were both in shock but she is now 2.5 years old and the fever has set back in for both of us ;)

I even felt like I knew it was a girl before I was far enough along to tell!!  Mothers intuition!!

Yes, I knew I was pregnant before I tested. It's hard to describe, but I felt different. I had a mc in Feb, a single period in March, then one night I had difficulty sleeping so that morning I took a pregnancy test. I had two very light streaks of blood(which was implantation) a week before and my period hadn't came so I was kind of expecting it yet I was overwhelmed with emotions when I seen the positive(In April). I decided to retest the next evening and it was positive as well. Turns out I was almost 6wks then. Now I'm in my 17th week and cannot wait to meet my LO!! :\">
  • I definitely knew before I took my test. I actually was unable to fall asleep three nights in a row, OBSESSED over the fact that I was pregnant and all the life changes that would undoubtedly come with that. I didn't take a test for another 1.5 weeks or so, and got my BFP.
  • I've had 4 pregnancies. I had no early symptoms with the first, but knew I was pregnant before I could test with the others. I was suddenly constipated with the last 3 and came down with mild colds. With the 3rd, I was very sleepy all day and with the 4th my boobs were sore too.
  • I felt like I knew at conception. My husband kept telling me I was acting cranky and I had some slight cramping and sure enough, those were signs of conception. A few weeks later, I took 4 tests and they were positive: )
  • I had no symptoms that I thought would be directly related to pregnancy except extreme fatigue with all 3 of mine.  I was falling asleep on the couch every night and the tiredness was much more intense than normal.

  • When I took the test (it was before my missed period) I had no symptoms at all so I assumed I would get a BFN. I took the test and jumped in the shower; I expected to see a BFN when I got out of the shower but was pretty surprised to see a BFP.

  • I did. I had a feeling for about a week and kept asking the bf what would be our plan if i was and we had a chat. He kept telling me i couldnt be and not to worry about it. After a week it was still in my mind and i was 99.9% sure i was, so i got a test and was not surprised at all when it said i was. I basically came out saying "i told you so" lol
  • **ticker warning**

I actually felt less symptomatic than the cycles I wasn't pregnant and I was in denial after peeing on 3 sticks.

Lurking here from TTC, I don't normally post over here. For me, my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage. When I got pregnant, I felt... Different? I just knew. My DH was just my boyfriend at the time, but he told me I was crazy - I was on BCPs and couldn't be pregnant. About a month later, I was having nausea all the time, eating meat was making me throw up. Then one day at my friend's house, her husband opened a cream soda 3 rooms away and I knew instantly. I decided to test. Not having my period had been normal to me on the pill, so my missed period was an afterthought. I had 3 different test types and all were BFP.

Two days ago was my confirmed O, and I woke up this morning with that same feeling. It could be reminiscent of my first pregnancy experience, but I just feel different. Guess I will find out in about 8-12 days. I just have a strange suspicion.

I totally agree with this as i know i myself am guilty of it, now that im TTC the past two months my periods have been suspiciously late and i have had weird symptoms (nausea, extra tired, etc.) and alas still not pregnant! But i know its definitely just because were TTC and its so much on my brain that im looking for things out of the ordinary.

Like @FireinWonderland my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage and we weren't married yet but I totally knew as well. My boobs were so sore and I was so tired. I came home from work one day and I just knew because of that plus... weird symptoms- I had a constant running nose and tons of nose bleeds. I never get nose bleeds. Now every time I get a nose bleed I think I'm pregnant.
  • My first pregnancy ended in miscarriage.  With it I did not truly know before hand.  I tend to have irregular cycles sometimes so to me, being late for a period is not really something to get excited over.  Abnormal is my normal.   I work from home and occasionally we have to go to the office if one of the suits is coming it.  That day I drank a lot of coffee in the office and then I noticed it made me super nauseated which was really really really weird.  My boobs were tender, etc.   I was hoping that I was pregnant, but hesitant to get excited.  I took a HPT and it said negative.  Then a week later I took another and it said BFP.  Unfortunately that one ended in MC at 9w6d.
Now since the MC, my body likes to play tricks on me. Back in June, I was two weeks late, and had classic pregnancy symptoms like crazy.  I was convinced I was pregnant even though the HPTs sad negative.  I had every symptom in the book.  I went for a blood test and the same day the tests results came back I got AF.  Talk about a slap in the face.  So the MC changed my PMS symptoms so they mirror pregnancy symptoms.  It is brutal.
This really sucks when you want a HPT so bad.  This month I can't decide if I'm having PMS or pregnancy symptoms.  I will say that today my husband was in the kitchen making a sandwich.  I had no idea what kind of sandwich.  I walked out of the bedroom and the smell of tomato hit me in the face.   There is a lonnnnnng hallway between the  bedroom and the kitchen.   Hubby could not even smell it at all and he was standing right there!   I've never ever had that kind of smell sensitivity before.  I mean I've had the sensitive nose, but never to that degree. So I'm hoping this is a pregnancy symptom and not a pre AF symptom.

  • I had taken a test 2 days after my missed period and got a negative result.. 2 days later, on my way home from the gym something was telling me to stop and buy another test. Took two that day and were both positive!

I didn't have any symptoms other than just a super strong feeling to take another test. I just knew I was. Plus, this sounds weird, but I swear my dogs knew before me.. Normally my littlest one is not a cuddler at all and slept by my feet.. but since before I found out he had started sleeping across my stomach. And still does!
  • @NLewis1 I've never heard anyone else mention it but my doctor said it was a thing and I googled it constantly. Such a weird bodily response to pregnancy. I remember always having tissues on me. I wonder if it'll happen again!

Please PM me if you get a BFP (I saw you're TTC for #2 in your siggy! exciting!!) and it starts again!!! I'm so curious!!

Ugh I had this too - it was terrible! I was extremely stuffed up at night, too. I would wake up in the middle of the night and could hardly breathe. I finally bought those strips you put on your nose and they helped a little. :/

  • Nope! I had no idea. I was so busy with life. My father in law called it out first when I thought I had a bad stomach virus. I was extremely tired, but I figured it was from having so many things to do. Turns out it was all for my precious love.

Had no idea. I'm very irregular and on Metformin. We had been TTC but for various reasons did not think it would happen the month it did. I was fully expecting to have to undergo further treatments to get pregnant. I was shocked to say the least. I took a test on a whim as I thought I would have had my period by that stage. Little faint line popped up. I still replay it in my head. Magical.
