Suppository...how bad is it?

Good evening everyone!

I am a FTM and I just had my son on Saturday. I had a c section and was admitted friday due to high blood pressure. I have not had a bm since before getting admitted. They are a little worried and want to give me a suppository. I'm a little nervous. I've never had one and I've never had an issue going. I feel the need to go and I'm passing gas but I can't get anything to come out. Has anyone has experienced this before and was it really bad? I'm supposed to be discharged tomorrow if I do get one, should I do it now?

Thank you in advance!
Angie

  • Ask for milk of magnesia or miralax.

  • Those things are pretty intense. I had to use one and ended up shitting on a towel. Good thing the towel was handy. I'd take what Klkonwi suggested, definitely more gentle. You don't want something that's going to force your muscles to tighten up and strain. That would be pretty painful after having a cesarean.
  • I did but the doctors don't give that for going. Idk why but they will only give a suppository. I feel like lying and say I did and just go home and take it on my own.
  • They probably are giving you that because it works fast. I just think it would be painful. There's a stimulant in a suppository. Stimulants pretty much force the poo out of you by squeezing your intestines. That's my experience from them. Not sure if I'm completely accurate.
  • Did you keep having an issue making it to the toilet after that first time or is it like one big explosion and then you're normal/regular after that?
  • @rsalata2015 just said that she had to grab a towel to shit on.......... Doesn't get much more clear than that.......
  • I used to have them when I was younger - serious bowel issues... It isn't pleasant but it's fast working. Better than them giving you an enema (spelling?). That would be unpleasant. Maybe make sure you're good in pain meds after they give it just in case.
  • In my experience it was pretty explosive. I was supposed to leave it in for some odd minutes but I couldn't hold it in. I guess I wasn't as constipated as I thought I was.
  • Sorry about the popping on a towel visual! Yuk
  • ^^^^^ I liked it. Gets the point across :)
  • I was allowed to leave the hospital without having a BM, but the next day was in so much pain from not moving my own bowels that I used a suppository at home anyways. You could also try milk of magnesia or prune juice.

I would take a suppository over the feeling of constipation. I absolutely hated the feeling of wanting to poop but not being able to. I personally have never had an explosive poop from one. Maybe it depends on which kind you take?
  • Magnesium pills work the same as milk of magnesia. That is one item in my hospital bag that I didn't have with DS. Take with a big glass of water, works overnight.
  • Last summer I had a breast lift/implants after losing 80 pounds and they gave me Valium and Percocet for the pain. Anyways, the Percocet constipated me so my mom talked me into a suppository (being the wonderful nurse she is :-L ). Haha anyways, it wasn't bad to me, I felt much better after finally having a bowel movement. Now, that being said, I'm sure it will be a little more painful after a cesarean, but once you finally do have a bowel movement it will relieve a lot of that extra pressure you are probably feeling right now. Hope you have some luck ;)
  • Mirolax is a godsend! No cramping but some stank gas.
  • No one really answered OP's f/u question, and now I'm curious: is it just the first poop that's explosive (potentially) and then it's back to normal? Or does that urgency/looseness go for multiple times?

No one answered it directly because we can't tell you exactly what the first poop will be like! ........ Common sense. It's your poop and your body. Not mine.
  • My first poop wasn't explosive. I was stating how suppositories containing stimulants reacted with my body. I do not wish explosive craps on no one. I don't understand why they would give someone who just had a cesarean a stimulant. I can't even imagine. I wish everyone gentle poops.

That's not common sense. I've never had a suppository for any reason. You can't say whether people generally have urgent runs for the rest of the day or if they have one serious poop situation and that's it? Or that it could go either way, you've seen both? If you're sick of answering medical-type questions that you find so obvious, then don't, but it's certainly not obvious or common sense to everyone.
  • Suppositories don't do much for me. Just regular poops.

A cup of coffee does more for me!

I don't think you'll have explosive uncontrollable diarrhea unless you take too many.
  • I'm not sick of answering anything. I'm saying everyone's poop experience WILL be different: do you think you and your best friend have the same poop?!? It is complete common sense. And also you love to argue .... And I don't enjoy arguing.
  • Plus. I've said the word "generally" on this board and it starts a backlash of oh really?? Generally?!? And your one person who has argued with me on the term generally. @Frogger5

Everyone's every experience will be different. THAT is obvious. I do love to argue - that's not something I'll argue about. And I dispute that you don't like it, too. We have time, what's the harm?
  • I've never gotten diarrhea from a suppository. It just very harshly squeezed the crap out of me. I wouldn't do it again unless I was in pain.

Ok, ok, forget it. Just saying I wanted to know what the suppository would do for the rest of the day! Of course if the staff says you have to poop before you leave, and the only option is the suppository, I'll take it. I just wondered.
  • After the poop the rest of my day was great. It didn't effect me later on. It's a instant gratification poo. :ar!

This just made me LOL. :))

  • I try. I'm glad I could make someone laugh.
  • Hahaha everyone loves a good poop debate 8->
  • I wish everyone gentle poops.

Favorite post of the day lol thank you @rsalata2015 for always being honest and hilarious!
  • I was given a suppository the day after my c-section because I had horrible, painful bloating and gas and hadn't used the bathroom yet. They gave it to me about 3am, and it didn't kick in until the next day. I had loose bowel movements pretty much all day the next day. The first was pretty wild. I felt SO much better afterwards though.
  • Aww I feel so special :-) thank you this definitely made me smile.
